Eh, LL is in San Francisco, thus it makes sense that the SLCC should be there, since on key objective, I would think is to maximize linden-resident communications. Any way you cut it it costs money to travel, and obviously more people are going to have to travel than not.

Thus SF is a the logical location. More Logical than NYC, for example.

As stated before, read the original posts to get the full detail. In it you'll also find equally logical reasons why San Fran would be the singularly worst choice for a location. But dont take my word for it, go ahead and read it.

From: someone
All this ranting bunk about the community not being involved is just silly adolescent grandstanding to work up a controversy. And trust me I know a lot about silly, adolescent grandstanting.

That is indeed your own opinion. Personally, I dont care if it's taken as grandstanding or not. In either case, I'll be more than happy to state my opinion on the matter. As have been seen a dozen times throughout this thread.

From: someone
really if you want the SLCC to be representative of the community, just show up..in person or online. Sitting in your corner and pouting because you were left out of one decision is not really productive, or participating in the community.

If you don't like things, do it yourself next year. But participate....

That's a nice sentiment, except that it's circular logic. If what it takes to be part of community is to attend, then you can't be part of the community if you can't attend. But if you can't attend, you can't be part of the community. Etc etc.

The issue that's stated all along is the SLC organizers' decision shafted many parts of the community, and the decision to do so was without any involvement or feedback from the community. Lack of feedback beforehand means they're going to get plenty afterwards. And so, here I am, at least speaking up for my own self.

..Which I will continue to do so, despite if it hurts people's sensitivities. Welcome to the real world, where it's not all peaches and cream, and pretending to be a "community" convention without really engaging the "community".

... there was an opportunity to bring the SL community together in a great way, and because of the self-interests of a limited set of people, that opportunity was thrown away. ...
- Newfie

I really don't see why you say that. The SLCC is totally an opportunity to bring together the community of SL. It seems you're letting your self-interests (you being a limited set of people) get in the way of cheerfully accepting this year's location and, in the spirit of being part of the community, volunteering time, organizing an event in your local area (for folks in your same region who can't make the trip), anything, other than complain.

I think it's cool that folks are volunteering their time to organize the event and, as a lucky local girl, I'm about to raise my hand to pitch in. Last year, New York. This year, San Francisco. Next year -- who knows? If you want to make a difference, step up to the plate and get involved.

What things 'seem' like do not mean they 'are'. Go do a search on the forums for the original postings, you'll see plenty of threads (and yes including from myself) that explain very clearly why the location was a bad decision. And you'll also find many responses afterwards showing that the SLC committee intentionally left the community out of their process.

But then again, who would you expect to complain...the person that was having their ego stroked, or the person that got shafted? You decide.

In either case, I'll be more than happy to stand by my statements.

Just take my advice and stay away from Fisherman's Wharf, which put "tourist trap" into the dictionary.

so much for this year being on the east coast.

It's the east coast of the Pacific Ocean.

Why is everyone so land-centric?

Newfie mentions "patting yourself on the back in self-righteous indignation".

I don't think righteous indignation and back patting really have much in common. Do people actually pat themselves on the back at all? Isn't it kind of awkward and prone to make people looking at you wonder if you have something like a bee or a scorpion on you back?

Nevermind the fact that Miami, Florida probably isn't the best spot for a SL con. Because, you know, the world is hosted in SAN FRANCISCO.

Well, Miami worked out perfectly fine for the past two MTV Video Music Awards, but you know that was nothing like the scale of this thing, eh? It's no less viable as a location than NYC. By your logic, it should never be anywhere but SF. Anyway, it's over, SF is the location, and people will either come or they won't. I was not initially happy with how it was handled either, but it is what it is. Personally as a location, I would have chosen Las Vegas over SF (far more entertaining), but that's just me.

The organizers are putting a tremendous amount of effort into it, and no location is ever going to please everyone. If there is one thing that I hope those organizers do take from some of the criticism is that getting the community more involved in choosing a location earlier on and with more exposure would be appreciated.

Fair enough.

Me? I'm gonna have some fun -- I look forward to meeting folks and dancing the night away in a lag-free sim that shouldn't crash! (Unless, of course, we have an earthquake, but, nah, forget I said that!)

Now, should I get a new gray outfit to wear?

By your logic, it should never be anywhere but SF.

Actually you're right. By my logic, all places on the globe are equidistant to one another, thanks to the ubiquitous airplane. Therefore, one should hold the convention at the place that has the most similar-interest items that are related to the con in question.

