And where does this leave Gor, for heavens sake? Are the Goreans supposed to make all their sims Adult only? In practice, I guess they will have to.

From: Blondin Linden

Gor would be considered adult.

Gor isnt adult!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If anyof you ever read the book
theres not much Sex in the books annd most of the sex is implied. Its a Fantasy world with some great RP. Because some SL users have chosen to intesifie the sexual content in Gorean does not mean that Gor as a whole should be punished!!!!

[...]In my opinion people aren't talking enough about the effect printing 300 mainland sims and evicting all adult businesses will have on the land market. Probably it's only really very important to the few of us who are big into land.
I've been kind of wondering why more of the large landholders aren't screaming bloody murder about this. Maybe they're still shell-shocked by the OpenSpace thing, (and the OpenSpace thing before, and all that came before that...). Or else they think they know something we don't.

One thing is that LL has some control over how fast and deep existing Mainland prices collapse, just by controlling when and if they push abandoned / traded parcels to auction. Lately I've been bumping into a lot of large Governor-owned parcels without Auction ID assigned, so they already may be trying to manage prices (beyond not bringing new full sims to auction).

I'm not sure whether that can be enough leverage to forestall market collapse. Maybe.

Oh, and P.S., communication within Groups cannot be considered "public" 100% of the time, either, since a Group does not communicate to the random masses.

In client 1.23, there is a maturity rating on the info tab of groups. It currently only lists PG and Mature as options. Will there be an adult option? If not, why not?

What exactly does the maturity rating for a group do? Does it only control what appears in search results for the group, or other things?

It most certainly does not censor group chat. At least, SO far... ;)

It's not the crash so much as the uncertainty. It's not clear what will happen. Probably mainland prices will fall but AO land prices will fluctuate wildly. In times of uncertainty risk is higher and I'll only buy land where the probability of a profit is very high.

It'll mess up estates too, lots of turmoil with people being evicted, sims being abandoned, mainland prices will be cheap and that will suck away customers. We froze all estate expansion until this thing and the Homestead pricing increase shake out. I'm sure others are doing the same.

In my opinion people aren't talking enough about the effect printing 300 mainland sims and evicting all adult businesses will have on the land market. Probably it's only really very important to the few of us who are big into land.

Thanks for explaining it to me its appreciated and perhaps you should be asking these questions as it seems it could do a lot of damage to your business as well and it is important to all of us in one way or another because if the economy really goes south over this a lot of people will get burnt. While LL doesn't seem to be worrying, perhaps they have decided now that we are not their target market anymore.

It's not the sex, necessarily. To many, Gor is misogynistic and glorifies slavery. It very politically uncorrect, totally unsuitable for SL's new Corporate Overlords

It's on the website search:

http://search.secondlife.com/search.php

Find someone who says something in their profile like "I'm a Stripper", search for their first name at the above link and they won't show up.

Search for their first name inworld and they will show up for now.

If you plan on using Adult words in your ads / search, 1) the place / event will need to be on an adult region and 2) only verified accounts will be able to search and find those key words.

The cushion should be advertised using non adult words

Gorean buildings and clothing are not adult content Blondin. So this isn't about extreme content at all is it, stop stringing people along.

Whilst you're at it tell us what's going on with search now that profiles are being censored on the website search, when will places meet the same fate? A place selling Gorean buildings won't consider themselves as adult in many cases, same goes for clothing so tell people what's going on so they can adjust their keywords hey.

Thank you for a clear and helpful reply, Blondin. It wasn't the one for which I was hoping, but at least I can start to try to make some informed decisions.

I have to say would be greatly helped in following your advice that
From: someone
The cushion should be advertised using non adult words
if I knew what words to avoid, though.

I know the rationale is that no one should know what they are since that will supposedly enable people to "game the system," but I am at a loss as what "gaming the system" could possibly mean in these circumstances ...

As I understand it, if I want to try drafting adverts "using non adult words" I just keep on trying out descriptions until I come up with a formulation that the browser will accept, and in the course of my unsuccessful attempts I will, obviously, be compiling a list of words to avoid. What possible purpose is served by making me play this sort of word-game?

I don't want to "game the system" -- I don't even understand what the phrase means in this context. All I want to do, as, I am sure, do many others, is take a considered decision about whether it's better to change some product descriptions and advertising or to move somewhere else. A list of words to avoid would save a great deal of time and simplify the process no end.

For heavens sake; I come to SL to make things and enjoy myself, not to have to deal with -- literally -- incomprehensible regulations. Tell me what the rules are and I'll abide by them -- that's not an unreasonable request, is it?

They can just use "Out of business" for keywords

Blondin said that LL (rightly or wrongly) would not be publishing the list of adult keywords. Their reasoning (rightly or wrongly) was to stop people from "gaming the system". Residents then went ahead and started a Wiki page on LINDEN'S SERVERS to document that very thing.

Now LL remove the page and you are all surprised and indignant?

*rolls eyes* You REALLY didn't see that one coming?

No, I totally saw it coming, and I'm surprised it even lasted this long. Yeah, hosting it on the Linden Lab Wiki was a little cheeky. Okay, a lot cheeky.

