The argument suggested, Alt can be used to cause grief. I'd like to point out Alt can be used to avoid grief. So in a way it kind of counter balances it self out.
By listing alts grifters could fallow people from one account to another. Witch could have a large negative effect.

Yeah. Its where people ignore the automated response to IMs and say 'oh no you're not' and continue jabbering away at you. Its where people still hunt you down and stand there while you're working, trying to chat away or poke around in what you're doing.

It's totally fscking useless, is what it is, until people respect that busy means busy.

Oh yeah, how I hate that! I thought busy mode would give me some privacy, but there is no such thing! I don't even want to see that blue IM thingie when I'm busy. I don't want anyone to be able to track me down when I'm busy! The "Busy" feature acts like a flashing sign that reads: "come bug the hell outta me".

Its not abusive at all. In fact its supported by the lindens, and its even against the TOS to say who it who's alt without permission. Its the users who cause abuse not alts. Its the lindens job to see if alts are being abused as they have access to that info. (id hope they use it.) Not saying I like greifing, because I hate it as much as the next.. umm.. err. Av.

But for every person you try to 'teach a lesson' by exposing alts, you're invading the privacy of someone who uses alts and secondary accounts for legitimate reasons.

Oh, there's plenty of legitimate reasons to have alternate accounts. However, there is no legitimate reason to keep this information private.

If you're using an alt account to hide from someone, then why? Is someone stalking you? Then don't you think it's the stalker who needs to be dealt with?

Sure there is.

The best one of all.

The reason is...

It's none of your buisness. You have no need or right to know what other accounts are on my credit card.

The only thing it would remove would be total anonymity. You can still do whatever you want with your alt.

This would lead to things not being totally accurate. There are 4 accounts on my credit card. 2 are actually me, the other two are people I trust a great deal. Singned up in their names, email address, etc. Just paid for by me. They are in no way, shape or form my alts.

No, the legitimate reason of ...you just want some time alone to do something and you have too many friends that will disrupt you while on with your main.

Let's say I'm a respected and well liked business man. Everyone in second life likes me. But on weekends I slip into my alt and I am a male escort, or a dancer at a club... Who knows. Now, what if all my customers knew I was also a male escort, or a dancer? There's nothing wrong with either of those things, but sometimes you don't want one lot of people, knowing ALL your business. The fact of the matter is, if you are something else at other times, that's private, and every person has a right to privacy. That is a reaon to keep alt information private, and no amount of arguing will diminish it.

When "none of your business" becomes frequently abused? Not good enough, I'm afraid.

If they're really your friends, won't they understand you don't want to be disrupted?

And if they don't, isn't that why SL has the Mute feature?

Hey Cereal Milk, you're a guy right? You gay? :) How many times do you masturbate a day? You think about guys when you do it? None of my damn business? You're right. Now leave people to do whatever it is they do in their own privacy. Let's not go down the route that everyone's business is everyone's business cause it's not, and I apologise that this post was a little graphic, but the point had to be made.

Doesn't work that way.

I have an alt myself and I have never used it to do anymore than explore or work quietly on things.

...and yes they are really my friends and they all like to say hi and talk....I'm not talking 2 or 3 ....i'm talking 20-30.

Just because some asswipe does something wrong don't take it out on me for doing nothing wrong.

Then let me rephrase it even more bluntly:

You have no right to know who my alts are.

Period.

Yes, what if? If you were that good of a businessman, I sure wouldn't stop doing business with you solely because you're also a male escort/dancer.

Yes, but not at the expense of accountability. What happens when a child molestor is convicted? Do you think he should be able to just change his name, meet new people and go about his life as if nothing ever happened? It's his privacy, man!

Every alt is COMPLETELY held responsible for their actions....LL knows who they are and you don't need to.

Yo Cereal Milk, you didn't answer my question about your, uh, social agenda. If you're all for knowing all MY private business, you should start by telling us all your private business.

And you're putting words in my mouth. I never asked anyone to disclose any of that, or for that matter any of their real-life information (which is against the TOS for good reason).

It's not, you're right. And it's not what I'm arguing. And therefore, there was in fact no point made here. Good job.

How many alts I hold, and what the names of them are is as much my business as the number of times you give yourself a treat. Because knowing who my alts are lets you dig up all personal info about whatever it is I like to do. So go on, how many treats do you give yourself a week?

If a friend doesn't understand something as simple as "I'd rather be alone right now," then it's perhaps best if you lose them.

When I want to be alone I don't want to explain it 30 times.....get it? I want to be alone.
