As Abraham Lincoln said in a rather different circumstance: "Those who llike this sort of thing will find this the sort of thing they like." Actually did you read them? The sex is actually more explicit in Conan the Barbarian than in the Gor Books. Theres lots of Slaves and Men HAVING sex in Gor books but the description of any act of sex is rather brief. Any Romance novel will use more verbage in one good sex scene than all the verbage of all the sex in "Slave Girl of Gor" (which is the book with the most sex in it - the girl literally has hundreds of partners) Most of the discusions and word explainations about sex are about how Masters and Slaves relate to each other - which helps explain I think why it apeals to a subset of the BDSM crowd. |

No one can be collared unless they consent to the roleplay. It's ridiculous to suggest otherwise. Some guy comes up to you and emotes collaring you - you can simply tp away, log off or ignore them (the first two being the most appropriate, since if you're there to stay it's because you want to be part of the roleplay). You are only looking at the "physical" aspects of it. Of COURSE they can logoff. Try looking at the mental aspects of it before and after and you just might understand a little more... |

You can say that about any close relationship in SL or RL either one. People grow attached, fall in love, get hurt, do stupid things, etc........... in both. Gor has no monopoly on these issues. _____________________

Well, once upon a time, those entries in the table of contents linked to other notecards that contained the text of the chapters. I suspect that Norman's publisher sic'd the IP Police on them. Anyway, as a result, recent arrivals to Gor usually only read whichever e-book they buy first. And, really, any one chosen at random is quite enough, inasmuch as RP Gor has a rather different (and possibly richer) back-story than the Norman books themselves. That is correct about the index being actual embedded books - with embedded chapters. The books at Teletus are complete. I cannot speak to other cities. Because of SL bug, you cannot click the book links in the notecards - you drag them out of the notecard to inventory. To quickly followup the full thread: Teletus market is safe zone - any and all welcome as long as you are OOC If In Character - then be in character - no safe zone when in character (full Role Play even on the docks when *in character* and you role play). Visitors welcome - don't care what you wear - human adults only - just put on an observer tag and wander the whole island. We are friendly and love to answer questions to those who politely inquire. If you wish to join Gor, we will even assign a mentor to you to help you along ![]() Good to read the rules you get on entry. The boat you land on is *always full safe zone* Yes, it is a bit more detailed than that - I am just giving a quick overview. Scribery contains all the books (complete) and many new user notecards (new Master, New Freewomen, New Slave, New to Gor in general and all that) I have no doubt most other city scriberies have the same. The point is this: all the naysayers have obviousely not actually researched or visited or questioned Gor from a Gorean. They just get all their 'facts' from other naysayers who *also* have no idea what they are talking about. "I hate Macintosh!" "Really? Why?" "I don't know. They just suck." "Have you ever used one?" "Nope. They just suck and I hate them" "In that case, maybe you'd better never give one a try" ![]() |

Don't be smakin' me Connolly. Watch it. A free woman owning slaves is perfectly acceptable in Gor - SL and the novels both - and is quite common in the novels. Norman remains mute on the statistics, but various critics have estimated that only about 5%-10% women in the Gor novels are actually slaves. Panther women are probably more likely to own slaves than FWs in SL-Gor, I'd think. |

One of the greatest things I enjoy about Second Life is the diversity of sub and counter cultural environments people have crafted for themselves, and others, to enjoy. If I wander into some new territory, I'm just as wary and careful as I would be in RL...only safe in the knowledge that whatever happens, I'll be able to tp out in an eyeblink - with only my boots up my *ss at the other end to pay for it. I don't like vampires. I think they're boring, filled with self-absorbed angst, and generally a bit tiresome in their soap-operish drama. But I still like to occasionally visit vamp sims because the gothic architecture is kinda cool...and hey, what's there NOT to like about rivers and fountains of blood? *laugh* I even have *gasp* friends who are mostly-immortal, bloodsucking, black-clad figures who pose meaningfully in the shadows with their glittering red eyes. I could go on for DAYS about what I think about the psychological componentry that drives someone to imagine such a Second Life experience...but why? They ENJOY themselves. They have fun. The bite...and get bitten...and people burst into flames...and others are turned into thrall-like vessels to do another's ebil bidding...yadda yadda yadda. Vamps, Goreans, Werewolves, Furries, Dragons...and yes everyone on SL is living in a consensual fantasy. If you don't like theirs...don't GO there...but when someone asks for a bit of advice on how to enter such a place...respectfully, and curiously, feel free to warn them...but if you want to spout your half-baked freudian analysis of their kink...perhaps you can start another thread? Passing judgement on someone else's predilections only indicates that anything that doesn't make sense to you, is somehow worthless to everyone. Which is, most obviously, not the case. Excellent post, Archer! *smiles* |

