Broadly offending content ~ what is it for *you*?

Hey, I'm gonna break the cardinal rule of all forums and breach a serious topic. Just mark your snark posts clearly, please

What's broadly offending *to you*?


Daring to ask, I'll go first.


Not offending *to me*:

a) People doing teh sexies with their toons: not offending

b) BDSM, pets, sex toys &c: kinda boring, not offending

c) Gor: too badly written to take seriously; not offending

d) Simulated rape and stuff: incredibly tacky but not offending

e) extreme violence: extremely juvenile but not offending

f) cussin' curmudgeons, activists, religious fundies &c: not offending

g) okay, I admit it, bling is tacky but not offending.



Broadly offending, *to me*:

a) repeated marketing surveys under the guise of academia

b) micro parcel extortion (or any callous scam, really)

c) pardon the term, "mindf**ks" ~ causing others emotional pain via deception for fun

d) pretending to have sex with minors: broadly offending

e) do gooder vigilante squads: deeply offending power trippers

f) clear hate stuff like supremacy propaganda (I find it offending even if legal)

g) 'spite builds' spoiling an area for everyone, for any reason

Behaving like an asshole.

This covers the cases of someone who is not a real card-carrying asshole deep down inside, but behaves like one.
It also allows genuine assholes off the hook provide they can keep their impulses in check.

PS Briana, Sling, others to follow: please can you be explicit about whether what you are describing is offensive to you or not; although Des has asked one question he has effectively requested views on the converse as well and it wouldn't do to cause confusion . . .

Broadly offensive:

* There's a few sexual fetishes that squick me. I won't go into details but when I run into them I just go somewhere else.

* Really bad avatar shapes, particularly guys shaped like tacks and huge prim boobs filled with helium.

* Bots and camping holes. When I find green dots they should be edible. I mean... um...

* "Click me for free lindens!"

* Gesture spam.

* Control freaks who hang around any of the above complaining about them.

The first one was my first thought too- but to each his own as the woman said when she kissed her cow - with out toomuch description- what's the second- I won't Google it- 'cause I made that mistake with the first a couple years ago

my offending list would be the same as yours but I would add:

in-my-face photorealistic pornography ( I don't care who looks at pr0n but I don't need them to show it to ME)

content theft

griefers

Offensive:

Any RL marketing or selling in world.

Scamming and thievery.

Abandoning all basic human courtesies in world.

Sexual imagery involving children, or what appear to be children. *Not "little people" but obvious childlike appearance.

Overly moralistic proselytizing. Minding someone else's business.

Thought Police, or forcing your views on to someone else.

Treating customrs who pay you a lot of money with contempt, and not leveling with them.

Not being able to get out of your own way when running your business.

Just being a dick in general.

Dolcett, vore, I've heard of those things but they are so far beyond my SL experience they didn't even occur to me. Both would possibly be either a) deeply, deeply offending or b) so incredibly lamely pathetic that I would burst out laughing.

Oh, and kid avatars, another hot button I forgot all about: *not* inherently offending to me at all.

Broadly offensive: Telling me I can't simulate something in a virtual world because the connotations of realizing it in the physical world is intrinsically harmful. (=_=)

I'm like and am cool with public sex, nudity, swearing, noobies, gaming the system, debates/arguments, land owners rules even if they are mad, LL making a profit, helping others out, all the different beings and second lives, SL learning curve.

Not cool with, blocking views or purposely ugly or annoying builds, gangs of griefers onto one person, PG vigilantes imposing morals on other peoples land and memberships, spam attacks, LL overlording it's members with out compensation for loss (open sims, adult etc)

Deeply Offensive = being forced into someone else's RP or even bothered with it. (i.e. Bloodlines)

Offensive = Being expected to be responsible for someone else's 'predictable experience'.

Annoying not offensive = Someone else assuming 'rights' over anything I am paying for. (i.e.; you have a right to come on my land any time you want and just stand there and stare at me)

-racism offends me more than all the other 'isms' combined.

-gesture spam

-'baby' voices ("halllloooo sissy!" etc)

-Tummy Talkers that take over public chat

-porn involving kids

What's a tummy talker?

For the second... imagine Sylvester actually caught Tweety, or Wiley Coyote caught the Roadrunner. Except with sexual overtones.

Oh, Ian aren't you lucky not to know. The 'baby' tells everyone how it is growing, how it is making its mommy hungry, etc. Some are set to go off every couple of minutes. I will admit I got an evil Tummy Talker as a prank, but that's for another thread.

Offensive

Automatic group inviters that can't figure out you clicked decline a few seconds ago.

Half-baked amateurs holding themselves out as serious, legitimate business-persons.

Linden Lab, with a new "policy" or promise, offends me almost daily.

So what's this deal with "broadly offensive" as opposed to simply "offensive"?

Pep (Is it so that incompetent or biased inconsistency can be justified?)

"Broadly" offending: (I'm defining this by the things that bug me in RL, even those I recognize I have no business doing anything about).

- Anything Republican (sorry, I'm a devout partisan)
- Anything racist
- Denials of the impact of systematic/institutional racism by listing anecdotes of personal racism in the counter.
- BDSM / Gor - anything where a dom/sub is on gender lines.
- Disempowerment setups - ie: non-equal social relationships.
- Denial of science (preaching that science is false).
- Anyone who preaches science as fact (as if it was a religion, but denying such) - ie: athiests.
- Anyone who preaches religious as fact, or uses it as a basis to follow human political agendas.

Automatic group inviters that don't know you're already in the right group with the group tag up.

I'd add accusing child avatars of being perverted and a pedo merely for being a child avatar. I find that attitude highly offensive.
