What's the obsession with insisting that anybody is demanding to be allowed here they don't belong?
It's like some demented securocrat fixation.
There are no hordes of barbarians/triffids that require a fence of shiny red lines to keep them out. The obsession you mention is one of your own imagination. Its not real. There is no body of people with the obsession that you imagine.

From memory, there has been only one (possibly two?) poster(s) in all of there threads who claimed some sort of right to go anywhere. I'd class them as either unreasonable or trolling.

What's the obsession with putting quotes around """""""""""""""""explorers""""""""""""""" in order to implicitly label passerbys as abusive intruders?

What's the obsession with living in a world where every stranger is assumed to be a threat?
Are your lives so sad and empty that you need to manufacture threats?
Have you been brainwashed by the negativity of TV news programs?

I'll kindly refer, nah, just take in Mickey's post which I think you didn't take the time to read. It says everything needed on this matter.

It says everything that *you* wanted to hear on this matter.

Fixed!!

It's very simple.

If you can't abide people posting contrary opinions, then don't post opinions for them to be contrary with.
If you get contrary opinions, you'll just have to live with it.

If you can't abide ban-line/access-restriction threads, then don't contribute to them.
If you can't stand to see people posting opinions that are not challenged by the sort of opinions that you want to hear, then see above.

What is the obsession with using security devices and access restrictions in a world where nothing can be taken or moved unless specific permissions are set?

Moreover, what is the purpose of restricting access to a parcel if you are not even there? I doubt anyone can use your bathroom and forget to flush while you are gone..

Shoot!

/me places soapbox on ground in front of podium, reaches into her pocket for her spectacles, and shuffles her notecards around a bit, taps the mic, and clears her throat and says:

CAUSE I JOLLY WELL CAN!!!

/me takes off spectacles, puts away notes, steps off soapbox and picks it up, and saunters off .

Well said, Maggie!

Sling, I have to respectfully disagree with you on the subject of a responsibility to others.

You're describing a "SHOULD" situation, as in "People SHOULD respect others", and on that, we agree. However, in reality, SHOULD don't count for a hill of beans.

In reality, a landowner has no responsibility to anyone else, other than to pay tier and obey the TOS. That's it.

Before I go throught this, please remember that you and I have discussed, and I agree with you, about the visual aspect of Banlines on neighbors. I feel that it is the ONLY legitimate complaint.

From: someone
I think that the majority of people who like me, wander about and explore SL do not have any expectation or concept of a "right" to go anywhere.
Sure they do! This whole air of vilifying anyone that does it, questioning and belittling their motives indicates an attitude of "What you are doing is wrong because I SHOULD (there's that word again!) be allowed to go on your land".
From: someone

My parcels have always been open. I have used eject/ban only twice in over a year.
My parcels have been open because I choose to allow it. I don't consider that anyone has a right to come on them.

Me, too. As I said, that isn't the issue.
The only thing I would change in this phrase is "I know for a fact that nobody has a right to come on them."
From: someone

I do absolutely have the option to close off my land with ban lines, uglify the neighbourhood and make things difficult for people passing through the neighbourhood.
It is true that LL allows me to do this on land that I pay for.

See, NOW you're on the right track! These are facts.
From: someone

They allow it not because this is the best way or even a good way of doing things. They allow it by default as they haven't the brain/soul/resources to amend access restriction to work in less ham-fisted and less ugly way.

This, however is an opinion.
From: someone

Label what LL allow as a "right" for want of a better term. However, I don't believe that rights come independently of responsibilities.

Again, opinion.
From: someone

We have responsibilities towards other residents. It is irresponsible to put up ban lines that affect everyone in order to lock out a small minority of abusers.

Guess what this is! Begins with an "O"....
It is not irresponsible, it is perfectly within the landowners' rights. You're trying to impose your opinion on others.
From: someone

Anyone wanting to keep known avatars out can ban those avatars.
Anyone wanting to keep people in general out can use a security orb, or a hive of bees, or a bunch of grannies with brooms. It's true that it takes a little more effort to set up a security orb, but that's where a sense of responsibility to society at large comes in.

Again, you're telling people what to do on their own land. SL has a built in security system. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's wrong.

Ricardo,

It's all good. Happens more often that I can say. S'my own fault for having a boy's nickname. Damn older siblings!

