-where do i go?! i keep wandering around, hoping to find some interesting places but all of the places I land are sexual... there's more to SL than that, right?
-

Most of the sex and gambling places I've seen have been pretty specifically advertised, so you should always read the search page before you teleport. And don't accept unsolicited teleports from strangers.

That's how NOT to go places. As for places TO go I'd recommend these things:

- go to the search page and enter a few words of things that interest you. Whatever your interested in it's highly unlikely that you're the only one, there's probably at least one group out there to hook up with.

- Find a couple of zones you like and hang around. It doesn't take very long to start recognizing regulars and strike up conversations with them.

- I've met a lot of nice people while shopping. Browse around some shops, or some malls, you'll probably meet people.

Once you've met some people and started building a friends list then you can usually find something to do / somewhere to go just by checking in with your buddies.

-buying land--how do these transactions occur? what's the best way to find land (i.e. forums?) are there contracts or agreements, or is it just a done deal?

When you buy land it is a done deal. Look for first land by doing a search for it, at only 1L per meter it is a great way to get started. You only get it once, and you can sell for quite a bit more.

You can turn mature off by checking the box in search. That will help a little. Sadly, the casinos and strip clubs are very popular, but there is much more to SL. You have to look a little harder to find it. There are many people here involved in groups that share interests, and professionals that have businesses. Many of us are working to try and balance the landscape so there are productive things to do. Search the groups and find some friends to hang out with that share your interests. Odds are they can help you find more things to do as well.

Buy your first land, get a pre-fab home and start decorating your place. That is always fun if you have the cash.

-how do I change my profile? i thought I could do it from here on My Account but maybe not. what if i want people to be able to email or private message me? What is private messaging-- is it possible to send a messgae to another avatar while they're not logged on?

You can send an IM to a person if you see them in world and right click them to see their profile. If they are not in world and you kow their name then you can search for them and IM them that way. If they are not online then they will get your message when they log on. They will also get an email if they have that option selected.

If you find someone that you hit it off with you can offer them friendship as well. This will allow you to see when they are online and add them to your group if you like

Heck...start your own group and invite others

You have to make the most of this place...Remember that just about anything is possible

I remember when I first got to SL. I put a box on my head and someone standing outside a home old me that I had a box on my head (I had not even seen it yet).

Then the door opened and some lady ordered the man in...

Yes mistress...the man said

A scary first day in SL...:)

Now I have my own business and help people all the time get going with their first house, land, etc...

your kidding you have someone just come in and NOSE around you HOUSE like it is a public place?

I kid you not, walked right into the living room. And let me make clear that my house looks like a house... in no way does it resemble a shop, mall, club or other such place.

Since that incident a nice fellow gave me some locking doors so it won't happen again.

Sometimes it's hard to tell what is "open to the public" and what is private land/buildings. As a month old n00b, I still sometimes end up in places that I shouldn't. For instance, if there is a private house on an open sim, how would I know? This is a serious question...I cannot tell.

I don't think anyone will hold an honest mistake against you. If you walk into a place then realize it's not public I think most people are perfectly happy if you just say "excuse me" and leave. What my intruder did was beyond the pale, not simply an accident.

Another rule of thumb I use is to look for signs & vending machines. Anyone who puts such things up is trying to attract attention and I think it's a safe bet it's a public area. The lack of such things makes me think twice before nosing around.

The rule of thumb I use when exploring is : if I can't get there by walking, flying, or using obviously public teleporters, then I assume I'm not meant to be there.

If I cannot open the main door of a building either by walking up to it or clicking it, I assume I'm not meant to go into that building.

If I cannot get a teleporter to work, I assume it's a private/restricted teleporter, and the area is probably private too.

I avoid simply teleporting to 'dots on the minimap' I use Search->Places, because the places listed in Search->Places are usually public, but 'dots on the minimap' may be in private locations.

Very helpful. Thank you.

Back to the "rude people" subject, I had an experience last night that left me simply scratching my head...

I was exploring with my SL friend and we were...errr, trying some things out ;-) Yes, it was in a technically public sim but in an enclosed box inside the sim. Next thing I know, this female av came in, undressed and started doing some very annoying things during what was a nice moment...but then wasn't. While it's obvious to me that if you really want privacy, then you get your own home, but really, when I accidently interrupt something that I perceive as private, I excuse myself and move on - usually with an apology.

I am pleased that most folks I have met in SL have been more respectful. I certainly try to be.

Sounds to me like another teenager on the grid...

You're right about buying a house by the way, and if all you want is some privacy it's not as hard/expensive as you may think. With a little patience you can find an affordable plot of "first land" and there are dozens of creators on the grid giving away houses, many of them quite nice, for free. And if you intend it to just be a place for you and a few special friends you can close off access to everyone outside of a specific list.

I haven't been playing all that long, but I became a big fan of home ownership pretty quickly.

When I am at a welcome center there is at least one person present who will answer questions and who won't rez large objects, fuglify their avatar, push others around, play stupid audio clips, dance with a cow or wear a strap-on. I may not be a pornstar barbie, but if nothing else I consider myself part of the good scenery :-) And I occasionally help, or at least provide conversation.

