i thought this was a "free" world? why do we have to justify ourselves to anyone? if you dont like something....dont go there!

you completely mis-interpreted what they said.

They were stating that they would rather be able to make the decision for themselves where to go instead of the almighty lindens declaring it upon us that adult stuff goes over *makes a sweeping motion with his arm pointing in some random direction* There now

Now that I think about it I may of mis-interpreted it slightly myself so if the original poster would care to reply? o.O

(completely spaced I still have hitman on pause in my DVD player... >.<;)

You're right, I'm not entirely serious.

As I've noted before, business and education already have presences in SL. The ones who aren't here yet are probably holding off because they can't think of what to do in SL rather than worrying about other people's content.

No, I wasn't around in 2006. I expect it was some sort of lascivious publicity that led to that flood? If there are any new customers from this new policy, I suspect they'll be people who read the articles about LL's cleanup, and come here not because it's safe, but because they realize there's adult material in SL.

i believe the latest flood of new residents was from the appearance of SL on CSI:NY. wikkid cool show, lascivious publicity? probably. does it matter? not really.

All of this reminds me of what happened here in America just a short while ago in the grand scheme of things. The forced relocation of people for "their own good". That was all well and good up until those in power decided that land was better suited for other purposes, and thus caused a mass upheaval on a grander scale than here, but nonetheless similar.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for protecting children, who shouldn't be here anyway, but isn't this getting a bit ridiculous? If you land on a parcel that you find objectionable, then by all means, move elsewhere. It's simple enough to do, or is that being too reasonable?

If this continues, where will it end? "hey, that guy said butt, I want him banned." That's not long in coming, I fear. Drastic censorship doesn't work, just ask those who've lived under it. I know, I ramble, but I'm a stream of consciousness typist, whatever enters my head.

But here's another post for the bonfire.

I also find it funny that most people didn't even KNOW about these extreme fetishes taking place on the grid until they were mentioned by Linden Lab. That's how quiet we are!! We keep to ourselves!! We're not trying to throw our smut in your faces! XD

I wonder how many ppl are now searching these things in SL and popping in to see them?

Dolcett and Hypocrisy
03-28-2009 08:12
From: Ryanna Enfield
Thank you. I know very well what Dolcett is. I have done my research. But what you are saying is it is okay to tell one group that you find disgusting that they shouldn't have the right to freely express themselves. Again, we are talking about in the context of SL where, no one can be physically hurt. That all parties are consenting Adults. Freedom of speech comes with things we like, and things we don't like. If you are a big proponent of freedom of speech, then you should understand that the good comes with the bad. We personally can't choose what should be free speech and what should be censored. Again, we are talking about SL, or not real life. If you are talking about freedom of speech for some and not for others, then you are blurring the lines between tolerance and intolerance.

I have to agree with Ryanna. I'm amazed that some of you don't see the hypocrisy of your judgment of Dolcett. It is a fantasy that offends you. Other people see other fantasies as offensively as you view Dolcett and you cry in outrage at their opinions because you are not offended by the same thing they are offended by. Don't get me wrong...I find Dolcett disgusting...so I avoid it, and if I were to find myself accidentally in a place where it's taking place, I'd TP right out. My being there would be MY fault since the places that have it clearly state as much in Search. If you're going to fight for only the freedom of 'offensive content' that does not offend YOU, then why bother?

As a non-native English speaker, I'd like help on some words I can't really understand concerning the whole issue.

I have read many times here Lindens repeating that "teens won't be allowed on SL, it's not scheduled, it's not a project ..etc..."

OK

I know my English is not that good but... even with the Webster in hand , i have troubles with three expressions :

-PG = parental guidance... so... it means, if i am correct, that, as an adult , I must ask my parents (my mother is 80) to go there... I see no other logical explanation because there are no teens on SL... so who are those that need parental guidance ???

I am lost ...

-Mature = old ... ok ... so this will be for "old" adults then ??? Over what age ??? 40 ?? 50 ??
Because there are no teens on SL ... by definition it is an adult game and the Lindens said many times there was no merging planned with the teen grid....

???

I am confused ....

-Adult ...... Are there adults non adult ??? Yes because it seemed to me that Lindens insisted there are no teens on SL and no merging intended... so who are the adult adults ??? 0.o

.... ok , I 'll get my Prozac.... and some aspirin.... and some lexomil too just in case ..

hehehehe ;-) too funny ;-)

I start every day with my morning gymnastic wich is divided in three steps: first brushing teeth, then shower, then a good laugh for the belly muscles about the US-american rating system.

