I'm trying to think of ways to stay in touch after this hits the fan. As it is theres tons of clubs i've already found I would Have NEVER found before. So this would be a good thing. And my club doesnt get any special treatment ovr any other.
the only thig dealt harshly with will be the clothing peoples advertising unless they ONLY sell adult listed items...

From: Valerius Constantine I'm not sure that this is a valid assumption. I'm sure that someone said:
"Even if a few malcontents complain about it, where else are they gonna go?"
But that isn't the same thing as a clear-eyed appraisal of:
"We're gonna lose about 30% of our NPIOF users, which will have a cascade effect throughout the SL economy. This will not only put many adult content creators out of business, but will also put a lot of pressure on content creation that feeds *into* the adult content sector, and severely affect your tier collection numbers, at least in the short term"
I'm pretty sure that *nobody* said that in any meeting before a month ago. I think that this plan was hatched in a bubble of happy gas and denial.
I'm betting they figure that despite much wailing and gnashing of teeth, very few paying users will actually leave. As for NPIOF users, the ones LL wants to keep will probably put PIOF, and be more likely to spend more money in SL. The ones they lose are (theoretically) the ones who don't spend any money, and won't be missed anyway. Whether or not it actually works out that way, I guess that depends on how many spending NPIOF users leave. Oh, and speaking of, LL is not doing themselves any favors in retaining those users. Many, many people still think the AC policy means they'll have to send a DNA sample to the CIA to get verified. This is where refusing to make broad announcements in world may not be such a hot plan.

From: Thorn Witrial See? This is what I mean. Massive, pervasive uninformed users. They are JUST NOW finding out some of the stuff we've been talking about for weeks (if not months and years). The teen grid blend has been in the air for ages and Devra just found out. This is why I hope people spend some time on the more frequented boards and let people know what is going on. It's horrifying to me how people are in the dark about this. Unfortunately, the only thing that will solve this problem is a login screen announcement of the proposed changes. LL Doesn't have any desire to do that, because they *know* what will happen. they will get a 95% disapproval rate. they don't *want* a 95% disapproval rate, and so they are *hiding from it*. They are kidding themselves that if they just spring it on the residents along with a mandatory viewer update, we'll all just swallow it without more than grumbling. They're wrong, of course, but trying to *tell* them so hasn't been very successful so far. Mark isn't reading his mail, Blondin evidently has instructions to concentrate on piddling details of "Is *my* parcel "adult?" and ignore everything else, while the Xstreet fora are being used as a "no problem here at all! stop exaggerating!" platform. LL has their little fantasy all safely insulated to the point where the first inkling they will have of impending disaster is the first time Tier collections won't pay operating costs. -V-

I hope to contribute to that scenario.
And IIRC when it was suggested this change be publicized via the login screen in the original discussion thread on this topic (now locked), Blondin essentially replied: hmm ... interesting idea. That was when I began selling off my land.

From: Firebird Nightfire My stepsister signed up for SL, took one look around, and decided never to come back. I asked her why, and she told me it was because all of the pornography. The only thing I can figure is that she found her way into a skin shop. Some of those skin shop pics can be rather explicit for my tastes as well. I would prefer if the full frontal nudity is behind a wall so I can stay out of that section if I wish.
So you consider the naked body pornographic? What a sad sad person.

From: Ayla Holt I know. I didn't mean it was our job. I just meant that we can't let LL get away with keeping this under wraps. Well, we can. But I hope that we don't let them get away with this. I just know that I am going to do everything in my power to make sure that everyone I know is informed about it and gets a chance to voice their opinion on it. Of course we can't. But we can feel pissy about LL's dereliction of duty whilst we're about it! -V-

I'm guessing she got to the wonderful PG Welcome Area and got a warmer welcome than she was expecting. The same Welcome that is occuring as we speak. The same Welcome that this entire AC policy does nothing to address? I bet if you were to ask her what she saw and where she was, I bet she never even made it out of the Welcome Area. The Welcome Area was created by Linden Labs, not the residents.

From: Valerius Constantine The problem is that "mature" outnumbers PG about 3-1 on the main grid. Yes. Thats the problem LL faces. SL has been up and running for some years now. The numbers are in the 10s of 1,000s of regular users. Not millions. So why arent the millions, regular users of SL? What do they want that they cant get already in SL?

From: Firebird Nightfire This is probably way too late in the convo, but I will put my L$1 (converts to 2 cents ) in. Anything that would get a movie an NC17 rating in the US should be what gets an Adult Content rating in SL. And I like the idea of putting all the AC into one "red light district" so that those of us who don't wish to encounter this stuff can avoid it. I do understand that moving can be aggrivating, though. I hope this can be worked out to the satifaction of the majority - no solution will please everyone involved. And news: seen from behind, we are *all* looking the same and seen frontal, we're fitting together. The LEGO-principe. But I know such people: they are watching 200 times a day the WTC-buildings crashing down with no eye blink and decent yawning, but if they see *skin*...

