guys....vent as much as you want....all I see is 19 pages of messages.....the first by a Linden that tells us that there will be 'hopefully' a fix for this on tuesday...well we'll see how much improvement that brings.... and otherwise ..they don't have to refund a thing ...so vent...but with 19 pages of messages and nothing else from the Lindens..make your own rhyme...

Right on the nail head Kyron. If this was a sudden an unexpected thing, I could cut Linden Labs some slack and say, "Hey, stuff happens" and do my best to help them out. But this has been going on for weeks... months.. (and from what I hear years) now... and with the kind of backing they have at this point and the amounts they're charging end users, they really have no wiggle room for such continuing problems.

I mean, this service is a 24/7 system, yes? They don't shut it down in the evenings and on weekends? Then why isn't the system help manned 24/7 for when something like this happens? Why can they not perform the Tuesday release TODAY (really, it can't operate any worse than it is now, can it?). I'm not trying to kick Linden Labs in the shins, but your points are valid and directly stated.

Totally.

Let's take a look at a big company. in this case eBay. can you imagine the Economical damage done by hours not to say days of downtime?... what's difference? people sell stuff on ebay and people sell stuff on SL. Back then when we had the big problem with 1.4 I lost a lof income because people that couldn't enter and purchase stuff.

Just for the record. I know people that are paying their car loan with SL money.

Now let go tech, I'm a Computer systems Engineer. I know that with a system as complex as this things can go wrong, and having over 1300 people plugged when it does, doesn't help at all. I know that when you have a database failure it may take hours to repair.

But we have the following facts:

1) Something got screwed up in their servers, not in our computers... so how are supposed to wait until thursday for the next update to fix locally what they screw up remotely?.

2) No failure whatsoever justifies the fact that we are getting a CHEAP CLASS SUPPORT from them. Where is the QA? where are those higly paid and highly prepared and expert people that you hire for your Quality Assurance team? We should have at least 5 people talking here with us in this forum explaining every single thing that happened. because after all... its because of us that they are in business...

So in a summary. I do not attack the fact that they screwed up something in their datacenter. I am however terribly concerned that they are just forgetting about customer service and like I said before they are " treating us like teenagers ".

Let's don't forget about this after it gets back to normal ok? because this will happen again.

Tyler, before making further posts like you've made insulting people for spending time on Second Life-- maybe you need to take a few things into account:

There are many people who play Second Life and other online community games who indeed have no other life, as you so rudely point out. This is because they are disabled, handicapped, and cannot get out of the house. They cannot drive, have no transportation and no one pays attention to them in the real world, and for them Second Life and other such games are very important. And having it down for a week at a time means they have no outside contact with the world at all. You want to be shut inside your house for the next week with no people contact?

I'm thankfully not in that unfortunate situation. But I know folks who are and I sympathise with their plight. I think you could use a little of the same sympathy.

There are people here who DO have "real" lives... and they use income from Second Life to help support those real lives. Do you care to have $100, $200, $500 taken out of your paycheck this month and your boss say, "Oh durn, Tyler... sorry... you'll receive full pay again next week."

You tell people to get real lives.. and you're about to enjoy the wonderful socially redeeming contribution of POKER NIGHT? I mean, pick your poison guy, but no matter what your form of recreation, I don't think you have any business telling others to get a life.

So chill. Show some respect.

Im new to this SL stuff...a week if that, but I'm glad in a masochistic way to see that it's not just me having these problems. Now my sadistic side agrees with Kryon and the guy who spoke of lawyers.

At least the Second Life Crash Logger is working and you can always email support...anyone else being told to send their 'logs' in?

Im curious as to the mystical powers of these 'logs'...if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck it ain't a mongoose.

What ever the problem is I would rather they call someone in and fix it. If that means that the entire grid is down for the next 6 hours then that is what they need to be doing. Call in the team, reset the system. If that means overtime then pay it. The alternative an increase in the amount of ppl who cannot log on.

I was fine day before yesterday. Last night I started having issues logging in. Today I can't log in at all. That sounds to me like a virus that is spreading.

What ever the issue is, its more than apparent that it is gettting worse. Just fix it.

Martin, you're totally right here. Because this problem didn't just start happening last night or this week, as some folks mistakenly believe. This has been going on for MONTHS, and it really, really started showing up about 30 days ago.

Several months ago I predicted that Second Life was about to experience a major crash. Told several friends that. Told Linden Labs that. They ignored me. 2 weeks later, they were major down-- for almost an entire week. The responses at that time were much like they are now. A MONTH ago, I began pointing out to Linden Labs that Second Life was experiencing system-crippling lag. Their response was to tell me that our sim contained "too many active scripts" (when that exact same sim had been running perfectly fine up until the point the lag hit).

