What about Coprophiliacs?? :D

That would be a kink not a sexual orientation.

I think you should remove that URL from your post.

I suspect that most of the CSI fans won't bother with the SL tie-in activities. But only time will tell.
Maybe there aren't as many CSI-NY fans as there are for the original? Or perhaps those who like the show are too busy watching it to care about some video game? Who knows? :)

I read somewhere that it stayed at the exact same figure of 39k-something for over 2 hours.

Meaning it was either broken and couldn't keep up - or deliberately broken to disguise the fact that only 7 new people signed up.

Somebody posted the actual numbers taken from the SL site every 20 minutes from 10pm to Midnight Eastern. I'll ask if it's ok to re-post them here.

The "daily registrations" number for yesterday is similar to the peak back in the fall. If you look at the "logged in users" graphs (2 weeks, 24h, 48h), you'll see that apart from a small plateau around 10-11pm, the CSI episode & associated hype had essentially no impact on user logins.

I was just going to post that the real tell-tale sign would be new user registrations. It would be interesting to track this over the coming weeks since, from what I understand, this is supposed to be an ongoing "theme" in CSI:NY over the next few episodes. Maybe as a sub-plot, I'm not sure.

Someone mentioned somewhere too that the lead character was suffering from insomnia and it would be interesing to see him get "hooked" on SL during his sleepless hours.

At any rate, if it is a long term recurring part of the show, the statistics would have to be monitored long term but from the notecard Coco posted in the other thread I was given the impression that they were expecting 100-150k new accounts/logins right away.

I think what happened is that, instead of attracting CSI viewers to Second Life, the show attracted Second Life residents to CSI!

I went to one of the CSI islands, and from what I could see, the crowd there was almost entirely current residents. I met Rhaorth, and Jim Sella from OI Public, and Sarah Nerd, and saw some others I recognized. The horde of Ruths didn't materialize.

I went to X2 Exotica (trying to decide if their skins would make me look $L4,000 better), and there was a gaggle of girls hanging out at the entrance, chatting excitedly on Voice about what was going on, on the show. But they too were current residents.

The $US Spent in the Last 24 Hours doesn't show an uptick, either.

Maybe we'll see an effect over the coming weeks, but it sure wasn't the overnight flocking to SL that yesterday's "heads up" note to the Mentors implied was likely.

C'mon people. it was a stupid throwaway line, meant not to insult anyone, not even directed at a person. The poster has apologized. anyone. Everyone have some Pumpkin Pie and relax. We have to stop taking knee jerk reactions to words and look at the intent behind them.

I accept that apology and hold no grudges if he refrains from insulting my fellow humans in the future.

Perhaps it is youth that makes you think this kind of thing is ok. I'm old enough to remember a time when it was common to hear racial slurs slurs used in "stupid throwaway lines" by people who otherwise seemed polite and who probably didn't really mean to hurt anyone. And by others who were literal terrorists of members of minority groups.

It took a lot of complaining by people like me before everyone began to realize that using those words in that way was insulting, intimidating and unacceptable in decent society.

Perhaps I also remember more cases of gay people being terrorized for being gay than do very young people or people who don't follow current events. That's why I guess it is up to me to let you know that there are millions of gay people, friends and loved ones of gay people, and people who just want to live in a world where people care about the well being and feelings of others, who feel belittled and threatened when you use the word gay as if being gay is bad.

51,414 new signups bringing us to 10,309,155 signups total.
The usual sign-up rate is 17-25,000/day.

There's probably a whole bunch of people who made a new avi to try the OnRez viewer and looking at the CBS forums a few people signed up 5+ times because they never got the password e-mail.

So all in all probably only a few thousand people bothered (the slight offset in Tatueru's online graph seems to concur), I doubt anyone is celebrating :p.

Good. Maybe LL will concentrate more on bringing new residents in by focusing on SECOND LIFE... not integrating real life with it. I personally would prefer things like CSI in SL fail, rather than succeed. For me... if I want to watch CSI... I will turn the TV on. If I want to get involved in criminal investigation in SL... I would much rather do so if it were created by residents.

I think maybe that was the whole point of the exercise anyway. From reading about it in the NY Times I got the impression that the whole idea came from the producers of the tv show to infuse it with a bit of novelty.

Interesting. I went there about the time the show was ending on the east coast and everyone I right clicked on had been born that day. But come to think of it they might have all been alts of current residents. I was using the regular SL UI and if anything there was less lag than usual for me in a busy place. I thought their crime lab was very well done.