That's not slavery, that's sex-play. Calling this sort of behaviour slavery is an insult to those who have died, and those who still live, in enslavement. Indeed. And people wonder why I react badly when someone says slavery is natural and good and to be embraced. Anyone who is weak willed enough to be brow-beaten over the internet into doing something they don't want to doesn't deserve to live anyway and would be doing the human race a favour by slitting their wrists. That's the most Gorean thing anyone's said all thread. Well done! That catagorical failure of empathy, that disdain for fellow humans. Classic! You can say that about any close relationship in SL or RL either one. People grow attached, fall in love, get hurt, do stupid things, etc........... in both. Gor has no monopoly on these issues. However, Gor does go on and on about things that help maintain abusive relationships. "Oh, if only I had been pleasing enough, he would never have hit me." Where have I heard that one before? _____________________

And how many abusive relationships exist between people who have mever even heard of Gor? Many, but that doesn't mean selling slavery as romantic doesn't potentially have very negative effects. _____________________

Many, but that doesn't mean selling slavery as romantic doesn't potentially have very negative effects. It is not slavery, it is acting. It is escape. For all you know the people playing the slaves in SL are in RL strong willed powerful people. For some the feeling of giving another control, especially if you are always in control normally, is very stimulating. _____________________

Whilst I acknowledge a person's right to live as they choose within the law of their country, I have to say that I find the idea of any kind of slavery deeply abhorent. Angel you raise a number of points, and I would address a couple. You have stated that two of your 'girls' were school dropouts, one with a serious drink problem, and that another had an eating disorder. Now I applaud that you have encouraged them back into education and away from self-harm, but are we to believe that these girls were in any way fit to make a decision to become a 'slave'? I am very aware that these girls were presenting with symptoms of very low self esteem. Becoming a 'slave' for whatever purposes will not help them. A better course of action would have been to befriend them without the slavery motif, if your intentions are purely philanthropic. Okay, Firstly, I never said my Girls were drop Outs. One had Top marks and a scholarship, But RL conditions were Interfering with her ability to Use it. I found the solution to her situation and it allowed her to Fulfill All of her obligations while Still taking advantage of her scholastic opportunities. The second, Also a Grad had taken Post Secondary courses, that did, as they occasionally do, Turn out to be Not as usefull as Advertised and her Life had fallen into a Rut. What She Needed was a Good sound Kick in the pants to Pull out of her Rut and Go Back for something More useful. She has done so, and is on the way to becoming a chef. As to one with a serious drink(ing) problem" I said She was engaged in (IMO) destructive drinking. She was Getting Drunk More than twice a month, and given her other life issues, i considered this Unhealthy, and restricted her drink to One Glass of red wine Per day, with dinner for health purposes. many of you would think Nothing of Going out once a Week and Getting drunk, I on the other hand Disapprove of the practice of Getting drunk At All. I'm no Hypocryte, i Freely admit Having been "Three sheets to the Wind" Myself Twice this year. After the second time, i've gotten a grip on Myself, and it's unlikely i shall do so again in the foreseeable future. You may think Little of her drinking, but she belongs to me, and it's MY opinion that matters. She wasn't happy about it at first, But she sees the wisdom of it Now, and sticks to it religiously. The Young Lady with the eating Disorder, Now That you can Blame on The Free society we all live in that tells every Little Girl that everyone will hate you and treat you as an Obscene freak If you happen to weigh anything More than Ten Pounds Under your ideal body weight. She was Attending therapy for it, and it was at times hard for her Not to view food as the enemy, and Even harder to accept that someone could love her for Her, not her dress size. So, while the Rest of society was hammering her with the Idea that she was a grotesque, Her RL partner, And Myself were showing her that she had REAL value as a Human being, I was letting her know she Wouldn't be abandoned If she wasn't some sort of Advertisers Ideal of what a Woman Should be. If surrenduring Some Control in her life made her recovery easier, then i would say it was a H*ll of a Lot better than being Free, and Dead. (Pardon my temper here, But I Did love that Girl, and it makes me Furious that she was Just one of So many who Suffer as she does) My girls, All of them are Highly intelligent, Well read, and strong Willed people. I take only the best for Myself. The One other thing they All share in their personalities is a generosity