Aaah, SLCC's in San Francisco. Cannot.. resist. I just booked my flight! See you guys on the left coast!

Before I post my reply, let's start with some basic concepts:

1) If you ask a question, then answer it yourself, then that's called a monologue, a severe psychotic break, or you're not really wanting an answer. In either case, Johhny Carson you aint, and the forums is not the Tonight Show.

2) If you are going to use statistics as the foundation of your argument, learn what it is. It's a well defined process with specific checks and balances, with concepts such as margin of error and sampling size, and bias. Remember that word now, you'll need to know it soon.

At first I was going to ignore your map (as the basis of my argument is not based on SL population density), but instead I decided to look. Guess what I saw? I saw that by far most of the little flags (which btw are considered 'biased' in statistical terms, as they're not neutrally sampled) are leaning towards the east coast. Going on that, looks like West Virgina would be a good spot.

Add that to the fact that SanFran is more than adequately serviced, then it becomes even more clear that SanFran is a bad choice.




Take a statistics course and learn what a 'proper' statistical sampling is. One does not need to sample all 110,000 active accounts (if it's even that high), there are well defined methods to determine what sample size would be statistically significant.

In either case, it's still a much better number than the zero samples taken in the SanFran decision process.

In the meantime, if you'd like to continue trying to 'debate' with red herrings, nonsensical extreme comparisons, belittling, strawman arguments and self-answering questions, then you can go ahead. As for myself, I'll be sticking to logic, persuasive language and an open mind.

Newfie, if you feel, after the fourteen posts to this thread you made prior to this one you're still at the explaining basic concepts stage, I'd suggest you stop. Really. Just step away from the computer. You're not helping your own argument.

With all due respect, you are acting like an obsessed misanthrope.

You disagree with the location and/or process by which it was chosen. Fine, and the organizers have noted your objections. Nothing you can say or do about the perceived problems with the process and decision for SLCC'06's location will be constructive at this point.

For the sake of the community, you should drop your sidelines planning process lawyering and instead throw your weight behind helping this LindenLab.com/Secondlife.com hometown event gain a positive momentum... or just get the hell out of the way of the folks who've been striving to make it happen.

Of that I agree. In fact, I had suspected my voicing a disgreement would have been all but ignored from the start. What my goal is here is to raise awareness of the issue, and maybe for a future year it'll be acknowledged and actually considered. I honestly do not expect it to have an immediate change; but then again, it's a guaranteed lack of change if nobody speaks up.



If you do not like the way I try to contribute, then please feel free to contribute in your own way. I am of the opinion that sometimes if one doesn't speak up about an issue, and stand as the loner against the tide, then it'll never get said, and never get dealt with.

Well, let's see. The first three posts listed are for the same thing; a group of friends (10? 12 people?) going to Linden Lab to check it out.

The last post are two friends going to Linden Lab to check it out.

Somehow I don't really consider these conventions.




One good example would be "significantly" more than zero.





Generally speaking more folks live on the east coast than they do on the west coast, or in the middle of the US. Ergo it would make sense that more people would be playing from there.

But! You say population density isn't the basis for your argument; then what is? That nobody consulted you and your no-doubt very important opinion? Where would you have suggested?

Also! The last SLCC was held in NYC. That's the east coast. Maybe they wanted to balance it out this year and send it on the west coast? You know, for the folks that don't want to drive 3000 miles? Just a thought.





Adequately serviced? If by adequately serviced you mean "sometimes people visit Linden Lab", then I guess you're right. It wouldn't make much sense to roll into Atlanta, Georgia looking for Second Life merchandise.

I try not to let illogical arguments and temper tantrums, no matter how well-worded, stay unanswered on the forums. You've yet to convince me that this is simply not a personal temper tantrum and/or vendetta against the SLCC volunteers, for whatever reason. You're not happy with SLCC. You won't give anybody any non-vague feedback as to why you're pissed, nor where you would have the damn thing.

FYI Folks -- we have an official SLCC Group Forum. We will be using the group forum for some announcements, polls and feedback. Be sure to check it out if you want your voice to be heard of if you have questions, kewl ideas etc.

I should probably go to this. I need to see what happens to the fabric of space-time when too many Luskwoodians gather in one physical location.

It is my understanding the private group forums also have moderators. Dare I ask if such will be true, and what will be the criteria for posting there? Is it going to be one-sided, or will dissenting opinions be permitted?

Yes, there are three moderators in the group. Everything should be fine as long as the general forum guidelines are upheld.

No matter where conventions ( community or otherwise) are held, you will never please everyone.
I'm in the UK. So to me it makes no difference. The sooner the Sl " Community" stops navel gazing and realise this is a WORLD Community, the better.

And I'll be in San Francisco..in August

Jennyfur and I will be in the UK in late June / early July - we may try to put together some kind of SL get together while there. Probably just a pub location and an invite, but it'd be great to meet more SLers! We're glad to have the international community taking notice and attending. Last year, we had people in from Germany, the UK, France, and Sweden (among other places) attend; it was wonderful!

If you want we can start an ongoing poll in the SLCC group forum for SLCC 2007 locations -- given the population growth of Second Life and considering that the user base will be in the millions by then that there may be multiple SLCC locations next year.

This is a great idea. Rather than exact locations, we might vote for areas such southeastern US, south China, southeastern US, Europe, Central Canada, southeastern US, et cetera.

I'd be more than happy just reaching at least a single point SLCC location, since this year it's just the SLC...but I digress.

To the end of trying to get as informed as possible response from the community, I'd like to suggest an in-world set of polling stations scattered through SL. This not only means the WA and telehubs (though that'd be a good start), but also private locations. I'd be more than happy to host a polling station on my plots throughout the grid.

Heck, I'd even donate my time and effort to script the data collection mechanism.

I am working with the owner of the Crow Bar to see if we can do a full setup on Sat evening for live music. This will be an extension of the live music that we have on Fri night and will allow more time for all those that want to come down and participate or just have fun. So please let me know if you are interested in performing on Sat night.

Starr Singer, Mattie Morgan and myself will be bringing equipment that hopefully will accomodate eveyones needs. (minus instruments) If there is something that you think we might need for you in the way of setup please IM me.

I will post more once I receive additional information from him. I guess in the big cities it requires an entertainment permit which he is waiting for a reply on.
