Calling on mere tourists, users, consumers, players etc. to boycott MJW

Basically, she is saying we have money invested here, we have businesses here, and it needs to be more real-world to support those businesses - we need to have a say in decisions that affect those businesses.

Ok. But her statement was two part. What you describe here was the first part of her statement. How do you see what she said next? When she says: "..More like you and in contrast to e.g. merely tourists, users, consumers, players etc."

I agree with the boycott and will begin a suspension of trade with the creators of the group in question.

I would, but I dont think I've ever dealt with any of them or am ever likely to. So you wouldn't really tell if I were boycotting them or not.

But please, you make it sound like what land barons is doing is good for some reason? But everytime I look at what is going on, I cannot find anything particulary 'good' about it. It seems to me that the consumer some how gets screwed in the end.

To me the concept of how land barons work on Secondlife does not fulfill creativity or innovation, which is really the ideal you could say of Secondlife.

However, please, show me evidence that my views are wrong. I'm a logical person. I do change my opinions about things. I do make mistakes about my conceptions of things.

I can help you with Anshe's previous insights into this.

From: Anshe Chung

If tomorrow my "land baron" friends and I would leave SL, release our land to Linden Labs and let it revert back to auction, you would not see any new land added to Second Life for at least one month, maybe event two months, since that would be about the time it would take for Linden Labs to find new buyer to pay for all those servers.

Mmmm, this sound arrogant? Well, I did not want bring this up, but you push me. We "land barons" have a great deal to do with the fact that so many people can play this game for free or almost for free.

All I can say, April, is I'm not a big land owner either, or a rich AV, or anything else like that, and my input is not valued less.

I have a stake in the game, too.

When someone says their opinions and demands count for more, then that means others are automatically less.

This is requestiing favoritism. I thought you were against favoritism. Or is it only when it's directed at certain people?

I can't see you sticking up for them when they've basically said we are the "little people".

OK, yes. For the viewing audience, this is the problem right here. People think what Anshe does is a crime. It's not physical content so it must not be good.

Hmmm... perhaps it would be pertinent to point out at this juncture that NONE of what is sold in SL is "physical content." It's all just bits and bytes that produce pixels on a screen. Sex balls? Cars? Airplanes? Guns? Shoes? Clothes? Hair? NONE of these are a physical item. Therefore, by the argument presented by some against Anshe, all of these things should be considered "a crime against SL."

Oh, except for one thing... information in a newspaper is the same in SL as it is in RL. So I guess we at the Messenger and other papers like us are really the only ones in SL selling a legitimate product. How interesting. And we don't even charge for the paper.

Perhaps we should start charging the elite L$100 an issue, while the unwashed masses get it for free. :D

Err.. Why are you taking what was said out of context?

Please reread my posts again. I never stated anything about "physical content" and yet you quote me saying "a crime against SL.", when infact I did say "in a sense" too, please don't take what I say out of context. It's like putting words in someone else's mouth.

oh come on. It's been nearly an hour since I laid the bait and no one has taken it!! Do I really have to spell it out for you? Sheesh. I didn't pick that one quote out of oh so many for you guys not to take advantage of my generous offer!

Oh ok. If you want something doing...

Don't you see? Anshe CREATED the 'tourist' culture in SL. She enabled them to play through her land barony. As such, she IS better than the rest - hell, they're only here because of her! So don't lynch the creator just because she points out she's superior to you!

Of course, you could also say that if she created the culture, then equally these 'tourists' put her where she is today with their cash and support as she stepped on them on the way up, so it is perhaps ever so slightly mercenary and cold to appear to now want to exclude them and demand special status and consideration over and above these underlings. :p

But don't mind me - I'm just driven by jealousy.

And trolling, as always, of course. :)

Kris, i'm confused and I don't know what T-shirt to wear because of it. Maybe you can help me out. Am I a "Content Facist" or a "Tourist"? Or am I just pernicious?

Yes Chip is right and this is exactly my point as well. I mean come on the whole chat log put s it all in front of us. How it was "tried" to be veiled with the greater good, when the motives are so clear.

The shot made me laugh Cindy, good one :)
I dont know.

