Broadly offending content ~ what is it for *you*?

OK, let's get one thing straight, when I'm talking about certain sexual fetishes I find offensive, I'm talking about stuff that most people haven't heard of, that I wish I hadn't heard of, that are in the "once you've seen X you can never unsee it" category. Vore and dolcett are at the mild end. I don't want to talk about them, the fact that there's people who are *into* them squicks me.

Arcady, I'm right with you on the no teen-merge thing. We're supposed to believe LL that this is not about merging the grids (hah, right, and I suppose next they're going to sell us the Brooklyn Bridge too). This is really part of the problem, forget protecting the minors from the adults, who's going to protect the adults from the minors? Nothing in this plan anywhere addresses that fundamental issue. Our only protection is the fact that supposedly everybody on the main grid is 18 and older. Take that protection away and even being on the adult continent won't save you from a prison sentence.

Until Linden Lab starts introducing sanity into their actions I will continue to oppose the whole mess and be the voice in the wilderness advocating a sane policy here. Some have already said the thread has degenerated into the same old stale arguments. Well why not? They're stale because sanity is not an acceptable part of the equation.

parallel parking is not so rough. The really hard parking is when you are backing into a parking spot and you cannot back in straight, but have to turn into it -- I am soooo hopeless at that.

Oh, another thing, regarding the age of consent in Japan and other countries. Irrelevant. Again we are bound by United States law. The age of consent is 18. Therefore the age of consent in SL is 18. Not the avatar's age, the human's age. Supposedly everybody on the grid IS 18 or older. That's our legal protection as I said before, we're dealing with 18 year olds until it's shown otherwise, and that is how things work online as far as legal protections. You go to a site that's only for adults and you have a reasonable expectation that everybody is an adult. You go to a site that isn't and you don't. Second Life, as it exists today, is in fact for adults only, so we can asssume that everybody's an adult and act accordingly. Merge in the teen grid and that changes everything, but the age verification methods in place, are a sure way to guarantee the teens come to the adult continent. A merger that has no business ever happening.

I don't think you can label something that offends *you* as "broadly offending". In fact, I think it's a logic problem that gets people upset when something is labeled "broadly offensive", because I don't think people understand what "broadly offensive" means.

There's a tendency to think the world is full of people like me, and that things that don't offend me shouldn't be labeled "broadly offensive". This is a simple problem of logic, not semantics. The same logic problem causes people to think SL is doomed if I'm convinced to take my marbles home and not give another dime to LL.

But to answer the question in spirit if not as-asked...

There is very little that I find truly offensive, but there is lots that make SL seem not like an adult experience. And by "adult" I mean actually mature, and not naughty, sexy, or whatever. And though little of it actually offends me, most things of a sexual nature that I can encounter without looking for them fall into this category. That is, I believe it's a good policy to separate sexual content (and I acknowledge the difficulty defining it) so that one has the choice of avoiding it.

Also not truly offensive, as you'd likely define it, but still detracting from an adult experience, would be hucksterism. To fix this, though, LL would have to change its business model of tricking people into shoveling money into holes.

I agree, it's a big possibility LL are priming the mainland for a merge with the teen grid, actually for ages I assumed they were doing this ratings thing to let real life children on the mainland now until someone corrected me.

This might be a flame bait response, but I don't see the big deal anyway. I don't do it, but also don't see it. We are over eighteen, and we are avatars!

It isn't depicting sex with a minor, it's depicting ROLEPLAY of sex with a minor. You have to ask yourself, would it be alright if it was in a Medieval roleplay sim, where girls had sex at a much earlier age? What about in a roleplay sim set in Alabama, with parental consent.

I have a friend that used to work at a strip club (offline) that wore little English schoolgirl costumes. That being sick and/or suggestive is up to one's own personal opinion, but it certainly isn't illegal, because she is an adult.