Last week I saw here in Vienna a docu about the american rating system for hollywood films. You know, hollywood is a synonyme for americas art to teach the world pathetic emotions in the last 60 seconds of exact every film and additional an extraordinaire bullet, half-automatic weapons, blood and explosions cult, and also the US military industry holds their per each single film an endless fairy of their newest products since 100 years, but back to ratings: It is a strong, hidden, anonymous, kind of rich and o.O. as far as I understood private organisation, and a detective team worked very hard for weeks with all possible tricks to find out who is the head(s) and who is attached to this organisation, to make this docu possible.

The scandal in this is, that no one, not a single US citizen, and I bet: even no one here in this forum, even not the Lindens, knows who makes these ratings, if and how some corruption things are rolling there, and why it is a extreme hidden, secret, totaly anonymous and I think: private and not official controled organisation.

As far as I have seen they are working in a private house, park around, security at entry, and some average and very conservative people, men and women, mostly from average families, wich have no allowness to speak open about their job and wich have no allowness to out themselfs as censors, making there an income and an extra income, for creating ratings and not only that: for censoring and editing films wich are on their way to the cinema market - they do that by call...means: producers sending the fresh cutted film to them, they watch, and some days later they do just a phone-call (no papers) and telling the producers "you are rated so or so" and they give orders wich scenes and dialogs has to be edited to reach a better rating...if the producer needs to be specific rated for economical reasons, because as lower the rating as more audience a film will have.

Maybe the Lindens are inspired by that system.

So no wonder that every blockbuster is looking the same, because all are perfect designed for these rating thing, wich makes all hollywood productions surprise-free.

Bombing, shooting, yelling, rotating lights of police cars, crying, hero survives and no boobies allowed. But oscars. Hahahahahahahahahaha, I die laughing.

Obviously are explosions and bodies in pieces harmless, they are ever very welcome at the rating agency. But: no skin! Skin is evil. Genitals are ultra evil. A kiss longer than 7 seconds is ultra-ultra-mega-evil.

I found that sensational from a european view.

This works more effective than in GDR, USSR, China, etc...

The land of the free....

No wonder that Linden Lab is such a fan of ratings. They think ratings are: normal....

Global seen, they are very alone with that thinking.

I grew up with no ratings - I have not a single idea for what they could be good.

The only thing wich I find global common and wich i do accept is the 18+ thing, because it is somehow everywhere the say: from 18 on, one is not locked out from whatever.

Other ideas have no meaning for my ethics, my small portion basic moral, my philo and my logical sense.

So I agree with your point of view. It is as funny as you constructed it.

I wold say, they should move their ratings into their brown bags and throwing them out of the window.

Would be good for us all.

The biggest fun is that they do discuss with all moral honesty that President Obamas wife Michelle Obama, has a faible for arm free cocktail-costumes/dresses.

Since that we hear America yelling as loud that it echoes over the ocean right till into Vienna/Austria: "Alarm, skin-alarm, we all go blind, skin, oh god, skin, god bless our lost souls, we saw skin, the first lady has skin, naked arms, jesus, maria and josef!"

This explains not all motivations of Linden Lab, but it explains much.

Well...

Crazy. This is literal crazy. Not normal.

it is true that the "Here be Vore" warnings are honestly not even close to enough to warn a user excatly what they will be running into

Wouldn't a mature, responsible adult at least look it up? If I saw a sign saying "Here be Vore" and I didn't know what vore was...I'd google it before I entered...or if I neglected to do so and came across it, I'd be like, "Oh crap! I guess THAT is what vore is! Not for me!" and TP the hell out. Not to mention the fact that nearly every sim I visit drops a notecard on me at the entrance, long before I might see anything offensive at all. If I choose not to read the NC describing what the sim contains, then the fault for what I see is my own.

Being the ignorant Amerocentric trollop that I am I never gave any thought to this at all but my hubby pointed out this might have something to do with the 'Extreme Pornography' law passed in Britain? Any thoughts on this from across the pond? Would the British LL office be criminally liable under this law?

Hmmm. I think you may be onto something here, Moon. Reading

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extreme_pornography

...I'm hearing some familiar turns of phrase such as have been coming from Lindens of late. And this may explain why we aren't hearing clear definitions; there aren't any. It also explains the timing, since this law apparently went into effect on 26 January 2009.

As fond as I am of the UK and its people, the nanny-state government over there makes my skin crawl.

Question .. Questions ... lots of Questions...
03-28-2009 08:29
This is actually my first post ever in the forum and maybe it will be my last. I don't know yet, but reading through a part of the discussion (reading all was too much .. so please forgive me if some what I want to write has been written before) left me wondering about a few things.