I am reading all the same material, all the same posts as you and as Chip and I dont see anythign "veiled" or even that interesting. I have little interest in this group (or promoting it) and most of their agenda items are a waste of time IMO, but.... I dont see any conspiracy.

The trouble with seeing "veiled" references, is that they are actually inferences on your part. For instance in your rabid attention to this issue and in all your posts on this thread, *I* see a "veiled" personal attack. I dont feel that any of this response would be happening if it were not Anshe Chung in particular as a officer in the group.

Well, perhaps if she left it, we would all focus on Prok?

I notice that everyone on this thread is also talking about this as an issue relating to Anshe "thinking because she has more money that she has more right to Philips ear". Whereas everything relating to the group or the meeting that took place clearly mentions "creative" stakeholders, and folks that could be considered stakeholders merely because they "care" so much about SL (or just because they have joined the group). Everyone is conveniently not talking about that. :)

I would argue that the definition of "stakeholder" as presented in that meeting, covers every single person on this forum for instance, given that we are a small percentage of the total population that "cares more" and had more invested (emotionaly, financially etc), in the game.

I don't understand what land barons did to make the game free and/or almost free?

I mean, they're buying land from Lindenlabs, and selling it to users. How does this make the game free and/or almost free?

Not to speak for Anshe, but I'm pretty sure what she was getting at is that people who pay land tier (thereby helping LL pay their bills) subsidize basic accounts which cost LL more in bandwidth than they bring in from the one time fee. Pointing that out makes people uncomfortable, but It's not a value judgement. It's a simple statement of fact.

Having said that, I personally don't have any specific sense of entitlement when it comes to LL's policy or feature decisions and so feel no compulsion to lobby them for some kind of assurances. I feel that I am a customer and investor in something that I accept is high risk. I don't feel the need to project any aversion I might have to that risk on to Linden Lab in the form of any expectation that they should treat me as a dependent rather than a free agent who signed on to go along for the ride.

Hmm, while this does make some sense, 'land barons' are making a profit from obtaining and selling the land, one has to wonder if this really does effect Lindenlabs on the scale that I think Anshe Chung implied (Enough to give free and/or almost free access to SL)?

Additionally if people wern't willing to obtain the land in the first place, 'land barons' wouldn't be making any money. Would anyone happen to have any figures to suggest that 'land barons' are infact *that* benefical to Lindenlabs? Or even possibly a theory with theoretical numbers to suggest that Lindenlabs really does benefit enough from this to justify the concept of being a 'land baron' as something good for Secondlife?

Knowing how Anshe has done business in the past, if she doesn't get assurances of her continued monthly income from purchasing/reselling and renting land, I would take her threat seriously to simply return the land to the Linden's and walk out while she still has a profit. She is scared seeing what happened to GOM. Having invested so much into a "game" with no partnership, I can see her reasonings for such.

King Philip will have a lot of work to do at that point. The fact that she has mentioned it in another thread is inticing.

Anyone want to create a pool stating what month this will happen if the King doesn't come to her bedside and give in to her demands?

Ok, time to use my fav website www.dictionary.com to decide what Anshe was really saying! yay! All my commentary in {} is provided by the actual entries for these words from dictionary.com. I used the best judgment based upon context for the meanings. This is plain english as it is defined properly. The dictionary is wonderful to help in figuring out what someone said or what to say to someone. I once told someone no and they actually asked me what do I mean by no, so I looked it up, really made them mad. I am going to do this a bit at a time due to how much info to weed through for one short phrase like this one. You are free to use dictionary.com to perhaps work it in better for the context. IMHO, it is an elitist {The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources.} statement based upon the actual dictionary meanings for the words I outlined thus far. Please note, all comments in {} are from dictionary.com.

Anshe Chung: This is what we feel makes us stakeholders. More like you [Lindens] and in contrast to e.g. merely tourists, users, consumers, players etc. Let us evaluate this using plain english as defined by what we call dictionaries.

