From: Kaimi Kyomoon I doubt if it's easy for many gay people to see it being used without being reminded of the long history of gays being abused, persecuted, disdained and insulted.
This type of argument used to be commonly made about variations of racial slurs. I doubt those who discriminate against homosexuals see the remark without being reminded either. I know that THEY see it as a homosexual slur. And are probably encouraged by its use.

From: Okiphia Rayna If I called my black friend 'nigger' (Yes I used it, this is an example) in a loving way (If that makes sense to you...not sure how lol) he probably wouldn't be offended. But if I screamed it at him, I'd end up knocked out (I'm a wimp btw lol)
I think words have power based on their use, not based on just the word.
I have a question...... How can the "N" word be used in a "loving way"? That statement to me is really out there as well. Correct me if I'm wrong but I do not think that word can ever be used in a loveing way! IMO,To use Gay as a negitive implication is wrong. To say "one is happy and gay" is to use "gay" as it was meant to be. When it was turned into a negitive discription was when people who had problems with people being Homosexual, usually homosexual men and they started useing it negitively. When they see something they dont like it is refered as "that is or was "gay".

From: Michael Bigwig No Colette, you are wrong.
It isn't a derogatory remark...the word 'ghey' has nothing to do with a group of people. If anyone knows this, it's the "kids" you speak of...
Will you kindly not tell me what my kids know. Sometimes I wonder if you know half what you think you do.

I couldn't think of a way.. but maybe it could be incorporated into a pet name based on some inside joke or experience we shared. ANy word can be used lovingly given the situation in my opinion EDIT:: And I'm gone now, so thats the best i can give for.. 6 or 7 hours lol

I know that THEY see it as a homosexual slur. And are probably encouraged by its use. Oh give me a break...when I say the word 'ghey' in a gaming sense...I, nor my gay friends, are reminded of any sort of persecution...don't be dramatic. That's like saying the word Christian, and instantly being reminded of persecution...the word 'gay' isn't a negatively loaded word....it's just another word for homosexual...it isn't even a negative one--it's totally neutral. So why would you think about all the bad things 'gay' people have endured when using the word? Makes no sense.

Sometimes I wonder if you know half what you think you do. You think you're the only parent? Do you think you're the only one directly involved with teens? I made a general assumption that the "kids" you speak of are certainly more savvy to 'leet speak' than you or I...wouldn't you agree?

Makes no sense. The term is always used in a negative context. Consider why that is.

From: Brenda Connolly Considering the context of the original "insult" I think it is enough.
It was not. It was condescending at best. From: Brenda Connolly What else do we want him to do? go into one of those diversity reeducation programs. Donate half his salary to the group he allegedly offended? Never be allowed to work again? declare He is now an addict , go into rehab and announce he has found God? Isn't it bad enough people are persecuted in real life, and carrers ruined by one stupid slip of the tongue? None of those are necessary. A simple "sincere" apology would be sufficient. And a change in the original post would be nice.

You don't see gay people up-in-arms about ol' grammas usage do you? Same with the word 'queer' I suppose.

From: Kaimi Kyomoon There is a reason that no one here uses racial slurs in this forum. The reason is that for decades when people did use them people like me called them on it. We changed the world. As long as anyone thinks it is ok to insult and be insensitive to any group of people I will oppose it every chance I get. I will never back down. I really hate getting in the middle of this stuff, and I hate injecting this political crap into SL and the forums, but I agree 100% with Kaimi. I'd love to see how fast you hypocrites would switch sides of this debate if someone said "Jew him down" or "typical woman driver." After all, they're just words, and they don't mean anything bad about Jews or women; they're just talking about money transactions and bad driving. But since it's about gays, you could give a shit. I lost a lot of respect for several of you that I previously admired. Ironically, the person I have the most respect for is the O.P. for at least attempting to acknowledge and apologize for it. Thank you. There, I said it, and will probably severely regret it.

I made a very specific reference to my kids and their friends, thank you. And yes they are savvy that was my point. They also know its a negative homosexual reference, That was also my point. --------------- The school my kids go to is not accepting of gay people. Two teachers are openly gay, one was forced from her teaching job and given a paper pushing job. The other is the band director, who has so far managed to avoid being moved however one other band instructor transfered over it and many parents have taken their kids out of band.

Consider why that is. That's just coincidence Colette. It could have gone either way...in fact, oddly enough...it DID go both ways. Gay: happy (positive) Gay: Homosexual (neutral) Ghey: lame (negative) Gay: Homosexual (neutral) Queer: strange (neutral) Queer: gay (negative) It has meanings all over...it has nothing to do with a particular group of people. "GHEY" is it's own word...separate from a group of people. But hey...this is all my opinion. I think people just like to get all politically correct for the fun of debate and drama.

Perhaps your kids think saying "Ah, that's ghey" is a negative homosexual reference...but I'm gathering they learned that from you....being their mother. Other kids are completely aware that the word 'ghey' has zero ties to homosexuals or any other group. Each person feels differently about words I guess you have to do a little research in word origin, and make your own assumption as to what the word means in a particular context.

I'm not an "oldbie" But over the last few months, it's saddened me how mean you guys can get with each other. I mean seriously, one word or phrase can cause such a mean spirited uproar, it's so disconcerting. And at times, it makes me thankful that when I'm inworld I may be lonely, but no one is yelling at me or calling me an ass either.
