I can't help wondering how far this thread would have run if the forums were readable by outsiders...
I mean, what a brilliant advert for Linden Lab. I'm sure it would have potential investors and potential customers flocking to do business. _____________________

I'm sure it would have potential investors and potential customers flocking to do business. A potential investor or customer would be foolish not to spend a bit of time poking around to get the lay of the land from the perspective of the community. All in all, I think this situation has been (and contines to be) handled very badly. As Introvert said, if LL had contacted the Stagecoach Island content providers once the beta was done, informed them of the situation, and paid them the accumulated L$ for their work, this would be effectively a non-issue. As it stands, though, the disorganization exhibited and near-complete lack of communication makes this extremely important for anyone thinking of participating in any future projects of this sort. Notice, too, that my hotline post has gone unanswered for three days. It's a pretty simple question -- "Did Wells Fargo (or their agent in charge of the project) violate copyright by taking materials without compensation to the creators, does the contract between Wells Fargo and Linden Research Inc. give them the right to take all the users' creations with them to ActiveWorlds (perhaps by LL invoking their right to transfer license to third-parties, reserved in s5.2 in the Terms of Service), or is there some other explanation? |

Not sure that's a simple question. I have no idea how many legal issues sl has to deal with but I imagine the legal linden guy would have to be asked about it to be sure and get an accurate response, and his inbox probably isn't empty.

Your hotline question was fairly loaded on several levels, so I doubt you will get an answer to it. You are asking them to declare whether or not Wells Fargo committed a crime, and also asking for details of a private contract. _____________________

You are asking them to declare whether or not Wells Fargo committed a crime, and also asking for details of a private contract. I don't feel the question was loaded at all. I summarized the problem as it appeared, put forth a couple of alternative scenarios that had been discussed in the thread, and asked for further clarification. I do, however, think you're probably right about having it answered. Even though hedge-y, non-commital responses such as, "due to contractual obligations, we're not at liberty to divulge details of our relationship with WF/Swivel" or "we have no knowledge of how content was moved from SL. Individual creators must pursue this matter with Swivel directly" would be entirely acceptable. |

Just to update the thread, after Catherine's prompting Reuben has now finally replied to my email from the 9th January regarding payment. Payments will, apparently, be made next week.

Can we create protest signs in AW and stage a march on SI there to raise awareness of how SL developers are being exploited? I mean, 1 of 2 cases seems to exist: 1. Bedazzle signed a really crappy contract that wrote over all their IP and allows derivative products with no authorization. (And probably got paid far less than contractor rates for it.) 2. Active Worlds simply snubbed their noses at SL developers and decided that "development should be left to the 'pros' ", hence SL developers deserve no rights. I'm really shocked to hear that LL caught wind of this in November and didn't contact people. I'd be really, really pissed if it were my stuff that got copied over. ![]() Yes, you can go in AW and leave signs there. Furthermore, you don't have to subscribe to do that - just go in as a tourist and do it anonimously. Well, sort of anonimously, because AW WILL know your IP address. But...wouldn't it be considered as 'griefing' ![]() It is sad, very sad what happened. A lot of people got hurt including LL, even those who just heard of what happened feel emotional about it. I just hope that a wonderful thing like SEcond Life will continue to prosper because despite all the politics, griefing, 'some low life behavior and/or content', SL is the best VR out there with lots potential and lots to come. AW can try to 'catch up' with SL. They can TRY. It creates a healthy competition out there. But SL is still the best and we can make sure it stays that way. I'm sure it was a good lesson for all of us so lets just move on because it looks like from a legal point of veiw there were some mistakes made. There are reasons why I spend most of my free time here and not in AW or D&D or other games. There is a reason why I bought a lifetime membershihp I'm sure everyone here has a reason to be here too... I don't usually talk much..even more, despite being 'an oldtimer', here, in SL and 'an oldtimer' in AW in the past, I think this is my first post on this forum. so..please don't get on my case for expressing how I feel right now ![]() _____________________

Dear LL;
It has been noted in a few articles I read this morning that SI/WF moved to Active Worlds they sited security as one of the reasons for leaving SL. "not really being independent from the rest of the grid". This leads me to ask how separate is the teen grid really and how secure is it? We were assured that the teen grid would be separate. We were then told that it is on the same grid but invisible. So since I'm a paying customer I would like to know from LL what the security issue was regarding the independence/separation from the main grid? Catherine Cotton _____________________

Then you should have posted it in Linden Answers, shouldn't you? ![]() P2 No this was the right place to post, given that Lindens have already responded in this thread. My question is related to this thread. I'm sure you didn't mean to bark an order at me, a friendly suggestion probably would of been best. But it was somehow lost when I saw your "eyes rolling" icon. _____________________

Troll Hmm, I'm not sure this post agrees with your assertion that 100% of your posts are worth reading. You will have to re-evaluate your assesment. _____________________