Building something cool and then not allowing anyone to see it or admire it, is like doing yourself locked in the bathroom with the lights off.. when nobody else is home

So this is the 'YOU PUNKS GET OFF MY LAWN ' thread based on the ' STAY OFF MY SEX BED' scenerio? At first I saw the Mickey eyeball and figured it was the 'BUT I REALLY WANT TO FLY OVER YOUR HOUSE AND NOT GET BLASTED OUT OF THE SKY' thread. Gonna have to go to page one and check.....
Ohhhh, a GENERIC " WHY THE HELL YOU LOCKING YOUR FAKE HOUSE" thread!
Privacy is the ability of an individual or group to seclude themselves or information about themselves and thereby reveal themselves selectively. Not easy to do when a lock isnt a lock and the population is clairvoyent and can see through walls.
I come home to find debris tossed around on occassion. You know the kind, plywood cubes, empty shoe boxes, a posestand maybe. Never anything I can use. Takes me five seconds to send this stuff back to the owner of said garbage, so I dont feel the need for locking the house when Im not around. Might I lock it when Im in there so as not to be disturbed, sure. Do I need to lock down the sky above me? No. Do I have the right to lock down the sky above me? As the owner of said property, sure. Am I being neighborly by locking down the sky above me and thus causing passing aircraft to crash and require a reboot, no. Are there any rules or regulations requiring you to be a good neighbor, no. Being a dick is free. If I tracked down and found every one of these privacy threads, could I just cut and paste all my previous posts and save some time typing? Yes. My neighbor finds herself locking down her property quite often when she is home because my voyeur lounge attracts all manners of perverts and they sometimes fly drunkingly over to her house and try to get some action with her. Am I being a bad neighbor for owning a seedy establishment that generates the wrong type of crowd that harrasses the innocent folk next door? MUAHAHAA, yes. Why is neighbor spelled like that when we all have heard the little ditty " I before E accept after C and yada yada..."? Is the yada yada actually " UNLESS THE WORD IS NEIGHBOR"? Carry on folks, nothing to see here. Just the nonsensical ramblings of some old fool!

Fair enough. Feel free - it _is_ your land (as much as land can belong to people in SL).

On behalf of people who like to roam the grid exploring, though, please, pretty please with sugar and pie on top, don't set the damn security orbs to punt people after 10 seconds. If somebody is just passing through, this isn't nearly enough time to drift past, let alone figure out what parcel you're over and speed out..

No. I'm not telling them to do anything. I'm suggesting to them that if they must keep people out, then a security orb is a much more environmentally-concious way of doing that.

The orbs are great, at least when i am slowly flying around in my airship or whizzing around in my tardis the orbs gives a countdown for me to get the heck out of dodge...

...however, this dang banlines or "buy access" or whatever which are totally invisible until you smack into them are annoying, the airship that i am in break up into about 10 different parts and lodges itself inside the land that the parcel is protecting, when the ship breaks up i end up being caught inside the banline and cant move, so i say "screw it" TP out and leave the owner to clean up the bits of my broken airship they THEY wrecked...

They payed for their rent? thats fine, i payed for my ship thats now laying scattered in 10 different peices in their parcel cause they had those red lines up that dont appear till you run into it.

As for my skybox, its just under 5000sqm with 1200 prims worth of stuff laying around, i have an Alteran Stargate which is publically accessible to the entire stargate users network on SL and i also have a stargate ring transport publically accessible from the ground up and a tardis landing pad for tardis users so they can land right onto the big park i have built infront of my land. No ban lines, no orb...if i dont want people in my house i right click the doors and choose "lock" in the edit properties. There is a new "ladies only" club opening in a club skybox about 350 feet away from me....im hopeing that a few females might fall off the entrance platform into my garden...so yeah, thats why theres no orbs...LMAOOOOOOOOO

Winter,

Awesome! I'm glad this works for you. Works for me, too.

But guess what? Neither you nor I get to tell anyone else that this is the right way to do it on their land.

What was that??? You reading and thus responding to one of my old threads?? Why am I supposed to be guessing??? Who the hell said I was debating this with you? Was my post so convoluted that you couldnt figure out that I agreed with the 'do what you want with your land' even though its unneighborly? Well, YES! It was convoluted indeed, so I will FORGIVE YOU Mr/Mrs/Ms. Mouse or whatever fuzzy thing you might be, for your unprovoked attack on my sensibilities ;) Offers you a cookie.