And did I mention? My main store had great sales figures yesterday! :)

Btw, I want that computer with the life-sized screen!

Not all exposure....
10-25-2007 07:39
Upon landing on the CSI island, I was impressed with what one can do with nearly unlimited prims, access to and development of world-class textures and the experienced talent of the Electric Sheep Company (ESC). My second impression was that it was form over substance. I wondered if the people who would join SL having had the CSI/SL/ESC introduction would find their Second Life world woefully disappointing and depart like a flock of, well, sheep, bleating their criticisms to the public.

Combined with what I hear is a poorly reviewed prime time television show, I’d say that the lesson learned is that not all exposure is good exposure.

I love Second Life. It is the best hobby I've ever had. I devote a lot of time to it partly because, if you want to function well in it, you deal with a steep learning curve. But like most of us, my time is limited. We go to work at first life jobs which are not hobbies, which are not as exciting as Second Life. We go to work to make nickels to buy pixels. I look at the CSI/ECA model and am reminded that my experience on SL had better be fun because it sure as hell will never be professional.

I think that maybe the people who have the most fun on SL are those for whom the substance of SL is FUN, whichever form it takes. If you search for a philosophical justification for your time on SL, your last activity may be the search for a texture of a withered bush.

As a gay man I can only assume that your first sentence meant that you were delighted with the show. The rest of your comments, however, implied it wasn't your cup of tea. I'm very confused. Certainly you are not so ignorant that you would use a term which describes who I am as a way to express your disdain for the show.

I'm sure it must have been a typo.

I thought the same thing. I thought he meant it as a compliment...it would be in my RL.

Not in Canada they didn't.

Unless I missed something (I do tend to doze off when sitting in front of the television), I didn't see a single promo for CSI:NY in SL.

Maybe a fellow countryman (or woman) and confirm whether or not they saw any CSI:NY/SL promos watching on their cable carriers? I'm not sure about other places but cable companies up here are notorious for "hijacking" the commercial feeds from the US networks and substituting their own promos.

Fellow Canadian here and no I didn't see any promos here though the episode was aired twice it seems in the week..and friends of mine reported seeing it which was nice cause they are treating me a less of a freak for being in SL. Now its more like I might be on to something so if nothing elee, the CSI thing helped make me look less like a weirdo..though come to think of it, they did portray the people behind the AVs as a bit strange..but then again the guy in the open sequence was strange dancing with the manikin..I like that they drew a parallel there between the two: Avatars and Manikins.

Anyway, I decided to clean up my office so that when the authorities need to check out my place, at least its tidy!

I was going to post pretty much the same thing. I went to one grouping of the sims with the regular viewer about midnight eastern. Of the dozen or so profiles I checked, all were created on 10/24/2007.

alright, against my better judgment, i watched it. omg, how freaking gay it was! when the killer put the virus in the police department's network and they had to shut it down, why would they have to worry about getting back up so soon. everyone knows that LL does maintenance on wednesdays, and they always take longer than they say. also, where were the SL sounds? and why were there no poseballs in the gladiator arena.

one big stupid infomercial for SL. /me shakes head...

Hey now, it's too early for the Friday thread!

My impressions: first time I've ever watched CSI:NY and I wasn't impressed. It has none of the warmth and charm of the Las Vegas show (of which I am a devoted fan.) The TV version of SL was (as TV always is) younger, thinner, better looking, cooler, smoother and sexier. For a franchise that "invents" new science on a regular basis, CSI glossed up SL in the same way they gloss up DNA matching.

I think the concurrency numbers were real and I think a LOT of people stayed away from SL last night assuming it would be a nightmare, so it was likely a wash. At one point in the Mentor group IM Robin came in and gave us a 39k figure - you would think that she, of all people, would have access to right numbers. I also know from the unusual amount of Linden interaction in Mentor IM last night that regular SL sign ups took a huge increase from people coming in through the SL front door instead of the CBS sign up. They had to bring on extra HI's last night to accomodate the rush. Watching the CSINY sims, they filled 3/4 of them consistantly (it looked like they aimed for about 10 avatars on a sim group before routing incoming traffic to the next sim group.) Most of the SL regulars were hanging out on 3 of the sim groups (which were maxed out at capacity) so it's not surprising those folks didn't see any new avatars.

Overall - it seemed a positive thing to me. And it was certainly nice to have SL media attention that wasn't focused on sex for a change....