Getting a little leary of people who skillfully navigate to me and then play newbie, though. Fortunately most are bad actors and are easy to detect, but clearly one form of griefing is to try the patience of those who try to help.

Beyond Rude!
10-18-2006 19:19
Dearly Darlings,

I may be joining the ranks of those who are closing off their property to persons I don't know. My real Life sister came to play here and some horrid, rude, portly, naked South American Newbie shoved her around my home and fondled her avatar. Naturally his birthday is today. My home is in a PG sim. He understood fully what he was doing was not appreciated nor wanted. My sister speaks Spanish. There was no language issue. I am not amused. She did file an abuse report. I'm banning him. I'm hoping this is not the harbinger of things to come.

Ever Yours,

Mrs. Showdog Tiger

The reason, Earl, that so many people have those red keep out signs is too many people make the assumption that they can do whatever they want, whereever they want and sometimes the idea that they are on private property occur to them. Sometimes "Hi can I help you" or "This is private property" does not seem to sink in with some people, so hence the red keep out signs. They act as an electronic fence. You as a officer of the law can understand this cant you?

And "looking for land" on an already occupied area tends to mean that land is occupied and not for sale. :)

My partner and I both feel that if we are renting an area of land, a section of space if you will, that we should be allowed to manage it as we see fit. If we would like only family and friends on the property, are we not entitled? Sometimes we hold little get togethers and watch cartoons and movies, and we like to do so without strangers camera panning around our locked doors and intruding and thinking its his/her right to do so. Too many newbies (and a few oldies) feel it is thier right to do what they see fit. And then they wonder in the next instance why they were banned from that area.

For a business you wouldn't want it, but it sounds like an ideal place for a residence to me.

My house is basically free to everyone to enter. No signs no access or something like that. And I leave it the decentcy of people if they enter it or not.

But I do have a small device that logs people entering my house (one step inside my house triggers it).
When someone enters once, I assume the were curious after the decorating (which I see as an compliment) or they were just noisy.
People who return over and over, I send a IM asking why. If I get a rude answer, the banlist is one more entry richer.
But often you get very nice answers too, so those people stay welcome at my house... as long they respect my right on privacy and the rules of my house :).

to JW Hey You <3

to earl: it sounds like a residential area and not a buisness area, if you are looking for a residential area, be grateful your nieghbors have those up,or think of it as a nieghborhood watch;). if its a buisness location you are lookin for, then yes those no access walls are not attractive for buisness.
again, as my partner stated, to many newbies & a few oldies, seem to think that it is thier right to do what they wish when they wish where they wish, and some seem to think that when they see these electric fences up on private property, that it means THEY cant come onto the property, as if its a personal affront to them(we had to AR two people yesterday because they felt they could dump thier garbage onto out property, hence the fence,).

until people learn to respect others property, you are gonna run into a lot of those fences earl, get used to it. and im down with the locking of doors but as one tuckfard put it, all he had to do was a cam pan then click on the sit ball in our bedroom.

so much for lockin the door

I think the begging mentality comes in part from other games where there's such a profound class difference between old-timers and noobs.

Sure, a noob can spend four boring hours hunting Unassuming Minor Fluffies in the hills around the Noob Zone to earn a few taffeta pieces (TP).

But while you, the level 2,000,000 Armor Plated Space Harrier of Doom, were walking through the Dread Forest on your way to meet your friend in the Noob Zone, you probably accidentally stepped on a Giant Slavering Fluffy that was carrying a gem worth a few bajillion TP. But you need a bajillion-zillion TP for your new Sword of Spifftacularity, so anything worth only a bajillion is barely worth the space in your inventory.

So, yeah, why not spread the TP around to the noobs? Poverty stinks, and a bit of well-placed TP can wipe it clean until they grow up and learn to do it themselves.

Of course, SL doesn't work anything like that. It's nearly as hard for someone who's been here for years to make money as someone who's been here for twenty minutes, and you don't get a discount on buying L$ due to your age in world. But old habits die hard.

Oh yeah, and the other reason for all the begging is laziness, sheer laziness. ;-)

Hey how you get my stats man!!! and its 2,000,005. :P

That's the point I was trying to make. No one who actually belongs there ever walks to my house... either I TP them or I've given them a landmark. Anything that discourages random foot traffic from coming into my yard I see as a plus.

Please don't misunderstand and think I'm anti-social... far from it!!! But there are thousands of public buildings in SL where my friends and I can do public things, hang around and meet new people. Home is for privacy.

Oh just about everyone here makes a GREAT point! and I didn't even think of the Cam Pan till you can see in and teleport like that, but I guess only the troublemakers would think of that I guess.

If SL would just go to making everyone pay a small charge to be here we will always be stuck with the problem of A$$holes causing the fences to go up.

I hate seeing those all over.
When I am looking for just the right plot of land and i think i have found it, (one close to the main road) thats when I see the most fences.

They can't seal, they can't vandalize, they can't muss up your sheets or steal the change in your sofa cushions. "Locking" your property does nothing that a short return time doesn't do better to protect your property while you're away. While you're there, what you need is push restriction and a manual tp-home script, so if a troublemaker does show up, one casually typed phrase later *poof* no more troublemaker.

All else inconveniences your neighbors and passer-by for no gain.
