From: Marcuw Schnook Nice post. And I agree wholeheartedly with it.
The point is, and that's inevitable, people sometimes get RL feelings for virtual toons/lives and start acting irrational. And that moment is when RL hurting takes place.
Cheers! That is part of the line I was talking about. You spend enough time breaking someone down and it will affect their RL. It doesn't mean that the person is weak willed or irrational. You tell someone who loves you that they are worthless, eventually they will believe you no matter how strong they are. Some "Masters" will never take it that far, but others will. Most think that they will never fall for something like that, but you'd be suprized at how cunning manipulators can be. They find a way in to make you believe that they aren't really doing what you think they are and you are wrong in thinking such a thing. You can attempt to seperate SL from RL as much as you want, but hurt is hurt no matter where it happens.

As mentioned before i hold adults responsible for their state of mind. And as long as they can sustain their first and second life without harming more than themselves, i do not even see a valid excuse for superimposing my assesment of their situation on them. Do you see a moral obligation to safe vulnerable people from themselves?

From: Lorelei Patel It's not "cousaler" or "councilor" (unless you mean someone on a city council). Counselor. Thank you for pointing that out. It makes you wonder how someone can say they hold a position that they can't even spell. I know I have to type my title many times, and I would think a counselor would have to make reports in which they would have to sign their names. So you think she could spell it properly. I know you made statements to the effect that your grammar was poor and you need a spell checker but if you really want a serious discussion, you should take the time to express it halfway decently or you lose the effect of your argument.

Do you see a moral obligation to safe vulnerable people from themselves? Life isn't all back and white like that. You hold an adult woman responsible for being in an abusive relationship, be it vanillia, BDSM, D/s or Gor? It happens in each and every type of relationship but those in BDSM, D/s, and gor have to be extra cautious as the line isn't as clear as in vanilla relationships. You would have gotton this had you bothered to read my first post. As for the last question, had you bothered to read my post you would have understood that I do not believe that its 1. saving from themselves or 2. they are always vulnerable. Do I think gor should be banned? No read my posts. I don't like Gor, but not all Goreans are bad. Do I think bad goreans should be banned? Yes. Just like the bad predators who are into vanilla, BDSM or D/s. If you are going to put a blanket of responsiblity on every adult no matter what happens to them, then you are living in a world that I don't live in. People are made up by their experiences and what they do with those experiences.

Yes. And it is their responsibility to seek help when they can't deal with those experiences on their own. That's among other things what they have friends for. And if friends can't for whatever reason help there are professionals they can go to. To put someone under tutelage because a random concerned citizen judges their circumstances as harmful would be a gross violation of their rights. You could as well start deprogramming cult members because they devote their lifes to a fringe religion. There is a danger in it, yes. But putting themselves in this danger in their pursuit of happiness is their right. But as you put it earlier, the world isn't black and white, so i simply assume that you do not plan to help the unwilling against their will.

I think the Gor thing is a bit silly, really, but...I have no problems with it. It is telling, though, psychologically....
But I do question the claim that "A lot" of women have rape fantasies. Define "a lot" please. And how do you know how many? Are there scientific polls? When were they taken? By whom? What statistical processes were used?
Really, all these claims are just silly without some sort of support.

This thread is forcing me to ask: Does anyone sell 'official giant praying mantis overlord' avatars? If I were to find one, I assure you I'd rp being a space mantis overlord very seriously.

I roleplay gor. And there are two type of people...the types that simply roleplay it online like acting in a movie, and those that are "lifestylers". A lot of the roleplayers get a kick out of the people that live gor in real life.
However, most of us are in Gor for the combat aspect. You cannot pass judgement on something you haven't actually done research on. I'm sure a lot of people hear horror stories about it. But, in the sim I'm in, all roleplay is consensual. And for me imparticular, I'm there for the combat and the people.
Rape in general is one thing, but roleplaying rape is a completely different thing. Like I mentioned in another post, I can run around all day on a video game, shoot and kill people. But when it comes to so much as hitting a squirrel in the road, I feel horrible. A lot of people are like that.
Also, a majority of the gorean roleplayers do not roleplay rape. Some do, but not most.
Now, for some it does affect their real life. But so do a lot of things. There are also some that do roleplay in the realm that don't roleplay it properly. But gor is not one big 24/7 orgy and a majority of the sex that happens does *not* happen IN the gorean sim's at all. In fact, I've been roleplaying in Gorean sim's since March or so, and only once have I seen someone roleplaying out a sexual scene. Most is done on privately owned land or in IM's.

