Gee do you really think we'll lose 40% of the population if they ban sex? I doubt it

Yes but when they ban combat and non-standard AV 's too, watch us all pack up, sell our land, close our stores & desert our rental agreements, but just think how wonderfull it will be when there are more sims online than residents :P

Are you kidding me? The only reason to buy a home in SL is to do what comes naturally in private. Everything else you can do without owning land. That would most definitely hurt the real estate market, because there isn't enough creativity and talent to fill up as many sims as are out there. What's the point? I think the point is revealing the abject stupidity of trying to stop human nature.

I actually did shake my head at the narrow-mindedness of thinking the sole reason to acquire a private home would be for the sole purpose of pixel-humping.

What about having a place for scripting and designing afar from a cluttered/lagged/griefed/regularly down sandbox? Creating items without a n00b trudging in and asking what you're doing? A place where you can set a landmark and call 'home', add an audio/video stream to it? Meet friends, and I mean 'meet' and not 'jump their bones'?

Really, I can't deside wether I should pity this lack of imagination outside the XXX-box or not.

So you can create your own little world without buying / renting land or having it wiped daily? tried building stuff with replicating penis's and batcubes surrounding you or whilst being orbited lately?

I've had people rent land just to have their own little place where they can practice building, it wasn't a long term deal but people rent for reasons other than a bit of naughtiness.

Hmm, I bought land in SL for building, primarily. We also purchased another, larger plot of land, to build a "home" on. Yes, certain things do happen in that home, but it's original design was simply to be a virtual house, all of our own, which we could decorate. I have a yard where I can also build, or do whatever. It's not all about doing "what comes natural." It's also about having fun ;)

Adding a bit of clarification; I love sandboxes. I think they are great fun.

NOT for building though. Usually for experimenting with different things, but mostly for playing. Too much of a headache to go to most sandboxes and try to build. I much prefer to build in private, where I don't have to worry about someone trying to mess me up by orbiting me or doing something to my build, or having to worry about autoreturn.

That's the sort of figures I've seen being thrown around but hey say if it's less, you still have the knock on effect that those who are involved in sex do rent land, they do buy clothing, furniture, art, tattoos, jewellery yadda yadda.

Business will suffer if the draconian measures some are calling for arrive.

Short term maybe, but not long term necessarily.

People will branch out into new areas and discover markets that are not tapped yet.

People will find new things to do.

People will always shop anyway.

The L$ rate changes, more people might buy money as it's affordable.

Land prices may come down as people quit, so those that have been wanting land but could never afford it can suddenly buy it.

Less people around might mean that those who are here for other things benefit from less lag.

There are always benefits to be found, whichever way you choose to look at it.

Yes, you will be able to buy land for $2k and pay $4k a month in council rates (tier) on it.
Life will be wonderfully lag free too when there are more sims online than residents.

While I'm not against sex being allowed in SL (I think it should be) - if the whole world becomes more and more full of explicit material, judging by the divided opinions on these boards, it is likely to put off as many people from joining as it attracts!

So there is a commercial factor - will big corporations be put off coming into SL if it is seen as just a place for pixel sex?

As SL grows in the awareness of the worldwide general public, it needs to avoid getting the reputation for just being a place for avatars to have pixel sex.

a) are you some kind of Ferengi? Profit & Commerce is more fun than sex...?

b) If you think it's a "gay" problem, you need to go more places. SL is about the LEAST gay place on the net I have yet seen.

Plus people would be frustrated from lack of sex..it could be chaos..dogs and cats sleeping together...Mass hysteria

again bringing up yiffing?

Hun, I told you it was only a few times. A long time before I met you.

Supply and demand issue, less people demanding, less suppliers, less choice.

That's an economy in recession, not really a good thing at all.

Quite honestly if you spend your time having sex frequently or all the time, your really missing out on the most unique and interesting features of SL, commerce and profit.

You stated earlier that if you chose rarely that means you dont have sex anymore - this is not necessarily true but you cant tell us that without recanting and still have it both ways.

So basically,
..since you decided for everyone earlier those in the rarely column no longer have sex
..after they voted - neat trick

Then that means you have decided anyone having sex at all is missing out on commerce and proffit.