We can even pull some psuedo-math. Oh yes, I'm gonna.

For all possible sites within range of an airport, we can assign a point to them.
From there, we can assign more points to places that have multiple similar interests that relate to the convention.

In this case, SLCC is a convention about Second Life. Where is Second Life hosted? San Fran. Where is Linden Lab? San Fran. Where do most of the Lindens live? San Fran.

Three points for San Francisco, for a total of four points.

London might have another point or two due to the Liasons there. So two points London.

Almost everything else at this stage in SL's life is going to stay at one point. Maybe another half point if a high concentration of SLers live there (like San Fran or NYC).

Therefore it would behoove the SLCC to always be held in San Francisco, if only because it's nearest everything related to SL.

Well, Miami worked out perfectly fine for the past two MTV Video Music Awards.

I missed the link where MTV held a public poll on where to hold the VMAs? Oh wait, they never did. A core of people responsible for actually running the thing decided Miami was a great location, and planned the event. Sounds somewhat parallel to me! And you're talking to someone who used to have to stay awake throughout the VMAs to make sure the results were posted in "real-time" on CDnow.com. :) WHY NOT PHILLY!?!!!

That said, we'll definitely take these criticisms into account when planning next year's convention(s). I just wish a single complainer would IM me or show up for a meeting. That would be a start.

I can't wait to see y'all in San Fran - I'm all geeked up now! :)

Regards,

-Flip

How about instead making it an invite to the entire community?

But I digress. I'd be more than happy to contribute in whichever form I can for the next convention. This year's one I'm boycotting (for obvious reasons), but I'd be happy to try to contribute to the next one.

Hmmm desicions desicions - I have a weeks worth of vacation time to blow this year.. nothing planned other than work and other stuff....

It's far enough down the line to put a lil cash aside for it....

...hmmmm to go or not to go? Or say I'm going and not show up....

Damn - maybe I should hold a poll or something.

I'll go - but only if Flipper cooks me a hamburger and Jen has a room temperature Guinness or Newcastle (cigarette and lighter optional) waiting for me when I step off the plane.

Flipper, I cannot wait until SLCC! Both Arito and I will be coming up there. I think you did a fantastic thing by including the west coast in a convention. I agree with Lordfly in that it should be held in San Fran every year, logically.

Don't let the bad apple(s) get to you. You have devoted a lot of your time to do this for the community and I thank you. I look forward to drinking a few, shootin the poop with some of the Liasons and meeting a lot of different people. Without you and Jennyfur, I dont think this convention would exist.

Perhaps not just dismissing people as complainers because they disagree would also be a start.

I'd go to London if it fit my schedule well enough. It's a great place to visit. But I'm casting my 2007 vote goes for Hong Kong.

first of all, it's great to have this date nailed down! i'm hoping to attend not only personally, but with a (non-SL)friend, as well and this will help us to figure out how to work it all out.. besides the money part.

as far as community involvement goes, we may not have seen the community involved to the degree that could be acheived, but it's hard to get the word out via the forums where only a percentage of SLers visit or in-world either, due to the difficulty of spreading a message throughout SL without any decent means of doing so. however, hopefully something can be figured out for next year.

the SLCC organizers could use Radio Linden, resident run stations, community bulletin boards, spreading word by mouth, etc.. encourage others to speak up and offer any ideas/critiques they have about the convention.. not to mention joining the committee! :D

--

now, other than all of that, i also wanted to point out that (as previously mentioned) Fort Mason holds many events throughout the year. i'm not sure about other events, but partially coinciding with the SLCC dates is the Making Art, Making Change event:
The Greater Bay Area Arts Education Network connects artists, educators, community builders & youth in this conference. Participants create art, participate in & view performances by local youth arts organizations & build an action plan for achieving social justice in local communities through art & arts learning.

--

this year sounds like it's going to be bigger and better than last year's and i am definitely going to do all i can to attend. it sounds like there have been some hefty changes besides the sheer size alone.

some of those changes is the larger presence of resident content and the opportunity for anyone from the community to help shape what's available to attend, to learn, to share.

beautiful work guys, i just wish i had come and jumped on board earlier.. but for now, i'll have to find out what's going on with nametags this year. ;)

I can't believe that in 99 posts about a convention in SF starting on August 18th nobody mentions the fact that the Giants are at home and start a three game series with the Dodgers that night. What are the chances of getting tickets to any of those games? I just checked and if I buy now I can get great seats.
