Contrast the duck thing with this situation: SL sells 12 islands to a group that wants to RP the antebellum South (of the USA). A major focus of activity is centered around avatars depicting Africans and descendants of Africans---they are whipped, raped, auctioned off, etc. This initial set of 12 islands grows to over a hundred, with many outposts of the Antebellum movement increasingly moving to Mainland sims. A person of African ancestry hears that SL is amazing and registers. As he explores, he sees constant references to this Antebellum role-play phenomenon--the sims themselves, shops in Search and Classified that cater to the players, blogs and websites that are filled with posts about 'how to tame a buck' and 'it's not gay to _____ a buck in the _____ because he's not a person, he's property' and 'how can it be rape if they're subhuman anyway?' and the like. And though the new registrant doesn't go to those sims, or patronize those shops...he can't help feeling that SL's default/implicit endorsement of this phenomenon...leads him to feel rather...unwelcome. Substitute any reference to Africans in the above for 'women' and you have Gor - with one exception, Gor is based in fiction rather than fact. _____________________

...and yes, my hypothetical example (from a post just above) can't exist in SL. Because SL's rules would prohibit it. SL rules DO prohibit certain types of acts---those listed in the post---being committed against some demographic classes of human beings. But they're okay with those acts being committed against other demographic classes of human beings. (Which does seem a tad hypocritical.) You are continuing to show discrimination in favour of certain demographic classes of human beings and discrimination against all classes of ducks. Pep (Your example for the human beings was suggested as being broadly offensive, whereas your example for ducks involved the simulation of anascide, which could only be considered grossly offensive, if you were a duck.) _____________________

the point I was trying to make was not about who someone might pretend to be, but about their actual, unchangeable demographic classifications. I have been repeatedly told that you have to take people at "face value" in sl (and in the forums come to that) which means that their "actual" unchangeable demographic classifications are at best indeterminate, and at worst, pure fiction! My 2 cents. More of "Annoyances" than anything. If I find something offensive I dont go looking for it.
* Gesture Spam- the kind that fills up the screen with ASCII art * Ban-Line happy residents- if you dont want people there, buy a private sim. If you dont want Griefers to do stuff make the land No Build/No Script/No Push * Those annoying "For Sale" signs on 16m parcels * Censorship of anything. * Religious Nutcases or Moralists who think I should live by their view points. * Tomatoes. I dont like 'em!!! The taste makes me gag. * Group Spam * Really COOL builds set to "Private". WTF?? Everything else.... Go For It!!!! Besides, I dont find pixels on my screen 'offensive'. SL is as "real" as Pamela Anderson's Boobs. So meh.... dress up as an "under age" pixel while raping a donkey that recites the works of Gor while carrying a swastika flag with particles of GW Bush & Goatse float around Doesnt bother me at all. _____________________

Ummm. I didn't read the rest of this thread, so I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned but "What is 'broadly offending to me'?" is an oxymoron. "Broadly Offensive" means that "it is offensive to a large number (broad range) of people". So you (or any other one person) cannot define what is broadly offensive. Only asking a large sampling of people and finding out what offends a substantial number of people can you define it. In the forums one of the things I find offensive is when people post without having read the rest of the thread. I can't decide whether it is more offensive to admit to it or to attempt to brazen it out. Pep (Particularly when they repeat a point already made...made...made...) _____________________

I wouldn't mind my profile being here. Why is it inappropriate? One swallow doesn't make a summer. Just because you may choose to be "yourself" and know others that do so as well, does not make it even a majority circumstance. People's avatars personalities are not necessarily consistent with their real life personality, and where they have alts there are likely to be inconsistencies among them also. They are different environments; they should have different standards; disciplinary action should not cross the boundaries of those environments; if I rape someone inworld I don't have my posting privileges removed or get prosecuted in the real world. Just because someone may consider me "broadly offensive" in the forums does not mean that I should be prevented from conducting myself inworld in a perfectly civilised manner. Anything that involves Hate or Mental Harm toward a human being.
I don't usually encounter this as much in "content" that most would label "questionable"....but more so in just simple, normal, every day interactions. Anything else would fall under the Life is Too Short Rule....simple click of the button, only takes a second....(easier said, than done, some days). I can usually click a button to stop the hate or mental harm....(usually)....but hard to click that button when you see it effecting someone who cannot click so easily....or someone who will carry it with them, after the click. |

People who refuse to respect that there is a time and place for sexual roleplay and slavery roleplay, and that not everyone wants to see it. People who failed to flag blatantly sexual material with the "mature content" box. They are the reason LL is doing all this Adult stuff now and forcing it on everyone.
As far as what I think LL should ban for being broadly offensive: -child sex -use of the word "rape" to describe fantasy RP -Dolcett and vore -Glorification of genocide or RL abuse of a class of people. Examples: The Holocaust, enslavement of Africans, human trafficking. -Gender-based slavery being RPed in sims not specifically geared towards that particular group. It's broadly offensive based on gender to many, many men and women. -Spam tactics to recruit people for any type of RP. Example #1 here is of course Bloodlines! That's all. Lots of other things bother me, but I just avoid them. And some of them are PG! I have a Teleport option and I'm not afraid to use it. _____________________