If I'm indignant about anything, it's the open ended statement that the list was inaccurate without further explanation. Readers might infer that the contributors made it up for whatever purpose. That was not the case, and phony entries could easily be outed.

The resident's list would not be particularly useful for someone intent on gaming the system as it was incomplete.

If the list was indeed inaccurate, then it's more important, as there are issues with the search engine that need to be addressed before the 1.23 viewer is released.

So why not make it "accurate" istead of deleting it?..........hmmmmmmm....?

I think the issue is that this news that "Gor is adult" means anything associated with it is automatically adult.

Or do you think that every Gor-related parcel on the grid contains adult content?

No surprise at all. As for "gaming the system" Linden Labs itself is gaming the system. They are changing the nature of the program. Not informing everyone of the fact that what they are buying isn't what they think they are buying.

I can't sell you a copper engraving of Abraham Lincoln, for $20 and send you a shiny new penny. “Whoops sorry ran out of the original ones. So I substituted this, its the same thing” I would be committing fraud.

Well its lucky there is another one running then :) People should be aware of what words they can and cannot use in their adverts and people will still game it even if they have a list as they will keep trying until they get a word that isn't banned

Name the continent contest
04-28-2009 10:21
From: Shockwave Yareach
At least it would show LL isn't completely overrun by mindless Ogres who resort to MBA manuals to solve problems.

I propose a contest/vote to name the new continent or it's sims. Step one: take name suggestions, step two, post a vote to Resident Answers. Ill start with the ones I have heard and obvious ideas:

Pornsylvania
Pornotopia
Sin City
The Red Light District
NC-17
New Amsterdam
Adultsville

Yes but the rest of the parcel will still appear right now for other keywords, profiles don't, someone who has typed Gorean on their profile will not have a HTML link to their profile appear if you search via the website.

probably because he has some misguided idea that the people on here are some kind of dysfunctional community who want to work together to pressure LL into making changes to some of their more damaging ideas around this.

I could be wrong of course.

I am going (well Consie) to put a forum up on slapt.me tonight so it should be running properly tomorrow, watch this space :P

WOW Linden Censorship
04-28-2009 10:25
From: Blondin Linden
Hey All,

I deleted the SL Wiki page about the Adult Key Words. I just wanted to give you a heads up. The list was incorrect anyway so we decided to take it down.

1) Perhaps LL should correct the list and publish it themselves.

2) Do believe an alternate copy of the list was create, Please post the address again!
Thumbs nose to Blondin.

3) Perhaps a Notecard should be made available on XStreet, for 0L$
with banned words and alternative spellings to find adult products.
Could also be handed out all over SL, and at landing areas.

History shows, for every act of suppression, a populace will find the
way to express themselves and find birds of a feather.

Blondin, your on a very slippery slope!

Yes lost in the long list of all the other generic "family friendly" keywords.

No doubt that the content wold be PG, but the word TITS would be flagged and your ad would only found by verified accounts.

Blondin, I'm still catching up. But that is blatantly unacceptable.

Until the codemonkeys can add in contextual search then ANY word that has a strictly PG usage in addition to whatever adult usage it has must be flagged as needing review and manually checked out if the parcel rating does not match it to adult. If the content is mature or pg then it should be allowed to stand after a manual review... period.

It is blatantly unacceptable to force creators of non-adult content to not be able to advertise their product effectively because of draconian handling of this matter.

Additionally, please have the team reinstate the list of banned words to the wiki, or make it publicly accessible. Those who would game the system will game it anyway... pr0n anyone... and those who will end up running afoul of it are going to be the people who have legitimate reasons to use those words.

As a content creator who makes things that span the gamut from purely pg fun stuff to things that I only want visible to adults. I am happy to move my adult oriented products to pornsylvania, but now this is affecting a lot more than just the adults.

Things that need to be done...

1. Contextual based search - this needs to be implemented. The plan will still have massive amounts of fail if you rely on a list of keywords with no context, gaming the system will be easier than you think. The only SANE way to do this is through contextual search.

what that means to me - expand the options for parcel owners. Leave the description field, but add in a keyword field. That keyword field would be treated as meta tags for web pages, the end user does not see this, only the search engine. Once that is in place encourage landowners to populate the description field with an actual description. I HATE with a passion having to describe my parcels half with a keyword list because otherwise I have no place to put keywords.

additionally - add in a tab for parcel picks like the profiles have picks. This will allow for the search spider to see what other things the parcel owner feels like letting people know about (community shops, or where hair was purchased for the promos, or places to see that naughty furniture in use) and can be helpful in determining edge cases in the software.

2. Until such time as contextual search can be implemented the 'bad words' that have also purely pg uses need to be either allowed in all cases, or will need internal flags for further inspection if the parcel is not on adult land. And then those flags need to be investigated in a timely manner to make sure that the content truly is pg or mature and has a legitimate use. Until contextual search is in place NO other way than to allow it or check every instance is acceptable.

~Pho

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mosley Sperber, if you'd like, please send me in world some images of your tits on a plain white background (full perm images) and I'll make a t-shirt that says save the tits for you.
meanwhile, unless somebody beats me to it, once I catch up I plan to add a jira for the contextual search need. There is no good reason for pg and mature creators to have to worry about running afoul of 'adult' terms when the use can be justified.