Should be a PG continnt, not adult
04-26-2009 01:23
I think Linden labs is doing a disservice segregating the Adult themes. But I like the focus of the technologoical solutions. I think all new accounts should be restricted to the PG continent with their own client that cant access the main grid.
If people are complaining they want a PG experience set one up for them, don't punish the rest of us.

Welcome Area/New User Experience
04-26-2009 01:57
I am ashamed of Linden Labs over the experience they provide to new users in the Welcome Area. Yes, the current and on-going situation there is the experience that Linden Labs has created and continues to supply to new users of SL. How many of these New Users never make it out of the Welcome Area? How many of them do, and how many of those people leave after experiencing the rest of the Grid? Those are the numbers I want to know. This is an experience that Linden Labs, not the residents, has created and continues to allow for new users. Linden Labs wants to punish the residents for behavior that they themselves allow to occur in their own supplied PG Environment.
1) There is absolutely no reason to even allow voice in the Welcome Area. What purpose does that serve? There is enough to try and figure out without having to hear griefing orgy fests and lude childish behavior via voice in the process.
2) Lindens have completely nuetered the only people who even care to try and manage the area, your mentors. You have given them no way of controling the massive griefing fest that ensues there.
Oh sure, the media is all a glow with the announcements of "Second Life Cleans Up Their Act!" The problem is, those people that were so turned off by the new-user experience are already coming back, having the same horrid welcoming experience and leaving in the same manner they did the first time around. Only now you have effectively lied. What kind of message of trust is that?
You can clean up the Grid as much as you like, but if you don't start in your own house where everyone starts, then no one will ever get through all the mud to that wonderfully clean experience. Thus making your "Ursula Project" a total failure from the outset.

I tried a while ago, and as chance had there were a minimal number of freaks lurking and I broke through. That is how I put it: I muscled my way through to enter. And, through residents, not you, chose to stay a while.
I have recommended (stupidly, I see at this point) many RL friends, but they always get stuck at LL/griefer entry points and leave. And give me weird looks later. LL, this is YOUR fault.

Protest Toy
04-26-2009 02:28
30 have gone out so far and one bod had posted a flickr pic. For those of you who don't have a xsl account, if you drop me a full perm copy of your texture/item inworld I'll put it up on xsl. If you do have an xsl account, post it there and put the link here!! Also send me a copy of the link to the item and I'll link to it in the ad. More is good. When I saw the flickr pic I realised that there will be people who are a little put off by the gadget so giving people other choices to put in their picture is a fantastic thing. http://www.flickr.com/groups/we_are_adult_content/if you don't have a flickr account, either drop your pic to me in world or email it to couldbe.yue(@)gmail.com and I'll post it for you.

From: Sindy Tsure I've always thought Meta was pretty cool..
Can we please keep this as a discussion about the policy changes? That comment *was* about the changes. A Linden, who is all about "metrics", is making statements that are not substantiated by the numbers. She *ought* to have the numbers to back up her claims. that *is* her area of expertise, according to her "office site". she collects all sorts of metrics about the SL population. she should *know* what the pro/con numbers are and be able to show us the breakdown. She *isn't*. instead, she is spouting the "Linden line" and talking about "millions of unheard future users". I'm sorry if I have offended you by calling her out on her numbers, and for all I know, Meta is a terminally cool person that I'd love to meet and be friends with. But that doesn't make what she's doing any more palatable or *fair*. I'm criticizing her *actions*, not her *person*. To quote John Adams in "1776" "This Is a revolution dammit ! We're going to have to offend *somebody*" -V-

From: Sindy Tsure I've always thought Meta was pretty cool..
Can we please keep this as a discussion about the policy changes? But she made statements and then will not back them up so she is fair game and as a LL mouthpiece, after making them and then refusing or not backing them up she has set the level and she clearly states that she, as a LL representative favors these changes for the people that are not yet here. Then to ask for our trust in this, makes me wonder what she is smoking to think that we would afford LL that trust in them anymore. She might be a nice person RL but based on her history, i wonder. From: someone We do see your concerns, I'm sorry that we don't have time to reply most individual comments, but yes your feelings are valid and deserve to be heard, and we hear you, and your concerns are echoed by others, i.e. you are not alone.
The main things I can point to in response, is: A) there are a *lot* of very positive supportive comments from existing residents saying "it's about time" - and that particularly is coming from Adult Content Creators, and several others working here, so there's no universal consensus - no simple way to make everyone happy all the time. B) The voice you are NOT hearing on the forums (by definition) is the millions of new potential users we want to enjoy Second Life like you do, but aren't here yet. Surveys of people who tried SL but decided it wasn't for them, as well as feedback from new organizations (educational, corporate, and other social networks), pointed out the high visibility of AO content in M spaces as a blocking concern for them. It is for *these* silent potential users we are making this change.
I am sorry that this change is causing you stress and worry. I ask that you have some measure of patience and trust in us, and please *continue* giving feedback as this change rolls out, and also please read through the current blog posts and the details about the new policy. If you look at the specifics of the new program, I believe that most of your concerns will be allayed.
Have a great weekend, and thanks again.