of Spirit and that comes out in Wishing to Put someone elses needs, and desires ahead of their own. maybe they just got Tired of all the selfishness in their lives, and Seek something Better. In Your Opinion, I would have been better Just being a Friend to these Girls, But you failed to Understand that these girls DO have friends, and family, and Support units in their Lives. They have Education, and jobs, and If all they needed was another friend then they wouldn't be Exploring this Lifestyle at all. What they needed in their Lives was an Anchor. Something MORE than friends, and Family, School, or Work could provide them. They Wanted someone to tell them "You can be ANYTHING in this life that you want to be And I'm Not Going to Let you Settle for Anything Less than the Best Because You are Worth It!". If Traditional roles worked, Filled that need, gave them the reassurances they wanted they would be in them. Everybody Finds their personal Compass in a Different way. Family, work, religion, volenterring, sports, hobbies, The Find Something that They feel is that one solid constant thing in their Lives. And some people Find it in Serving. Also you say that another of your girls has disclosed her 'slave status' to her mother? Very worrying indeed that you say that her mother has accepted this and condones it. As a mother myself I would never condone such behaviour (no, I'm not saying that my kids as adults might not enjoy a bit of saucy sex play!! - but I will not need to know about it!) But slavery? No way, and I'd have the cult deprogrammers in like Flynn to sort it out. Anyone who has children and disagrees, try imagining your child telling you, 'Mummy, I'm his/her slave, and I'm so happy about it. It's really fulfilled me'. My daughter's 14 and I'd move Heaven and Earth never to hear that. Her mother WAS worried, and More than a Little intimidated at the prospect of Meeting me. Like you she suffered from Groundless Preconceptions about what this lifestyle Is. She and i spoke, and we Discussed her fears. I answered her fully, I Hid nothing of our relationship. She is My Girls Mother and is entitled to have the truth. Unlike you, It seems her Mind was Open enough to Hear what i was saying, and See for herself How the observable Facts Confirmed what she was being told. Her daughter was Closer to Home, Going back to school, and was happier, and more self confident than she had been in Years, and it Wasn't due to Blind acceptance My Girl was TAUGHT to Question Authority BY ME. Her Mother Saw that her daughter was not just a Sex toy, That Sex actually had little or nothing directly to do with what we were Acheiving. She Saw her daughter Finding Focus with Someone who Cared about her. The questions she asked Were hard Ones, in the way any Mother would approach it. My answers while not always Easy to hear (What mother likes to hear that another can Discipline her child in a way she can't?), at least satisfied her that her daughter was Loved, and cared for. This wasn't all in a one hour interview. her mother is welcome in my home any time, and we have Visitied her as well. There hasn't been any seperation, No reluctance on My part to have my girl go to her Mother at any time. Your daughter Is 14, and i Also hope she doesn't Come to you and say she has found our lifestyle. 14 is too young. What i Do hope for you, and your daughter is that she will grow up , and be ALLOWED to grow up to Make her own decisions on what to do with her life and she need Never fear that she will be doing so Without the full support, and Unconditional love trust and acceptance of the Most Important person in her life. Her Mother. I hope before you did anything as Drastic as deprogrammers, or having them Committed or whatever you Might actually take a moment to LISTEN to your child. Radical idea in this day and Age, but it's been known to work. As for your comments on historical Slavery,,I've said it before, I'll say it again Our lifestyle Shares Some vocabulary with the traditional Concept of Slavery, But apart from that, it's Comparing apples to Cadillacs. They are two completely different things. Angel. |

I thank all of the Gorean and RL "consensual" slavery people for making the case why Gor and related _extreme_ elements of BDSM are so harmful, and why they should be banned from SL.
I doubt LL will tolerate such types once they get wind of how such people are using SL as a recruitment/indoctrination tool for RL "consensual" slavery. |

My thoughts from my little travels-
For anyone planning a trip to GOR, I would recommend that you include Midgaard in your travels. The buildings are impressive and the garden by the sea is beautiful. I don’t think it would be as easy to criticize after a visit. ~Sommerland~ |

The most terrible, awful and onerous burden that comes with accepting freedom is the responsibility you accept to allow others the same freedoms you enjoy. You have every right to complain, warn, and think as you will...but the very moment you move to restrict another's freedom on the grounds they're doing something you simply think distasteful or stupid...congratulations, you've moved from freedom to fascism.
