Cause someone said 'how freaking gay?'

So what? Don't be so sensitive. You're diverting from the issue here which is the shows portrayal of sl for slang someone used? C'mon, now!

This is an example of how as SL grows, the general tolerance and consideration of Residents for one another is slipping away.

Another thing that will be lost as SL becomes more mainstream.

Yes- in SL never use any slang terms relating to being gay/straight/Furry/non-furry/Gorean/Age Play/ male/female/goth/vampire/voice/non-voice/handicapped/american/
european/Mac/PC/Linux As it's bound to piss someone off somewhere. ;)

i'm sorry you missed my meaning. i was neither referring to a state of well-being (as in "cheerful, bright and gay";) nor to a sexual preference. words' meanings can shift through the course of time, sometimes taking on even more than one. in this case, i was using the word in a pretty innocuous way, to describe the quality of being so full of one's self as to not recognize one's own shortcomings-- as in the CSI episode, which was really freaking gay.

sorry to all who took offense. it was not intended.

Except that this meaning you use of the word "gay" is directly relating to slurring of homosexuals.

Basically the implication is:

Gay people are bad, they are wrong, they engage in unwholesome sexual practices; this which I am describing is wrong like someone being gay is wrong.

Its entirely possible you are not intending to slur homosexuals - because the insult is in such widespread use, people don't consider the implications any more. But it is unrealistic to say the meaning of the term has lost these connotations.

I don't really support 'gay' as an insult either, but seriously, some people need a thicker skin.
If I call someone gay, and they are gay, then surely that's a perfectly good assertion to make? =P

If you say something is crap, then that something is in fact (usually) /NOT/ crap, it just doesn't meet your expectations. But how many people are going to go around saying "Hey Jim, did you see that CSI episode last night? Aye, well it definitely did not meet MY expectations!"

Meh. Sounds like it was a fizzle, to me. I certainlty didn't see the much-feared spike in logins associated with the airing of the show. We won't be able to tell until tomorrow if the sign-ups jumped. It shows 10.2 million accounts as of midnight Wednesday night. The next couple nights stats may prove interesting.

And from the sounds of the show description, I made the right choice. I staued out of SL for the most part, and spent the evening watching an old Disney made-for-TV movie on DVD with my family, which I am sure was far more entertaining.

C'mon people. it was a stupid throwaway line, meant not to insult anyone, not even directed at a person. The poster has apologized. anyone. Everyone have some Pumpkin Pie and relax. We have to stop taking knee jerk reactions to words and look at the intent behind them.

Hey everyone...

I watched the show last night, as well as downloaded the onRez Viewer and checked out a few crime scenes.

Just before the show...the island they put me on was damn laggy. I went to the first crime scene (the Butcher shop), and it took like 30 min to rez all the textures...That would make me one slow-ass detective...luckily CSI came on as my AV stood in the Butcher shop...so I came back to it later.

It wasn't really fun. It was too slow. The voice streaming audio-instructions didn't work for me anywhere. I couldn't pick up or inspect evidence...

The design was OK...but the bugs I ran into and the lag-pool I was dog-paddling in didn't win any awards in my book.

I'm very curious, however, to see how many new-accounts there are after last night--what level of population influx did the SL teasers bring in.

I will say that the Lindens and the Sheep were partying last night...the press they got from those 'SL commercials' was astounding. SO many eyes saw that...

Not in Canada they didn't.

Unless I missed something (I do tend to doze off when sitting in front of the television), I didn't see a single promo for CSI:NY in SL.

Maybe a fellow countryman (or woman) and confirm whether or not they saw any CSI:NY/SL promos watching on their cable carriers? I'm not sure about other places but cable companies up here are notorious for "hijacking" the commercial feeds from the US networks and substituting their own promos.

Considering the context of the original "insult" I think it is enough. What else do we want him to do? go into one of those diversity reeducation programs. Donate half his salary to the group he allegedly offended? Never be allowed to work again? declare He is now an addict , go into rehab and announce he has found God? Isn't it bad enough people are persecuted in real life, and carrers ruined by one stupid slip of the tongue?

And if they all had the experience you had even IF they bothered to try it out, they have probably forgotten about Second Life already

On a more positive note, my performance last night seemed about as good as usual. :P I was worried that there would be all kinds of trouble with the asset server and whatnot, but it was pretty much business as usual.

yeah i was on during the how and didn't see any change in performance. it'll probably bring in a few new users, not as many as hoped and out of those some will stay, again, not as many as hoped.

His "appology" reads to me more like this:

"Sorry you all took this the wrong way, but the insult doesn't mean what you think it does."

he then repeats the usage, making it obvious it was no "slip of the tongue"

I don't expect anything. Just making it clear that the insult doesn't mean what he evidently thinks it does.

The whole thing is a bad idea anyway. Unless people *like* the idea of corporate America coming into SL and littering it with the BS many of us use SL to forget about. RL companies won't come here to be part of the community... they will come to take from it everything they can get.

Not happy about Linden Labs purchase of XStreet (formerly SLX) and OnRez. Will this mean LL will ban resident run online shoping outlets in favor of their own?

That's because concurrency was business as usual - I ddin't see it crack 40k before, during, or after the show.

I read somewhere that it stayed at the exact same figure of 39k-something for over 2 hours.

Meaning it was either broken and couldn't keep up - or deliberately broken to disguise the fact that only 7 new people signed up.

or that a couple thousand did sign up and kept the number up, even though at that time of night the "number logged in" normally drops by a few thousand.

Yeah. I had to pop in-world right near the end of the show's East-coast air time. Couldn't see any difference at all in performance in the few sims I went to, or concurrent logins. Which is good, as far as I am concerned.

So far, the only bad part of this for me was that I lost an evening of building time, because I stayed out of SL for the night in case it did suddenly get really laggy. I certainly didn't want to try to build at a time when the concurrent logins might suddenly double, or worse, from the normal peak load.

I suspect that most of the CSI fans won't bother with the SL tie-in activities. But only time will tell.