There's another post on here during the last few days in which I finally got fed up enough to take Lindens to task regarding their claims regarding excessive lag (ie, putting the blame on the users rather than fixing it). I received more of the same responses they gave before: It's all CONTENT. "The users are the ones in the drivers seat" and other similar stuff.

My response to them is exactly the same thing you've stated: Stop making excuses. Get someone in who knows what he's doing and FIX IT. We've heard these excuses for the last 5 months. We're tired of excuses. We're tired of not being able to log on. We're tired of being teleported to LIMBO and being forced to log off. We're tired of inventory items being lost in transfer. We're tired of lag so bad that it destroys events, of seeing our chat messages take 30 seconds to appear to other users, of appearing NAKED when we teleport to a sim (well, maybe not so tired of that.... LOL. That's always good for a laugh).

Saying FIX IT is a hard line I know... but millions of businesses operate by that line every single day.

Start paying $200 a month then tell me to chill out. The system doesn't get progressively better; it's been doing nothing other than getting progressively worse, bloated with useless features like Streaming Video while fundamental aspects like logging in and teleporting remain broken. Hell, they can't even handle the bandwidth and load requirements they had before that video feature even came out.

Linden seriously needs to hire someone who clearly understands priorities from the customer point of view, stop all feature development and FIX THE FUNDAMENTAL PROBLEMS. I fail to see why that's so hard for them to figure out.

Adding essentially useless features like streaming video and prettying up the web page in an attempt to win over new subscribers is kinda pointless if they can't log in. On the other hand, most of the complaints I'm seeing are coming from newer subscribers. All I can say is to have faith. Linden Lab always makes good and does the right thing come Monday morning.

Completely Fed Up
05-14-2005 21:36
My frustration continues to grow as with each update things are supposed to get better...and personally, I see NO change at all. I am paying $10 per month in membership and $40 a month in land fees. This game is costing me $50 per month and I have been sitting here tonight for almost two hours trying to log into the game.

This is disgraceful.

I wonder what would happen if people started to ask for refunds for game time down? I am thinking that things just might be corrected WAY sooner. We are the people that keep the site alive and pump money into it, this is something that should not be a continuing issue.

To expand a bit on Chris and Robin's posts, nearly the entire development team is currently focused on fixing them. 1.6.5 should give us significant head room, but that is not the only planned change. Login and related scaling issues will remain our primary focus until we are certain that we can scale SL to many times the current user base.

I know that the current problems are incredibly frustrating, so please help us by testing out the 1.6.5 preview. In addition, expect a pretty rapid sequence of previews and releases over the next weeks and months in order to put these problems to rest once and for all.

A friend of mine finally managed to log in on SL. He says he has offered the Lindens a L$10 bribe if they'll fix the login problems. He thinks they may be willing to accept it.. but they can't log in.

Cash Out
05-14-2005 21:45
Its a good time to Cash out if you can. IGE is paying $US for $L at a higher rate than GOM. basically if you are on the 12 cent tier you'd have to sell a block (1000 lindens) at $4.17 in GOM to get what you can get on IGE that's paying 4.05 and of course they dont charge comissions. and you look at GOM, about 2 MILLION lindens are needed to be sold before anyone will pay you 4.17

Look at GOM (www.gamingopenmarket.com for the newbs) the Linden keeps dropping and nobody is buying lindens because of the recent events.

Usually the linden drops at the end of the month because everyone cashes out to lower their next month's tier, but this month has been different. Look at the date, in 10 more days the big peeps in SL will start putting out their 100K linden packets in GOM and there will be a Huge drop in Prices.

I dont' like IGE much, just like everyone else... but hey, they are paying good $$$ right now cuz they are slow to respond to this kind of events.

What do you guys think?.

If I knew what that meant in terms of real life financials and wth lindens are other than SL money...Id say 'Hot damn! Man might be onto something here!'

Why my password suddenly goes bad after installing 1.6.5
05-14-2005 21:55
Ok,
I listened to Cori Linden's advice and installed version 1.6.5. AND NOW I GET THE MESSAGE THAT MY LOGIN DETAILS ARE NOT CORRECT!!! What's going on? I am 100% sure I am entering the right information. In any case, I uninstalled version 1.6.5 and reinstalled the older 1.6.4 version and now it recognises my login information but cannot get in of course. And there is some funny message about clock not set right (hilarious). When I installed version 1.6.4, I used to get a sligthly different message ie without the clock part.
Any help/comments.
BTW there is another message that you should not pay attention to, i.e. that you have a bad driver for some intel chipset thing....used to obtain this after a fresh install of 1.6.3
