Log-In Problems

I was online tonight and the Lindens made an announcement (and I thank them for being stand-up and doing so): The data bottleneck has been found, and it's exactly what many have mentioned in the forums-- inventory.

Apparently the new streaming inventory was causing a major snafu in data transfer. Not content of sims, not scripting, not your cache, your system clock, the way you hold your tongue while you type... inventory. It was internal coding problems, Linden Labs announced it online (dunno about these forums) and there you have it. Perhaps they'll get it fixed and everything back up and running again. Unfortuantely, most likely a lot of folks won't be back to see the "improvement". And in honesty, I think that was just one of the problems. We're likely to see this scenario again, expecially with the constant and questionable changes in program design and user policies. Dunno what to do about that.

Oh wait, yes I do! Stop giving a rats hiney and get back to RL. I might even get some sleep once in a while! That works for me. :D

No, that's not entirely true. The main problem was scripts checking for incoming email. They fixed that in the patch, and that's why things are so much better now.

The inventory thing is the *next* biggest problem that needs to be solved.

Something tells me that the people who post this sort of invective have never worked in software. You have a team of bright people, all working on various parts of the system, and releases are when you get to put fixes in. Hard problems take longer. Would you rather *not* have the fixes that *have* been done, just because some harder problems haven't been fixed yet?

I myself have worked in software for some years now aswell and I can follow your statement. There is however one topic that just doesn't fit in the picture.

Many people are, like myself, complaining about the login problem. The login problem is essential. This problem should have been foreseen in beta-testing and does not file under what you call "Hard Problems". This is a "Critical Problem"! In my opinion, when you pay as much as some amongst us do, such issues have to be taken care of faster then ASAP. They shouldn't occur! True, it always can happen, of course, but it has been a couple of weeks now. The stream of updates that has taken place point out that a lot of major bugs have been in the releases and I can't imagine how the login problem can still be there. Load testing should be one of the primary concerns in beta-testing a new release, no?

To answer the question you posed: Yes. I rather would still have had the bugs if that meant I could log in.

We are paying, in my opinion quite a lot, don't we deserve at least to log in? Surely you agree with that, no? As for the people demanding a rebate, I'm with you on that one. Or some kind of thing to comfort us.

Logging In For The First Time
05-18-2005 18:55
I just signed up and am logged in but it takes stuff forever to load. I think I'm supposed to see "myself" in front of me but I haven't loaded yet. Is that normal for the first time to take a while or does it have to do with the problems everyone is having? Thanks for your time!

Hey Heathur (and welcome)
It sounds like what I went through. I had to upgrade my graphics card. Cost about $40US, but really is a huge improvement. Of course, it may be something completely different. Just my uneducated opinion.
Dont' give up-- you'll find a great bunch of crazy-good people to welcome you!! :p

This can be caused by a few different issues.

First, can you see OTHER avatars? (There may or may not actually be any other avatars on the newbie island. Look for green dots on your minimap. Can you see them in the world?) If not, turn off Avatar Vertex Program in Edit > Preferences > Adv. Graphics > Avatar Vertex Program (faster).

If you CAN see other people, however, your computer may just be taking a while to load your avatar's appearance data. Try right-clicking something and selecting "sit" in the pie menu.

If that doesn't help, select Edit > Appearance. If THAT doesn't load your avatar any faster, try changing a single Appearance setting, then closing and saving the Appearance window.

If none of this has helped, what kind of CPU, motherboard and video card do you have? How much RAM do you have? (Or if it's a brand-name computer, what make and model is it?) Do you know what video drivers you're using? What kind of internet connection do you have? In SL, hit Ctrl-Shift-1. Under "Basic", what are you getting for "FPS", "Ping Sim" and "Ping User"?

My USD$0.02

Things Linden Labs should consider:
  1. Issues first, features second.
  2. Give your customers a little more insight into the problems.
  3. Consider creditting customers for downtime to ease the discontent.

Things us secondlifers should consider:
  1. The amount of time and effort that LL must invest in a game of this magnitude.
  2. All good things come in time, patience is a virtue, yadda yadda yadda.
  3. Be honest, SecondLife is an awesome game, with an awesome community and a wealth of creativity. Would you really throw it away so quickly?

I really hope this thread will bring the Lindens and us SL addicts closer together. Constructive criticism is good, but complaining to hear yourself talk isn't.

My L$0.02

I'm still relatively new compared to most people. I consider myself a very passive person, but this is rediculous. I left World of Warcraft, not because of the glitchy updates, but because the content got old. When I first started playing SL, I was amazed at the plethora of originality. I could simply fly around for a few minutes (or seconds) and find something interesting.

Well, that was before the recent "updates". In the past few weeks, I've said goodbye to a lot of nice people who decided to abandon SL. I think SL was awesome before these recent updates, and while I enjoy the improved editing tools, I can't really think of any improvements I personally would like to see.

There is one MAJOR improvement I would like to see. STABILITY. You can have all of the greatest content in the world, but it's worthless if you don't have stability. It's nice to be able to login on a regular basis, and have things work the way you're used to. I realize that managing such a complex game would be difficult, but I honestly believe that LL could have done a better job of testing their 1.6 update. It seems to me that they jumped the gun, but maybe that's just me.

When I first joined the SL community, the first complaint I heard was about how horrible the updates are. Imagine how popular SL would be without this stigma.

From: Circe Broom
...Will we all get rebates for the time spent NOT being able to login to SL? I pay over $200 a month NOT to be able to get IN? I must be nuts! Last time I was ABLE to get ingame, I started selling my land. If this continues, IF I can get in, I will divest myself of the REST of it.
I have a friend that's in the EXACT same situation. I don't mean to seem like a Blizzard advocate, but the Lindens could really earn some brownie points with their PR if they credited it's customers for downtime. Blizzard did this, and eventhough I never experienced any downtime personally, I developed a LOT of respect for Blizzard, and would have made any future downtime much more acceptable.

ISLAND SIM FOR SALE
Plenty of enjoyable lag, edit tools don't work as expected and inventory frequently disappears. Frequent messages "wait..and due to our best efforts we're lame and suck" are included at no extra charge along with zero tech support! Is a very beautiful place (when and if you can log in to enjoy it).

All of this and more can be yours if the price is right. Only $995.00 setup fee and $200.00+ per month! Woot!

THIS ACTUALLY ISN'T TOO FAR OFF OF MY FEELINGS ABOUT ALL OF THIS B.S.

*sigh, I guess I'll keep trying until i get sick of it and go play something else. Is too bad LL's doesn't take care of issues first and features second. What kind of priority system is in place with these people anyways? All the features on the planet are useless if you can't login to use them.
Cavecub makes an excellent point. "issues first and features second".

I patched to 1.6.6 today and now crash immediately after clicking "Connect."

Repeatedly.

Bummer Zero. 1.6.6 has worked well for me except for one area: that streaming inventory. It seems most of the crash and severe lag problems I have these days are due to the new inventory system. I love the search feature... but the methodology seems all screwed up.

Could you please check the status of any firewall/antivirus/internet security/Symantec/Norton software you have? It is likely that such software has seen our autoupdater change our program and blocked Second Life access due to (erroneously) suspected viral activity. This can make all sorts of bad things happen.

If this is the case, you will need to disable this software, then completely uninstall Second Life and download and install the latest version from: http://secondlife.com/download