Of course if sex was removed from the game - you would hear the "giant sucking sounds" of a lot of people selling off their land and leaving SL.

There would only be a portion of the economy left, and many content creators could no longer afford their teir.

Careful, your Bias is showing again.

You alread decided the direction SL was heading then interpreted the results of your poll to support your view.

Id like to know where Phil R said that. Id also like to know how people think removing all the Dollars spent on sex in the SL economy isnt going to hurt every single business. Including yours.

There wont be enough money to make having a SL trade worthwhile. Sample 100 random filled out profiles of. see how many people are in SL relationships.

You are simply being unrealistic.

The real message behind the Blog Post is:

Dan Linden shouldnt be allowed to post on the blog.

He cant seem to do so without neglecting current policy, and never explains newly cuased disconnects.

Wether its sex violence or religion ..my personal hate is shout function someone will find anything offensive.

But most offensive is one person telling another what to do what to think..thats RL not SL.

Hard maybe to avoid what you dont like but it is possible.

Thats the best way not impose one group view on another .

Otherwise could delete everything especially pink slippers and political adverts they are much more revolting to me.

live together when you can avoid when you cant.

Im simply not clever enough to believe im right or have any right to tell others what to do.

The reason SL works is all about suspension of disbelief.

When you go to the movies, you sit in your seat knowing that the people you see on screen are actors, getting paid for acting a part, that behind the camera is a director, that a writer has written the words they are saying, and there is no orchestra behind the bush, that's a soundtrack. You can still cry, laugh, be shocked, be terrified, you feel your heart pound, you root for the hero, you weep for the victim... You suspend your disbelief, and enter into the story.

You do this willingly. You even pay for it. It feels good.

SL is simply another form of suspension of disbelief. It feels good. You do the things in SL that feel good.

I buy a dress because it feels good to have my avatar wear a nice dress. I have a home because it feels good to have a home.

Sex on SL is the same. The brain is the most effective erogenous zone. If your mind isnt engaged in real life sex, the fingers wont do a bit of good, no matter how skilled you are with them. If your mind isnt engaged in SL sex then pixels on the screen wont turn you on. ITs not about fingers on a keyboard. None of it is about that. If it was, i might as well sit here typing out the telephone directory.

SL is about the mind, and the effect it has on the person looking at it. That is why we are all here, and why SL works. If it didnt feel good, we wouldnt do it.

I can choose to suspend my disbelief. I dont have to look at anything i dont want to, and if i see it, i dont have to let my brain engage. I am a grownup. Its a long time since i hid behind the sofa from the Daleks.

OMG Imogen you took the words right out of my mouth with that one. Sure wish more guys in real life understood that the real sex takes place before clothes even come off : )

I really don't know what to think about all of this. I mean I really don't have a problem admitting that I share intimacy with my partner in SL. And frequently. I don't feel the need to justify it by talking about how safe it is compared to RL or anything either. It's no different than doing the same thing over a phone with a partner to me, and I think it's kinda ridiculous that the same people who complain about sex in SL are making shows like Desperate Housewives and Queer As Folk #1 shows in RL with their avid viewership.

People used to streak through business gatherings and public speeches in RL too. Hasn't stopped any commerce. You want to hold a business meeting? Turn off Object Entry on your parcel, put up a security orb, make the guests RSVP and orbit anybody not on the guest list. Just like in RL. No more prim penises flying through the bi-annual pocket protector convention.

As far as children are concerned, I just wonder when people are going to figure this out? Sticking my daughter's head in the sand and making sex a mystery is going to backfire, just like it's been doing with alcohol sex and drugs for generations. People make better decisions with understanding - children too. If the naked human form wasn't so damned 'taboo', there would be no thrill in flying prim parts of it around creating shock value. End of problem from here...

Heh.. I don't do SL Sex. I am married my husband plays SL as well, so why go for pixels when one could be having real contact wit the loved one. I think I cybered in total 3 or 4 times in my life.. when I was a good bit younger.. it was always awkward and not even remotely interesting. Pixels just don't get me worked up I fear.
And now that i am married I would not even dare to waste a thought on anyone but my husband.. that would be pretty sad.
I am in SL for many things Sex has never been one of them.

