Not only that but some people actually pay for an additional account. So which is the alt of either account?

You just made my head explode. My alt is still OK though.

I would never, ever, divulge information about my alts to anyone except my closest friends. The reason I have alts is so I can be left alone. Sometimes I get a little tired of answering hundreds of IMs a day, the alts provide me with a way to escape from this, if only for a short time.

The same thing goes for my friends' alts. I would never disclose that information to anyone else, ever.

Those who give up their freedom for security will find they have neither freedom nor security.

Much as I dislike the abuse of alt accounts, there are legitimate uses for them too, which would be harmed by revealing this kind of information.

Don't be so sure about this. Not you personally...but you'd be surprised how much information L$1000 will get you these days. ;)

I wouldn't support this idea. Some people use alts to escape griefing. What I would support is having suspensions and bannings apply to all accounts on a single CC or IP. If you get your alt banned your main goes with it. No exceptions.

so how do you determine what's an alt and what's a legitimate account? my mother father and sister all have SL accounts... so if my sister causes Havok we're all gon?
nope don't think so.

Well that is fine EXCEPT that many RL spouses etc share a CC.

Isn't it nice how SL will encourage spouses (spice?) to be nice to each other? :)

Aboriginal Linguistic Technician. What they have to do with Semantic Linguistics should be really obvious. Come on, anyone would think you're new to these boards.

It's no one's business what alts a person might have. It would be an extremely stupid idea to require all alts listed in profiles as this ruins the reasons for having alts in the first place. A better idea is to bring back some form of verification so that LL can tie accounts to actual RL people. There is ZERO reason that information should go any further than just LL.

All alts should be named in all profiles... not just alts of that alt, but all alts... everybodys alts, and mains... and and and... oh wait... 300,000 line profiles... let's get a bigger dataloss server

Ok. So, everybody wants griefers to be able to hide behind their alts, and we all know that banning/Linden action is laughably ineffective. I also fail to understand why, in a game that is about society, people have such a strong desire to run away from their mains, but that's just me. I never use alts and have never liked them in any game I've ever played. If I had one in SL I would have no issue at all publishing that I was the owner and being completely open about it. I am who I am in SL and have no desire to hide from it. But admittedly that is a personal sentiment and apparently an unpopular one.

Anyway, perhaps list other ideas instead of just shooting down one of the two proposed? How do you prevent the rampant abuse of alts in this game, with the understanding that asking the Lindens to get more involved is more than unlikely?

Those of us that run businesses in SL sometimes are so bombarded by IMs that the only way that we can get to spend any time to actually relax in SL is to log on as an alt. Why should that be taken away? Its not running and hiding. Having your alts on display would be a little like having your work telephone redirected to your house when you left for the day.

That's a good idea.

Single CC has already been covered - they may be more than one person using one CC..... and of course that is pretty much a moot point now as CC info is not needed.

As for IP banning - this is not really practical as IPs are not constant. I could get banned reset my router and get a different IP and someone else gets banned because they have my ip.

Wouldnt really work. I have over 13 credit cards and i can call my isp and get them to assign me a new ip on a whim. There has to be another way.

The basic thing we need IMHO is something that makes it a little more difficult to make an alt for the purpose of griefing then just logging off and on.

If someone really wants to grief I suppose no matter what LL does short of coming to thier house and placing them under 24 hour guard in an all plastic enclosure suspended over a 100 meter pit which is onyl reachable by an extendable bridge which is guarded by 3 armed guards who scan all those entering the area for metal and electronics ohh wait that didnt work either:=(

some people are on shared networks, lan houses, computer coffee shops etc. Wouldn't work. sry. But what they could do is ban your mac address.

I think everyones phone and address should also be listed in the profile. Maybe even credit card number. For USA players a mandatory ssn should be required. That'll stop those d@mn griefers!

What is this "Alt Abuse"?

I just want to clear the record and state that I have NEVER abused my Alt. She gets the best. Clothes, shoes and I even give her cash. I let her go to the best events while I work. In fact, my alt gets better treatment than I do.

Yes, the Federal government would applaud for anything that made it a little easier to tax people on their in-game income. :)

Don't forget blood type, retinal scans, and fingerprints. We must be thorough.
