Ridiculous
05-13-2005 21:28
I've not been a member more than a month. For the first two weeks, when I hit the connect button, guess what happened? I connected. Now when I click the connect button, for the past 6 hours (off and on) I get nothing, booted back to the login screen. It's so frustrating that I'm thinking of leaving SL. I have met quite a few cool people here, but if this is how it's going to be then what is the point of investing time, energy and money into this system.

Couldn't agree more. Those of us with some relevant s/w background know that SL isn't a particularly sophisticated piece of software, either on the client or server end. There are plenty of open source projects around that could be used together to build a better SL - perhaps even a P2P one. (e.g. OpenSceneGraph, ODE, MySql, Apache, reliable multicast messaging, etc. etc. etc.) Who has the time? Well we got two people. Who else is in? ![]() |

Hi Yiffy,
OK so maybe its not my computer then.... I have been getting the lag storm problem too (when I can log in lol). I just bought a new computer, and was testing it out in SL - and I was getting lag storms where I either cant move at all, or if I was moving, my AV just keeps on going and going going.... and generally doing its energizer bunny thing... ![]() I thought it was the new PC but maybe not. Was frantically trying to think of things to try tweaking on it to fix this. But cant log in at all now, so who knows..... I love SL - but my oh my the bugs, lack of decent support (I know they are overworked and I DO sympathise - but still...) is getting extremely hard to put up with. Great game, but more frustration than its worth lately. 1.6.x may have funky new features, but I have had NOTHING but problems since they upgraded..... (Not that 1.4.x -> 1.5.x were perfect, but I never had anything like this amount of problems with them). |

NO Preview

has anyone been able to log on with the preview version yet? just wonderd if it was me or not because its not accepting accounts at all Same problem as *standard version* -- SUXXX ![]() I'm sorry and embarrassed that I recommended SL to my friends. Makes me feel like an idiot. To think that people are paying hundreds of US$ to use this software is kind of unsettling. I need to get back to my RL. Lets see what the compensation will be for our loss of service. ![]() _____________________

just a note
05-13-2005 21:52
i understand people's frustration about the login situation. I'm annoyed myself.
But there seems to be so much seething animosity for the Lindens... why? There's always some snarky comment about "Seems like (some minor bug fix) pales in comparison to (problem currently annoying the poster) and they should have fixed that instead!!" Something tells me that the people who post this sort of invective have never worked in software. You have a team of bright people, all working on various parts of the system, and releases are when you get to put fixes in. Hard problems take longer. Would you rather *not* have the fixes that *have* been done, just because some harder problems haven't been fixed yet? If you think that some Head Honcho™ should corrall all the developers into a room and flog them until one particular defect is resolved, then you just don't get it. That's not the way problems are solved. Developers are not some interchangeble unit that you can throw more of at a problem to make it get done faster. In fact, quite the opposite. You put too many poeple on a software problem and it gums up the works, too many cooks in the kitchen. We all know that Linden Labs is in business to make money, but as far as corps like that go it's pretty freakin' *close* to altruistic, combiined with our community. You've got a bunch of creative people, Lindens or not, who share a vision of doing this really cool thing with a 3D environment. They're not the Empire, folks, they're not out to rip anybody off. There's no secret agenda to bilk the masses. It's just a bunch of people working together to do some neat stuff, and as a side note Linden Labs has money to pay some developers and other people to do that stuff. Many in the user community make money as well, and many more just have fun doing cool stuff. The system gets progressively better with time. Sure, some things don't work as well as people would like, and sometimes things are out and out busted. But the get fixed, new features are added, and in the long run we're all able to gather in a pretty cool place and do some pretty cool stuff. So just chill out, eh? |

Just wanted to chime in and voice my unhappiness with the login problems. I have a feeling LL is already losing alot of business, even before the damage control.

Major bug in the preview version!... I went and used same log on as i allways do...and it said that it was wrong make shure caps lock is off bla la bla so i cut and paste'd from the older Sl...same thing, then i tried it real slow pokeing each key every few seconds...same thing then i go back to try the older Sl...and it says No dominon name found or Incorrect logon did my account get deleted or what lol The preview grid is using an old version of the database. I think it is from February 2005. If you are born after that date you won't be able to enter preview. |

I could stand in a completely deserted area and lag, or I can look at my AVI and see that I'm rezzed...go answer an IM on aim/yahoo/msn/icq or load IE to browse *Gasp* THESE forums...and bam, my whole new outfit or skin is ruined with a spiffy little background plastered over random parts of me. I've asked for help a billion times, and at least half of the people on my calling cards experience the same problem (they tried to tell me it was my graphics card when I asked for help.. lol). Not to mention fighting with teleporting (whatever that stupid thing says about not being done in a timely fashion whether you have 4 attachments or 16), the login crap, and all the lag...*Shudders* I left a different game I played for at least 5 years simply cause their support was friggin awful (and I was part of the support - on a lowly level - and nobody would help me help them

You know. With all of the people who play and pay a large amount on this 'game'. It makes me wonder why we should stay with SL and just build our own game... ![]() Trust me Delpha, SOMEBODY will. The history of computers has shown this. IBM and Texas Instruments thought they ruled the roost and no one would be able to stand up to them. They were seriously mistaken. Anytime something shows potential.. copycats aren't far behind. And historically, copycats usually tend to do a much better job. SL is either going to clean up it's act, or someone else is going to come along and clean their clock. |

OK so I am in the UK and understandably have a huge ping to the server as it couldnt be further away if it tried. I really dont get that many problems. Had to reinstall software once yes, possibly a bad upgrade, but since then no problems with crashing.
As for logging in I have only had a problem in the last couple days and only with the northern island (cant rem its name). When I am able to get in if I move to the main continent I can get in fine. With regards to lag you would think with my location I would be constantly lagged, but I very rarely notice it. Noone is forcing you to pay extra money for land tiers, I pay the monthly charge for a premium account and make do with my 512m2. However I do believe a rebate scheme for downtime and unavailability should be employed and credit everyone subscribing (premium accounts) across the board, once the problems are fixed. Eve-online had major problems where the servers were offline for a day and it creditted everyone with a day's extra subscription regardless of whether they tried to get on or not. <edit> Eve also needs downtime of 30mins to 1hr every day to keep things running quick and doesnt render live like SL does </edit> Finally, I agree with what Robin posted. At our place one of the directors cant understand why things cant be done quicker if he has more developers working on the same problem. In our place at least each developer works on their part of the project alone and talk to each other if their parts of the project interconnect. Most developers have their own way of working to get to the same ending and having lots of different developers working on the same problem can cause it to take longer. Having lots of developers working to identify where the problem is, is a completely different set of events than working to fix it. I work in a technical capacity within IT support/administration/technical and I have a lot of patience for this project as I know how development teams work and I know how systems work. <Waits for abuse and flames to start as it seems that for the majority of you the word forum translates to "vent anger"> |