Really, all these claims are just silly without some sort of support. I imagine studies like those are hard to conduct, as many people aren't willing to be open about such things. I did find this, however, written by psychologist Clayton E. Tucker-Ladd From: someone It comes as a surprise to some people that rape fantasies occur to about 24% of men and 36% of women (Knox, 1984, p. 283). Over 10% of women report that being forced to have sex is their favorite sexual fantasy (Doskoch, 1995). Remember, fantasies are not wishes! The rape fantasies of women may reflect a desire, not to be hurt, but to be attractive, to be passive, and to avoid the responsible for the sexual act. For unclear reasons, a few men and women find it sexy to inflict pain or to experience it. Conquest and/or humiliation fantasies are also common, i.e. to control a subordinate, to force someone, to be forced, to be seduced to have sex. Power, denial of responsibility, and anger get all mixed up with sex in fantasy--and maybe in real life.

So let me recap
- no that would take too long
- let me summarize:
Rape -bad
Violent sex roleplay and/or slavery, in a virtual world, performed by pixel-based avatars -is acceptable (notice the very careful avoidance of the term "rape" here)
as long as there is mutual consent granted by perfectly well-adjusted and life-affirming individuals who either are by nature balanced and well-adjusted in their outlook on life or have completed enough therapy to be considered by the counseling, psychiatric, or psychology standard instruments of normalacy to be so. Otherwise, -bad
Mis-spelling and incorrect grammar -bad
All correlation between RL and SL begin and end at the finger/keyboard/screen/eye (ignoring for the moment the Excite interfaces *grin*) interface. If Linden goes bankrupt/gets blown-up, Philiip finds God and pulls the plug - SL ends, RL continues.
Any similarity between SL and RL is purely coincidental. All characters and events in SL are make-believe. Streams of electrons running alone copper/gold pathways on a matrix of silicon through electronic switches and stored as variably polarized iron oxide molecules on spinning platters. That's it.

The most interesting part of these ‘outrage’ threads is the seeming inability of people to separate real life from a computer game. I'm not sure if this is a testament to SL and its ability to immerse players and create a real world or if it's something lacking in the individual.
In both cases the easy solution is to switch off and take time away from the computer. To be obsessive about the activities of other people and falsely attribute your own reasons and concerns to their behaviour is human nature but remember SL isn’t real. You have no idea who is behind an avatar but one thing is certain, they have the power to switch ‘off’ when they want. How much more power does one need?

The term rape fantasy is really a misnomer. How much does anyone want to bet that most so called rape fantasies are more about "being taken" and not the violence? In my own limited experiences with ds ::: coughsbullshitcough::: a lot of people can let go of inhibitions a lot easier when they pretend to be "forced" to do something.
And since SL lacks the physical component, a lot of exploration here seems to be far more extreme than when practiced in RL.
That being said, you're going to find wackos and sickos in every aspect of life, be it Gor, priests, butchers, bakers or candlestick makers.

It's hilarious that this thread is proving that we can never make an idiot proof land selling UI.
Close to 40% have voted to the first option in this poll here:
Which states,
no rape of any kind real or imagend is wrong
(option was discussed a few pages ago as well)
With cases like this, how the hell is LL supposed to make an idiot proof UI?

With cases like this, how the hell is LL supposed to make an idiot proof UI? That option can be read as either "no, rape of any kind is wrong" or "no rape (of any kind) is wrong" so if anything, it just shows how it easy it is to make UI that will confuse the hell out of most of your intended audience. It only takes not enough thought put into the wording.
