Feedback on Ad Farm post

Jack sorry for adding yet another irrelevant post, but I thought it might be nice to try and help out.

Up until around page 25, there were alot of suggestions and the thread was mainly on track, after this point we all got a little out of focus and started bickering amongst each other so the proposals are a little harder to find from that point onwards.

There are still some good proposals and a few giggles to be found though if you can bare to sift through everything

This has been fun everyone, but I really think I stopped contributing myself around page 25 and its time for me to get back to RL for a bit.

Oh and because I can't help myself Luke, Robo, Elder, Cytherea and friends, I am sorry you don't see anything wrong with being, what many think is just nasty and hope over time you will develop emotions and start to care about someone or something other than yourselves.

Perhaps then you will understand the true diffence between right and wrong.

Not every action that is allowed is the right action to take.
Please think about that and it may help you in your real lives aswell as the virtual.

Two AR's actually : One while your friend the green Indian was responsible for, 5 minutes after she purchased the plot inside my property. You were there right ? No action was taken. The other one after Dr "there is no extortion" PrimHands took over the plot to continue the pshycological terrorism. I admit, i was wrong by mentioning his name, but also pretty strange that people that want to be seen all over the grid start to whine the moment you refer them name to ad-farming .. As I pointed out upthread, the Adfarming business is about as far from free market capitalism as you can get.

I just realized how bad one of the 3rd party ad network scripts really is, in terms of texture lag. It's from a pretty well-known scripter, too, so maybe it's just horribly misconfigured everywhere I encounter it. But I'd really *strongly* recommend that a condition of licensing be that the scripts, if not open source, should at least be inspected by LL development.

(I've mentioned before that I really think these should be standard-issue open source scripts, shared by all the licensees--among other reasons, to make sure the focus is on *advertising*, not ancillary shenanigans. But if an open source requirement isn't part of the licensing terms, at least LL code inspection should be.)

And soon much, much more hostile to the corporate welfare queens in the adfarm business...

Luke Termagant and many other ad-farmers like to wrap themselves in the mantle of free markets and libertarianism. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The entire ad-farm industry only exists because a series of decisions made by our in-world equivalent of a government--Linden Lab.

* Linden Lab chose to base allocation of server resources on prims rather than script usage, texture usage, etc.

* Linden Lab built a world with optional gravity, allowing for a sky full of floating ad towers.

* Linden Lab designed tier system that made it practical to own hundreds of 16m2 plots for a minimal monthly investment.

* Linden Lab decided on the minimum plot size in Second Life, and set the allocation of prims for that minimum plot size.

* Linden Lab chose to take disciplinary action against people trying to block ads from being visible from their property.

Without the specific economic and physical environment created by Linden Lab, ad-farms as we know them would be impossible. Ad-farmers exploit in structure of Second Life to exist--they are essentially subsidized by our government (Linden Lab).

They exist in the cracks in the system sucking their corporate welfare from the teat of Linden Lab. And predictably when the citizens and the government wake up and them to "get a real job", they whine. Oh, how do they whine.

A blocker when placed on your land, that does not overhang the adfarmer's land, and does not block access to the adfarmer's land is not a violation of any rules.

Ad farmers have nobody but themselves to blame. They've had their fun now let's see people handle advertising who actually care about their product and service instead of how much they can piss off the people on the neighbouring plots.

Carl, you contradict yourself several times, and proper ad farms are capitalism ... advertisers advertising businesses..it is a business model proven over and over and over in rl capitalist countries. TV magazines newspapers radio and even (OMG) the internet and computer games.
Extortion however is not valid - and it seems Lindens are taking care to not punish valid ad farms/advertisers by licencing them.

If you want your comments to be considered rational, then leaving personal abuse and illogical statements out is a good start.

And for those loosely using the term anarchy to denote "bad things" then ya might wanna look up its real meaning..not the meaning promoted by punk rockers 3 decades ago.
SL is a huge experiment in virtual anarchy.. as little rules as possible..and look how successful as a system it is.

Alright folks, I think we've expended enough ammo. I'm done with the shooting across the aisle. It's time to call a truce and let's get on with important things. Those with ad networks have work to do, and the rest of us have better things to do than to make it any harder than it already is and has been for them.

I've removed all my walls, cages, landmines, arbor probes, etc. (I hope I got them all; if any of you get hit with one or find something, let me know, and I will look again.

Now, it's time for Jack to get his lazy bum in here and either wrap this up, or extend the discussion to the next logical step.