First ... if we agree, that this will affect more then the stated (and by all aplyed logic - including the fact that the LL does not know what is adult - untrue) 2 - 4 % of SL ... and all have to move to one place. Is there enough place for them to relocate too? Will this continent be big enough for everybody who will have to move? Or will those who move first get land and those who came late will have to buy what is left? (and I can not even imaginve, how much this land will cost)

After all, if forced to move by a policy change, I would expect the LLs to provide everybody a place equal to the one they had or buy them out ... but remembering ToS rule 2.6 and 3.2b ... they can do what they want ... but thats another (very much needed) discussion.

And second .. I am active in Role Playing places. Not those using combat meters or those that only call themselves RP sims, but in fact are cheep combat sims of all different sorts. So in those sims everything is done by text. By colaborative story telling ... and some of those stories are very much adult .. others are not, but what is hard to find there are scripts, sexbeds .. the usual BDSM equipment. All is beeing descripbed and written ... so will now also chat be monitored for adult content? After all, everyone entering such sims gets a notcard describing everything that can be seen or heared there including a notice that states, that if somoene don't like it, they should leave.

So is there is the possibility of adult themed RP stories written together by all the participants .. will those places also be affected by this policy change? .. and how? ... And how would it be possible to monitor such activites or prevent people from hearing 'inapropirate' things?

I am starting to think about bad-word filters in everyones chat engine ... and IMs ... but I think, that this is just a orwllian exageration. Is it?

----

On the other side ... if LL want to boost buisness and the overall economics then implement asset and investment security! I am sure, that once people are sure, that the money they put into SL and their effort is secure, they will invest more!

That is something that the LL should put their effort into!

Help SL and not censor it!

Honestly I wasn't making a comment of myself. You know as well as I do theres millions of people who don't know what a search function is or even how to use google. (just visit practically any forum including this one and check how many reposts of the same issue is floating about over and over again and you will catch my meaning)
Humans are lazy creatures and a good amount of them want everything spoon fed to them. My suggestion was only such. Back on track anyway to the next one.

L-O-freakin-L

anyway I think personally that the TV/Movie ratings needs to go out the window first before we can actually approach fixing this borked system. now the multi-tag ratings (as mentioned eariler in this thread with all defaults set to PG to start with) seems to be a real good idea, so lets build on that. If we completely obliterated the current rating system that LL has in place how would we go about rating content within SL. Lets put this on a much more constructive track here and try to pull solutions out our butts instead of our torches and pitchforks (which I still have a ample supply of from the original copybot scare.... I was handing em out to people outside LibSL's building... ;)) Granted I'm reluctant to put mine down but lets give the "Lindens" something grander to consider... a ratings system that works, for the users by the users.
Discuss.

maybe to verify we should all get official adressed mail sent to the adresses we gave at signup and when we gave payment details or you could use phone back the way paypal does on a landline to confirm that the person is at that adresse many ways instead of getting a 3rd or 4th party involved one to one is the key i think to verifacation carnt be that hard for you to manually check our adresses we gave well in the uk no messing around must be diffrent in the usa i guess check we live where we have said we do that should be sufficiant.. a simple bill would prove it not insurance numbers lol come on get your thinking caps back on i know there is some lights still burning in your office drink your coffee hehe

Yup, even the R-rated Silence of the Lambs is considered acceptable viewing for minors as long as they're accompanied by a parent...!

Yes, that law is a very good example of bad law making. For instance, it is perfectly legal to sell, buy, own and view a DVD of the film Hostel (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0450278/). However, possessing a short clip of one of the more explicit scenes from that movie could put you on the sex offenders register!

I saw a study years ago somewhere that something like 80% of internet traffic was porn (this was a while ago, I'm sure that it's much lower now since music sharing is probably eating into that)... Why do you think when that came out that all the ISP's didn't run around screaming with their hair on fire and stamp out dirty images online? Why didn't every academic institution demand that all explicit sites be blocked, why did all those "clean up the internet" bills in the us congress die slow ignominious deaths? Because people realized, the naughty stuff was paying the bills. The internet exploded because most people who were paying for access were doing it to look at other people naked.

Now you are in the same boat, you are a repeat of the internet in the 1980s. People are flooding into SL, a vast majority are here for two things. One, they heard that people get rich (sound familiar). Two, they heard they can see naked people. Take away easy naked people viewing and people who want to see naked people go away, and guess what.. you aren't going to hear about people getting rich very much either.

Well spoken.

