Overall - it seemed a positive thing to me. And it was certainly nice to have SL media attention that wasn't focused on sex for a change....
Yeah... it was focused on real life instead. :/

Not happy about Linden Labs purchase of XStreet (formerly SLX) and OnRez. Will this mean LL will ban resident run online shoping outlets in favor of their own?

On a more positive note, my performance last night seemed about as good as usual. :P I was worried that there would be all kinds of trouble with the asset server and whatnot, but it was pretty much business as usual.

The Sheep did something clever to keep the hit on the asset server as low as possible; they included the textures for Virtual CSI:NY as part of the OnRez viewer download, just as the LL viewer includes the textures for Orientation Island so that new residents don't get too discouraged right away by slow texture downloads. There was still lag on occasion because of delays in receiving the data about the prims, but all the textures (except on avatars) popped up right away.

I liked the show, but the way they portrayed that you can help solve it in SL, was strange

all the hype pre show being aired, gave one the impression that the SL residents would be interacting with the show staff, etc

as for the csi ny sims, I felt they were rather blah... the textures did not seem to jump out at me as NY, they just looked like many of the free textures I see in SL everywhere

and rumor had it (which I knew was a rumor) that the esc built a replica of NYC, HA, they had groups of sims repeated over and over and over.... which for the most part were unpopulated

I doubt they got the "flood" they expected.

all in all though it was kinda cool to see SL on TV, just wish it was more true SL
never know though, might be the stepping stone to something bigger and better

AND I want to be able to teleport someone with me like they did in game, that was cool
and I wanna rez my calling card (as it is can not even put the dang thing in a prim) blah

The $US Spent in the Last 24 Hours doesn't show an uptick, either.

CSI:NY won't cause an immediate spike in US$ spent. There is nearly nothing to buy there, though there is a small souvenir and prop shop which sells L$25 T-shirts and L$50 replicas of a few of the props used in the CSI:NY build. If there is an increase in spending, it won't happen until the new residents start to leave the CSI:NY sims and visit other parts of Second Life.

The Sheep have also created a tie-in shopping area: Fashion Avenue (Fashion to Die For). It includes a second orientation about avatar customization (the CSI:NY one is all about how to do crime solving), and stores for some well-known designers. The Simone! Design store is especially worth visiting, because it has some L$10 and L$100 bargain items.

Disclaimer: I am working for ESC as a CSI:NY greeter.

When 'our hero' was rolling his av, did anyone notice the two avs towards the bottom on the male and female sides?

Looked to me like the Luskwood Ringtail... :3

And how does one get to be an extra? Why -wouldn't- they allow furries? Something wrong with us?

Speaking as a fur myself, its the HIGH idiocy quotient in the fandom. Too much effort filtering out the soundspammers ('Yiff!') and those who dress inappropriately to an area/situation, or do not dress at all. Go hang out in FN or one of the other furry sims for a day and compare/contrast behavior to HUMAN SIMS...you won't need to ask. :)

But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

considering the late time the show is on ..

Id expect MORE accounts are made today after people get home from work, than were created after the show.

The "millions" idea of course was crazy.

And yes since less people in SL watch TV ... this probably didn't hurt the CSI viewership any. A lot of us watched it to just see how SL was involved after all.

Hey! Let's make a TV show that portrays a wildly inaccurate representation of SL - so that THOUSANDS of people will want to log on and discover that it isn't half as easy to do half of the semi-cool things they saw on the show!

Won't that be funny?

Whee.

I laughed out loud when the furry on the skateboard had a "dead link." I instantly thought, "Haha he crashed and they're actually showing it on TV!" All in all, highly improbable (just like most CSI episodes) but fun to watch!

39K online right now. Flood or trickle?

I actually looked at the stats last night just after the show aired: 10,285,000 members. At current time, there are 42k more. Is this the norm for a 12 hour period???

I went to X2 Exotica (trying to decide if their skins would make me look $L4,000 better), and there was a gaggle of girls hanging out at the entrance, chatting excitedly on Voice about what was going on, on the show. But they too were current residents.

They showed the episode at camp last night, as one of the campers was involved with the building an testing of the sims. Other than dat, I did't see any effect from the program. I really expect the effect will be long-term, not short-term.

One big plot point though-

How is it that Duan Juan23 somehow not realize Taylor was a guy and was not interested and then 5 minutes later was a woman and he was - they had the same avatar name.

Yeah! I think of all the inaccuracies, this was the biggest one. What a huuge plothole that was!

It's interesting that the main panel on www.secondlife.com is currently an ad/redirection to the CSI sims. Has been since last night. I wonder how long SL will keep that up?

Inworld currently about 42,000. Maybe a little high for this time of day, but nothing significant.

About that voice modulator...now I know the really good ones do a good job--but it certainly wouldn't sound the same between the guy that used it, and the woman. But the show made both modulations identical.

And ya...the name thing. I guess Don Juan23 was high.

Maggie, it might be just a word to you. To a lot of us, when used this way, it is a painful reminder that gays have a long history of being terrorized and that there are still a lot of people around who don't see that as a problem.

It strikes me that CSI:NY must be desperate for ratings, to make an SL game to add interest to their show. Considering that, if anyone actually DID join SL as a result of playing the CSI game, the first thing to be displaced by SL is often television

Clearly CBS must not think a lot of people will be lured away from the tube!

Or ... <say it softly> CBS may be interested in virtual worlds as an entertainment venue, and thought this would be great way of exploring their potential? Certainly the networks have the $$ to buy a virtual world company, should one be on the market ...

Doesn't CBS also have a stake in ESC? ESC is doing a Star Trek Sim, and Paramount is a CBS company so I guess there is an interest.

That's BS and you know it! Its a word...and words have meaning, sometimes POWERFUL meaning. If people with your far out views of having to tolerate everthing had prevailed years ago, it would still be acceptable to call blacks by the n-word. I heard this same crap about 'its just a word' and 'needing a thicker skin' from the flagwaving (confederate, of course) ignoramuses I lived around as a child.

There is NO excuse for intolerance of race, gender or orientation, or using words that are KNOWN to hurt other groups. Its just civilized behavior not to do it and would have taken the OP a second to choose a different word (AKA, THINK). To condone such behavior out of some misbegotten concept of 'tolerance uber alles' leads to racism, homophobia and intolerance.

I agree but disagree with you... I think that words do have alot of power, but at the same time, it *is* just a word.

The word itself in my opinion isn't hateful, and shouldn't be hurtful either, only the usage of the word.

If I called my black friend 'nigger' (Yes I used it, this is an example) in a loving way (If that makes sense to you...not sure how lol) he probably wouldn't be offended. But if I screamed it at him, I'd end up knocked out (I'm a wimp btw lol)

I think words have power based on their use, not based on just the word.

Words have as much power as we are willing to give them.

Perhaps in an idealized world that is true, or to a person of a racial grouping/orientation that never has been systematically mistreated/attacked, your belief makes sense.

To those on the receiving end of systematic abuse/seen friends, neighgbors or relatives on the receiving end of abuse, that is a HARD arguement to buy. It is not hard to drop a word that is offensive to others...failure to do so, knowing that others can/will take it wrong, indicates the person MEANT IT TO BE HURTFUL. I am not willing to give the ignorant, the hateful, free reign to spread their bile just to look 'tolerant'. I've seen the tolerance they show their victims, firsthand.

I suggest those that disagree with the OP's use, AR the post.

I believe the subject here is the CSI NY - SL ... if you want to debate semantics and meanings of words, would you mind finding somewher else to do it please?
