Billy, I'd have to say the using of alts to manipulate the public stats of your main sounds like gaming the system a la offshore accounts. The world has an inaccurate view of your main's net worth because you are offloading the money. I'm not making any accusations, I actually don't care if people do this, but it does illustrate how alts can be used to manipulate the mechanics of the game. Furthermore, having all the alts listed in your profile would in no way effect keeping you off the boards.

There's also busy mode; prevents IMs. Perhaps there should be a mode as well for "ONLY receive messages from the following" or something.

At this point in time we seem to have two choices. Continue with alts the way they are going and suffer, or make people accountable in open view for them. We all know from being around this game for a very long time that Linden just doesn't seem able to effectively and speedily deal with griefing unless it is extreme, and even then it seems to take considerable time.

Thats not manipulating it.. Its making it more like rl.. when you see me walk down the street you dont see how much money i have in my bank account. I have been up there many times before and find that people tend to expect you to loan them money buy them things or buy things from them. I like the privacy of not having newbs im me thinking im going to give them $$

There is a kinds simple solution to this: When someone grief with an alt the lindens track down the ip (they can as far as i know) and catch the main account. Then, while they issue the punishment they publish the WHOLE list of characters under that ip and apply the punishment to all of them, not only to one.
This would have the following effects:
Wouldnt disturb alts used in a legit way.
Would discourage griefers to do it with their alts because the reputation of the main avi would be hit as well.
Yes it would hit family members possibly playing on the same ip, but after all if your family member is a griefer, you are the one that has the best ability to stop him, for your own interest.
In any case i always thought: If someone is a griefer, why should the lindens protect his privacy (thus actually protecting his right to be a griefer)?

I wouldn't support this idea. Some people use alts to escape griefing. What I would support is having suspensions and bannings apply to all accounts on a single CC or IP. If you get your alt banned your main goes with it. No exceptions.

That's a good idea.

Yeah. Its where people ignore the automated response to IMs and say 'oh no you're not' and continue jabbering away at you. Its where people still hunt you down and stand there while you're working, trying to chat away or poke around in what you're doing.

It's totally fscking useless, is what it is, until people respect that busy means busy.

Well, if you're on your land, you can TP them home. Or you can just hit them with something.

You're wanting to ban alts because they have the potential to be abused.

That's ridiculous.

You want a list of stuff in SL that can be abused by this prevalent griefer trend?

In no particular order, and off the top of my head

push scripts, teleport scripts, sitting on cubes, car scripts (might crash into a building, ya know), physical objects of any kind, custom avatars (hate speech), protest signs, texture changers, the ability to upload sounds, images (might be "inappropriate";), scripting of any kind (might crash a sim, ya knoiw), custom anythings of any kind (might push someone's buttons wrong).

I use my alts for two things. Interruption-free exploration and group land holding. While I wouldn't be ashamed to admit them (they don't do anything, after all), I'd much rather keep them under wraps.

There are a few good reasons to have alts. Let's not remove them to stop DEH GREEFS!!!!111oneoneeleven111

I do. Doesnt alter the fact that people can't take a hint in the first place. So an alt is way easier and far more effective.

Whilst I acknowledge that most griefing is carried out by alts, residents should have the right not to have their's listed in their profile. There are perfectly innocent reasons for someone having alts and they should remain confidential.

LL has the information to ban both the alt/s and main account.

Naw, its Blaze who wants all that other stuff banned for everyone because the few use them for nefarious purposes :)

I also know of some situations where 'alts' aren't alts at all... Some couples, for example, have both of their characters on the same CC.

That is very true - my husband and I have both our accounts on the same credit card. I think that the Lindens are best handling this on an Avatar by Avatar basis.

I'm sorry, but if your husband is being a jerk, I would have to say we are better off without both of you. I SINCERELY doubt your husband is a griefer. Married men almost never perform the type of griefing being discussed here. Therefore, your point is largely moot. There are too many good reasons not to list alts. The good done would be horribly overshadowed by the bad.

I reiterate: Only by putting our money where our mouths are will we get rid of the griefers. Abuse already has the tools to do this. Phillip Linden isnt making them do it. On the contrary, he is perpetuating the problem by his mushy, wishy washy abuse setup. There are people with literally hundreds of grievances filed against them, who still have their alts they did the deeds with!! Nothing is done!! Mr Linden doesnt care enough to solve the problem. And he wont, until we MAKE him care.

I recommend we form a group in game, a first attempt to band together enough people to get his attention. I may be putting my SL game on the line here, but many others have more to lose than I. So I'll be the first. Put up or shut up! Lets do it!