Ok, constructive critiscim here... (can't spell as I'm half-asleep)
Addressed mail can be intercepted, not to mention costly as not only would they have to mail the US userbase but pretty much the entire world as well with varying postal rates all over the world.

Landline phones seems to be a good idea however the long-distance/international costs would be prohibitive to this end.

Some bills actually have more information in them than I'm sure you want to send.... trust me on that one. Not all of em do but quite a few do have very personal information in them that is evidence of yet another archaic way to handle information.

Now, with the 2nd generation of ANI systems being around (able to read unlisted and purposefully blocked numbers) for quite some time, I think a INBOUND solution would be best in that aspect as for alot of companies its cheaper to route inbound than it is to route outbound (don't ask me why, its MaBells deal). and nobody should bring up the notion of email verification. It wont happen, to easy to fake and way too insecure.
As for me, I have webhosting with a certain company that I've been a client with for nearly a year now. I needed shell access. they required a fax of my ID front and back. I noted the number as being the same one on thier website for customer service and the extention was valid within the company, no third party service handing my information. Why did they need the ID faxed in the first place you ask? Because they were going to give me shell access. (which means internal access into thier machine that my website is hosted from and not just some web interface) technically if I was a malicious user I could simply write a script that could take them down, and several other sites as well and spread this code throughout the internet damaging millions. BUT the ID is a failsafe of sorts. first it has to match your data you registered with. (unlike SL which allows you to change your RL name at a moments notice all this data besides email address and billing address is locked upon registration unable to be changed. If you say your name is something, it better well be that. otherwise your credit card wont work for payment, they wouldn't take my ID, I wouldn't have exclusive access into my webhost box'es backend (i know how dirty that sounds so sush) and all in all I wouldn't have a website in general. I belive personally that if LL could get another type of verification medium (seeing how its illegal basically for people in the UK to provide thier personal information to another company overseas) instead of this company who is notorious for selling information to other companies (and will take any ID you throw at em as a simple google images search will prove) for something a bit more secure and internal. and not based on our id numbers and addresses.

Now. onto a possible solution besides the multi-choice filter option, (seeing how we are heading also into the realm of verification choices wich obviously should not be overlooked either) There are plenty of ways to prove ones identidy without having to pick up a pre-paid visa (which I have also proved that SL will take one labeled "John Doe" as payment information when my real name is definately not that)
I submit as a possible alternative,
http://www.veratad.com
as well as the information here that the government has made steps with this company as well infact its the U.S. Department of Justice,
http://www.allbusiness.com/government/3922531-1.html
Now granted its a system to protect children however according to thier website it is SCALABLE. and highly customizable. and might very well be a diffrrent option when it comes to age verification.

I left the UK to live in Holland where things are definitely more relaxed than the UK and even more so than the USA where for me i would say there is a far worse nanny state than the UK. However i do not believe this has anything to do with the new draconian laws the UK have introduced and go have a look at this link where you will find links to the proper bodies http://www.caan.org.uk/issues/ as we all know how reliable and correct wikipedia is lol

I think LL has finally realized what a mess it is now in after allowing all these unverifed accounts on the grid and is now taking stock and putting it right in its usual half cocked way, but as NONE of us really knows the reasons why, i for one are going to sit back and watch as the drama unfolds and then see where we will go next with the changes :) and yes i am one of those affected by the changes and i welcome them i just disagree with the forced moves for us adult content providers but i agree that all avatars should be linked to PIOF as it was pre 2006 which is all LL is saying is needed. You have to pay/verify for most other games like WoW, Guildwars and many others so why not SL, it ensures accountability for those that want to scam etc. at least they can be tracked down better with stricter verification systems and will help cut down the amount of under age players already on the grid that slipped in because of LL lax sign up process of the past.

But as is yours this is just my personal opinion :)

I left the UK to live in Holland where things are definitely more relaxed than the UK and even more so than the USA where for me i would say there is a far worse nanny state than the UK. However i do not believe this has anything to do with the new draconian laws the UK have introduced and go have a look at this link where you will find links to the proper bodies http://www.caan.org.uk/issues/ and we all know how reliable and correct wikipedia is lol

Alright, I'm a LL basher too like the rest of em but.....
*draws a line in the sand* Lets keep LL on that side and solutions on our side. Lets prove to LL we can think for ourselves without the "mob mentality" going on (granted i love being part of a mob and like I said would probally bring the torches horded over from the original copybot scare) but we NEED Answers and not more pokes and prods at the Lindens cause where does that get us? Nowhere. fast.
So lets get somewhere and freakin brainstorm already.
*side edit*
I MUST be tired... I'm tryin to be a voice of reason when I want my torch back.... I need sleep....
