Broadly offending content ~ what is it for *you*?

Nothing that I feel strongly enough to complain about it.

Most of the stuff in this thread I'd file under "mildly annoying" rather than any degree of offensive.

Agree with the 'anything racist' OR having the appearance of racism, i.e; "oh but not because he's black, heck I have black friends......it's because he's......whatever......but not because he's black.' Give me a break with that. Or at least be honest about it.

Well, the idea here is to see if there's a common thread to what's offending, i.e. broadly offending (or not).

For instance, say "the Community" (capital C, it's a mythical beast like a dragon or a unicorn) said across hundreds of posts that it could care less about nakie toons, for instance. Would nakie toons then be okay? Or say it turned out that, oh I don't know... "oatmeal" was broadly offending to just about everyone.

Certainly a lot of policy is driven by a) real world laws and b) the kind of residents desired. For instance if we were swarmed with dill pickle fetishists and they took root here from day one, it might discourage others to go into that greenish, salty hive of briny freaks. At some point, this is a legitimate business issue.

Or what if, say, the community *did* find that oatmeal was broadly offending? Would popular sentiment prevail? Would rules be changed, and the oatmeal lovers be put on notice?

This is actually a serious question, Friday~threadish as it sounds.

I pretty much agree with everything Desmond said except I would add bestiality. I can't remember the store but they were stocked full of animals you could f**k.

I have a 12 year old daughter who I wouldn't want to get into adult land, but I wouldn't panic for a second if it happens. My guess is she'd find cartoons shagging a bit would interest her for all of 10 minutes.

That is also the point we'd probably have a little discussion about what was going on and ithat it was neither good or bad. Different strokes fpr different folks

You have already done more to try to define "broadly offensive" than Linden Lab has.

It takes more than just one asking oneself, "What do I think is offensive?" or "What do I think offends most people?"

Actual research is useful.

I guess I'm just not offended as much as some. To me being offended by gesture spam is a bit silly. Irritated? Maybe, although I'm not even irritated by it much, unless it's the ASCI gestures that take up the whole screen. When I'm DJing and trying to keep up with chat, it makes it difficult.

Other things that don't offend me:
-Tummer Talkers
-Group Invites (Unless I've never been to their store/shop and they come into the sim and just start spamming. This would be an irritation, not something that offends me.)
-RPing being foisted on me (I politely tell them I'm not in their game and move on. Nothing to be offended up there.)
-Sex? No, I'm a grownup...kinda. (consenting adults, of course)
-Griefing...yet another minor irritant
-most everything I don't consider offensive....maybe stupid or irritating, but not offensive

What *I* consider offensive
-Violence and terrorism and stalking and abuse...not just giving shit abuse, but real abuse that causes trauma and harm
-Racism and sexism in any form, including religous "superiority"
-Any type of religious fundamentalism whereby someone seems to think they have The Truth and needs to save me (And what is this "being saved" nonsense.....past tense in any type of spirituality is worthless. If you're "saved," congratulations on yesterday's "victory," now stop being a moron today please?)
-Theft and fraud and deceit, especially when perpetrated by a group or person who is claiming high moral and spiritual ground, IE our previous administration.
-In short, I find someone that causes other people real harm to be offensive. By real harm, I"m not talking about someone who thinks that "those gays are harming my little baby's impressionable mind...." That's perceived harm based on your hate and fear, thank you.

So yeah, I'm not offended by much except something that actually harms and abuses me or someone else.

In other words, there's really not much to be offended by in Second Life, to be honest. And if I'm irritated by alot in SL, maybe I should get a grip and look at myself, rather than why someone "Hooing" really bugs me.

I don't think seeing anything avators doing would offend me, unless an adult and child AV in sexual positions or racism, hate speech etc.

What I do not like is seeing real porn photos in my face while out and about, out in the open at huge sizes.

I will add my serious answer that the things I find most offensive are violence, misogyny, and slavery.

The context of the question about what I find offensive is that it relates to Linden Lab's new Adult policies.

As long as I have a reasonable chance to avoid the things I find offensive, I am happy.

I am not in favor of Second Life banning the things I find offensive. It is better to let people explore these things in pretend and decide for themselves whether they are good or bad for real action.

In the end, real social change comes from people voluntarily rejecting bad ideas, rather than being forced to conform with societal ideals. People become committed to following through on the actions they choose for themselves; they seek to rebel against actions forced upon them when the authority figures aren't around to stop them.

Yeah, that's just weird. One of the regulars at a nude beach / strip club I dance in has that going right now. It can get pretty odd when you've got erotic chat on one hand, and counting baby fingers on the other...

What really gets me is the thing has poorly written chat, so its messages show for other people as 'you feel x or y.'

Not surprising. He has shown to be a better businessman than Linden Lab has.

Well when one can TP away in a split second cus someones having it off with an octopus or being a facist, in that sense nothing can harm anyone to much, not like these things can in real life.

Well all of this stuff can be as offensive as it likes as long as it's not pushed at me - I feel like yeah ok whatever- live and let live.

The most offensive thing to me is people - like the Crusaders we had here last week- trying to save me from myself. There are several things mentioned here I don't much care for- so I don't go to places I might find it. There- no need for me to be offended I can go back to enjoying my very nicely unpredictable SL- Predictability breeds mediocrity - we have enough of that as it is.

Nothing is offending me.

Understatements like this are kinda offensive... but not broadly.

For the rest, I am not offended by much. It is a virtual world, so if 2 adults play sexxies with kid avatars or animal avatars or who knows what kind of avatars, I could not care less.

My opinion probably is broadly offensive as well.