I have never had sex in SL... or in RL... nor do I look at myself in the mirror... I am still a virgin and am still pure as the driven snow... never an indecent thought is allowed in my head. I go to church 3 times a week and always obey others opinions of what is right or wrong.
So I am the bestest and mostest Politically Correct AH here.
Having said this.... I have some beach front property in Arizona to sale you.

Sex in SL is the safest sex in the world and has better visual effects then a 1-900 number.
Its Fun, Its funny, its a blast running and playing with friends. and its better then RL sex because I can fantasies ANYTHING. And with the right Partner It can get VERY REAL.
Its not as real as Real Life.. but then I don't need the Drama.. if your a drama hog then go for it.. Real Life sex is for Procreation.
Loving, Compassion, Caring, Exciting, Romantic, Adventure, Intamance is all a Mental state and can be performed in Virtual life as well as in Real Life.

If you say my Real Life is sad?
I say your Virtual life is sad.
After all this Virtual life is what is in Question here. Not my Real Life. That part, is none of your business.

Now on another note... No one likes griefers.. however they are a fact of life.
But there are all kinds of griefers.
From those ediots that want to bust into your private homes and expose themselves to you.
To those adversaries wanting to brag that they are better then you and you should live up to their standards.

in SL I love to Fantasies. One day I am Male.... the next Female.... the next I may wish to be a Shemale......Whatever I decide to do for that day....ITS NOT REAL... ITS FANTASY ROLE PLAYING.
And yes I have those spurts of building and scripting and selling products.
I Fully use SL for my entertainment.

If you have tried Sex in SL and was not that happy with the results.... its just like real life....some partners are just better then others. and yes I would say 60% in SL are no Good at it... but then again the other 40% can be a blast.

I have my Likes and dislikes also..... but I seem to just avoid my dislikes and hunt for my likes.... and just disregard and allow those others to just do their thing and leave me alone.

IT is sad when the Puritan Prudes, disrupt my enjoyment just because they think I should live up to their standards

It's always been somewhat surprising to me how many people have such strongly negative views about "cybersex" or, as I like to refer to it, "textual sex". I suppose some degree of that surprise is itself misplaced, given how controversial the topic of sexuality is in our culture in general. But it seems to me that it goes very much without saying that when you place people in a virtual universe where they are free to do more or less what they wish without adverse consequences or social constraints, of course one of the main areas in which this will play itself out is sex, given the centrality of sex to life. It would be extremely surprising if such a virtual world were to have less sex than we see in SL, and in fact I would wager that this would not be possible unless there were more authoritarian constraints put into place restricting behaviors.

But beyond the issue of appropriateness, the negativity often seems directed at "how can be people be turned on by pixels" -- a sentiment that is understandable, but completely beside the point. Of course it isn't the pixels that are the focus, it's the words. Textual sex appeals to the brain, which is the main sex organ, the source of our arousal, and the place where our fantasies are born and are played out. To me, that's the main reason why textual sex appeals to so many people -- it interacts directly with their brains, and that interaction can lead to arousal and excitement on a level that is rather independent from the pixelated images. So while I would agree that "cybersex" which is focused on pixels with mundane or uninspired text seems pointless (to me personally), what I consider to be "properly done" textual sex has a great degree of appeal precisely because it addresses directly the mental aspects of sexual arousal and fantasization. That's why it works well for many people, both in SL and elsewhere. While I agree that it is no substitute for a healthy sexual and emotional life in our first lives, that doesn't at all mean that, in itself, it is silly, pointless or pathetic. That kind of reasoning applies to everything on the internet -- and if it were true, we should all turn off our computers tomorrow and stop wasting time having virtual conversations, building virtual artworks and buildings, and so forth, because it's "pathetic" that we aren't spending the time doing these things in our first lives that we do in SL -- a notion that, in other words, kills the whole idea of the virtual world.

I do have sex in SL, but I do a lot of other things, too. I don't like the poll categories (how can you possibly expect someone to answer honestly whether they have an addiction, for example), but I see sex in SL as a natural outgrowth of relationships that grow and develop in that world, and see no need to artificially expunge that element from my complete interaction with the world.

I hereby add that at this time I have little choice save to admit that my SL sex frequency has increased slightly to "Endless". Up from last week's 'A lot' and far better than last month's 'enough to keep things interesting'.