The only thing removing alts will do is make them impossible for even LindenLabs to track down.

Long live alts! They rule! Never change a thing about them! They are legal, and they are delicious.

You cannot log two copies of SL on at once, even using workarouns like "run" with the address as you could in TSO. So the only way you could run several accounts at once and do things like rate each other to drive up your ratings is if you have a whole bank of computers on a network to attempt to log in separately, and I'm not sure even that works. The number of players with that kind of capacity is going to be very small indeed, and I think the chances of someone with a network or multi-computers or even differents ISPs also being a griefer are slim, since most griefers are kids probably using one computer their parents pay for.

Alts are needed not only to have different characters in what is a role-playing game for some, but also to get work done in sandboxes, etc. without getting constant IMs. The idea that "busy" mode is enough is silly, because your friends have your calling cards, they can come get you and bother you in a sandbox or on a job when you're trying to just get work done without the incessant socializing that some demand.

It's good to have more than a second life, but have a third, fourth, etc. life. It's a game where alts are allowed, and as Lordfly said, you have to assume all the women are males, or at least the alts of a male. Manage your life accordingly and don't whine.

Alts are not benefits, they are only work. They are an extra mouth to feed in terms of clothes, hair, houses, ratings, etc. Trying to make an alt look not like an alt is especially a lot of work : ) In my experience, the amount of stipend you can get for an alt barely offsets their cost to you, in terms of their requirements for a look, house, etc.

I oppose the Lindens publicizing all the avatars of one account just because one avatar is caught griefing. First of all, the range of activities that are "bannable" are just too wide, and some of them too silly. Say you shot somebody you even were best friends with on a sim where you can't shoot. You agree that neither of you will abuse-report the other. Then some jerkimer reports you, and you are banned for a week. I've seen this happen. Then the Lindens get to shut down all your other accounts, too, and invade your privacy?

Publicizing alts if the customer does not wish to have them published (i.e. like putting the same website or tag on their profiles as I do) is against their own TOS about privacy. If the Lindens went to this grand extreme, they should only do it over some really grievious offense, like crashing an entire sim.

People who say you can use "busy" or have another look in a folder on the same alt just don't get the joy of alts. No one expects to them. But they should leave alts alone to do their thing unless they can demonstrate that they have seriously, grieviously harmed the game. And they can't. If anything, the angry mob here on the forums can make on avatar's life miserable, and thank God for alts : )

Really? Hundreds of grievances? How do you know? Are you Daniel Linden?

And how do you propose we make them care? Start griefing ourselves? Excellent suggestion. I'll be sure to get on the anonymous jury of residents when your 2-week ban is in effect.

Because groups do stuff. Right.

Sorry, but a player-led group has absolutely zero teeth to do anything. The only ways you could retaliate -- massive griefing, neg rate parties, overzealous abuse reports -- are all against ToS and CS.

Vigilante Justice is not the answer.

Actually, you CAN get multiple copies of SL running.

For anyone intelligent who wants to know how I know about the number of grievances filed, I work as the head of security for a well known club. And have for some time now. I insist that everyone file on any griefers in the bldg. My guests mostly know me well, and comply, wishing a better atmosphere themselves. Many I'm close friends with. So yes, the regular bombers/shooters/griefers, the ones that come 3-4 times a week, blowing 25+ people out of the club...they have literally hundreds of abuse reports filed on them. And thats actually estimating on the short side...it could be over 1000 for the more ambitions griefers, who have been around a while.

The majority of your post is about griefing. You're going on a tangent about doing something about griefers.

At the end of your message, you post a nebulous comment about "forming a group to get the lindens' attention". To the layman (or, apparently, just us morons), not being specific enough means you're referring to the rest of your message. Which is, apparently (maybe I'm jut too dumb), about griefers running amok.

Proper proofreading of your post PRIOR to you hitting the post button is usually a Good Thing(tm). I'd look into it.

Watch the real-time abuse reports handled and see if your griefers come up.

When the same person...exact same person..bombs the club 3 days a week for over a month....I dont need to watch them...I can see for myself nothing is being done...I stated I am head of security....I get all the info first hand, with my own eyes. Many days I work 15+ hours a day, to insure my guests are not harassed. I KNOW what I'm saying. If you had read my post you would have read that I was talking about talking with our MONEY....as in not paying for renewals for the month...NOT GRIEFING THE INNOCENT PPL> get it now? read...read...understand.