I so totally agree. I worked out how to listen to voice some while after getting into the game and i was then completely shocked by the outrageous griefing going on in the welcome area using the voice-over. And, believe me, from reading this blog, i am one of the most liberal minded in the game. K

From: Bith Wierwight Why I will tier down shortly:
I had a horror gallery I'd set up on PG land (my mistake, as I had no idea LL's original definition of PG -- which includes "horror"-- was more restrictive than the MPAA's. My horror gallery included nothing worse than '31 Frankenstein, or Poltergeist. I repeatedly asked for clarification here in the official response forums and got no response. Anyway, my mistake...so I moved the gallery to "M" rated land a couple of weeks ago. At a massive loss to me as I'd bought the PG land back when land was worth something. <snip>
Bith, we feel your pain, believe me. I said something similar on a previous thread to the effect of "If I have to go to Ursula to watch "Night of the Living Dead", but *slavery* gets to stay on mainland, I'm gonna be *pissed*." I'm not sure what will happen. at this point we have Blondin saying pretty much the same thing consistantly "It's not as bad as you think, and you can get around it with a little effort", whereas we have the blog posts heralding the new, squeaky-clean Disneyfied mainland. Meanwhile, LL *still* hasn't made an in-world announcement about the changes. It's going to be extremely messy no matter *what* happens. LL is practically *engineering* it that way. -V-

From: Argent Stonecutter You might add a link to the wiki page on Adult Content in the description. got it.. now I just need to find Lords too and I fixed the typo on the sign *sigh* I always forget to spellcheck in photoshop. found this when I was searching for the link.. http://education.zdnet.com/?p=2445?zdnet obviously didn't fall on the publicity release with joy - more like laugher.. I just have to post this.. From: someone Hardcore content will also be pushed to a new “continent”, freeing the Second Life mainland from the more intense interactions later this year. TG Daily, among other sources, suggests that the new “PG” area could be a haven for educators in the virtual world. However, with so many great online tools for bringing teachers and students together, why would we possibly bring the tarnished brand of Second Life into our schools, whether K-12 or university? I love the use of the word tarnished

From: Sin Toshi There is no point in arguing for "no changes" LL has made up it's mind and it's a done deal. I only want to be sure that I have as much freedom as possible in the new world order. And it looks like I will be paying out of my own pocket to have it.
If I were to argue anything at all with LL, it would be for land swaps for anyone who requests one (PG, Mature, business owner or private citizen). Anyone who bought land under the old rating system should have the opportunity to swap their land for something they are comfortable with. Oh, absolutely! I'm sorry, I thought that you were commenting on the *current* land use arrangements- I apologize for the misunderstanding and I completely agree with you- If LL requires a move, then anyone who *wants* one should qualify -V-

in the end freedom of expression will prevail either LL accept this or their game will fold and die
freedom of expression is vital for learning, education and for the future of humanity
bickering about what is and what is not pg/mature/adult is completely pointless K

I would prefer if the full frontal nudity is behind a wall so I can stay out of that section if I wish. Well, LL's plan doesn't give you *any* of that. Skin shops, for example. according to Blondin, will be "mature". you will still be able to "run across" them in your wanderings. For that matter, if you have a verified account, you will *still* be able to follow a landmark and wind up in a porno palace- It'll be a lot more likely now that LL will be allowing only verified account to see all the search results, and is encouraging merchants to "remove a few terms from their search description" to make their description a "mature" one rather than "adult". Adult merchants encouraged to use cute euphemisms in advertising=a lot more accidental porno trips, yes? However you feel about adult content, LL's current plan is *not* what you want, trust me. there are a *lot* of better alternatives, including my humble plan, which do what LL says they want done without a lot of the pain and agony. But LL won't listen. *that's* why we're upset- not only that they're doing it in the first place. but that they are insisting on doing it *stupid*! -V-

From: Tabliopa Underwood Yes. Thats the problem LL faces.
SL has been up and running for some years now. The numbers are in the 10s of 1,000s of regular users. Not millions. So why arent the millions, regular users of SL? What do they want that they cant get already in SL? Well, that's it, isn't it? Look at the MMORPG's. They have millions of users, but eventually everyone gets bored and moves on to the next big thing. SL has reached a plateau in its user numbers. In order to attract more users, they need to offer *more*, not *less*. More stability of the grid. More resources for a lag-free experience, better interfaces and modeling so that avatars can look better and have more detailed prim constructions. Better scripting, better building, better everything- All with a hardware base that *keeps up with demand!* Marketing a "grid in a box" software package so that people can host grid spaces for their own uses. Hooking up with other "virtual worlds" and coming up with an IP protection protocol that allows virtual goods to pass between grids- Inter-grid commerce! For crying out loud, there are so *many* things that LL could be working on, and capitalizing on their head start. Instead, they are fumbling around and trying to make the grid into a virtual theme park for the kiddies. If I was an LL shareholder, I'd try to fire the lot- and if I couldn't I'd sell the hell out and invest on a company with some *vision*. -V-