This {Used to refer to the present event, action, or time} is what{Which one or ones of several or many} we {Used by the speaker or writer to indicate the speaker or writer along with another or others as the subject} feel {To be emotionally affected by} makes {To cause to assume a specified function or role} us stakeholders { One who has a share or an interest, as in an enterprise.}

Please feel free to flame{To make insulting criticisms or remarks, as on a computer network, to incite anger.} away at me as I was prepared for this fate the minuite I decided to write this reply. If this does violate any TOS since I used dictionary.com, please let me know, I could not find that anywhere.

edit due to my lack of spelling my fav wesite properly and for spelling TOS as TSO , I am a tool.

I also have one more tidbit to add along to the stakeholder part, does LL have stock options available to the public? Can we actually buy into their operation and actually become stakeholders with an interest in how the company performs a whole?? If not, then paying the subscription fees along with land tier fees are the same as paying your local cable company for their service. You can get basic for $10, get premium for an additional $30 or get all the pay-per-views and pron flicks you want for $1,000 a month, you don't gain any interest in them for paying for their services (Ohio residents that use TW will understand where I am coming from on this one lol) . Since there are no stock options, or other forms to buy into LL, then it is impossible to become a stakeholder. In all it's essence, you either like SL or you don't, it is an at will setup. They can terminate your account, you can end your useage of their services, plain and simple. I think that is the basic intention of the group as a whole, since LL is portraying SL as an alternative world, WE all need representation on how LL handles policy, allow ALL OF US to have an interest in the company as a whole to make sure it stays alive. And in my posting using dictionary.com, I was not trying to poke fun at anyone for bad language skills, I was taught to say what you mean and mean what you say, I was simply pointing out the meainings of the words and why they caused a mood shift in the population of SL. As I intend on being a resident here, I do want say in how LL handles situations, not because I pay money but because this has got to be the most innovative world I have ever seen and has so much potential for growth. In other worlds, most are just games, you go in, you kill, you gain XP and gold, kill more and that is it, only satisfies the killer and hunter in me. This world satisfies that and more for me, I can goto a combat sim and shoot/be shot, I can explore my creative side with my builds, I can see the true creative nature of those around me, I can meet people I would never have met in RL, people from across the country and even the world! I want SL to grow and thrive but I beleive in order to do that, the residents here need to help out in the directions LL is going to take with it because it affects all of us, not just those with money or land. It even affects the tourist players per say, My wife tried SL out and hated it after a few weeks but she pre-paid the account for a year but never logged back in. She would be considered a tourist under some of the comments made. I pretty much stayed out as well and due to RL issues just let my AV sit waiting for me to return to this world, I was a tourist then too. But, several months ago, we were like, "hey, look, what is this SL that is installed on my computer?" So we logged in and found that it has changed and we feel in love with it, now we are logged on as much as possible, she owns 1/4 of a sim on my CC lol, she has a furniture store that is actually doing something, I am building aircraft and such and loving it, heck the land we/she owns was purchased from Anshe. What would happen to those tourists who hate it then love it if SL would just die today? Try log back in because a buddy in world told them that changes were made that made it awesome....only to find out LL has shut it's doors. Imagine all of the lost revenue to all of the residents who may have sold something, including land barons, content creators, scripters and service providers for events and such, for all you know, that noob tourist was Donald Trump, wanting to buy YOUR invention for the RL.
So lets just stop this stupid infighting and act like the adults we think we are. Just drop the groups, it just creates the political splits like RL, democrat vs republican. If LL wants to help facilitate communication then how about this thought?
a whole new forum area thinggy just for this type of interfacing between residents and LL.

A Linden Provided all public access area for all residents to come and vent, chat, leave suggestions aboout SL's future. Different from a town hall, this is specifically for this purpose.
To assist in Residents who are not either able to login or other reasons, do the thing with the chat transcripts. Have LL post em but also allow residents to post copies just so there is a check and balance so none are altered to express certian viewpoints.

and most importantly, we need to stop acting like whining children who are afraid of the mention of change. We got to get used to it, life is change. Either adapt or fall to the wayside. In acting like adults, we can facilitate the changes we all want to see happen. Honestly, it may even be possible that with any change, SL will improve. I have seen that in life, your altitude is determined by your attitude.
