From: Broccoli Curry I believe the subject here is the CSI NY - SL ... if you want to debate semantics and meanings of words, would you mind finding somewher else to do it please?
Broccoli Thank you, forum monitor. The episode itself was not bad, for CSI. Typical playing fast and loose with the source material the show is famous for. Didn't see a lot of impact last night ingame and am hoping it stays that way.

From: Maklin Deckard Thank you, forum monitor. Pleasure. I have 3 years experience in moderating online game forums (across 2 games between them), and would be happy to lend a hand here. I have mentioned it in Strife's thread in the appropriate place, but nobody has gotten back to me yet. Broccoli

From: Nika Talaj It strikes me that CSI:NY must be desperate for ratings, to make an SL game to add interest to their show. Considering that, if anyone actually DID join SL as a result of playing the CSI game, the first thing to be displaced by SL is often television Clearly CBS must not think a lot of people will be lured away from the tube! Or ... <say it softly> CBS may be interested in virtual worlds as an entertainment venue, and thought this would be great way of exploring their potential? Certainly the networks have the $$ to buy a virtual world company, should one be on the market ... I think there won't be a new episode until February--and this is supposed to hold viewers' attention.

Broccoli There is a reason that no one here uses racial slurs in this forum. The reason is that for decades when people did use them people like me called them on it. We changed the world. As long as anyone thinks it is ok to insult and be insensitive to any group of people I will oppose it every chance I get. I will never back down.

From: Kaimi Kyomoon Maggie, it might be just a word to you. To a lot of us, when used this way, it is a painful reminder that gays have a long history of being terrorized and that there are still a lot of people around who don't see that as a problem. It would probably be closer to "Politically correct" the way the term was used. Since its a very commonly used association that usually gets a pass. Second Life traditionally was more tolerant than that.

I actually thought it was cute of a character but quite absurd in relation to the actual technicalities of the game. Again, another typical thing that the producers of this show do. I always thought that people who save one another onto their contact list could always specify those buddies that they don't mind knowing of their locations. Kat

From: Kaimi Kyomoon I am not ever going to give it a pass. In the UK there is a widely used negative slang term thats so common half the people who use it doesn't even know its a homosexual reference. I think thats what the OP meant to imply about what was said here. I don't think anyone is stupid enough to not know "that's gay" is a negative homosexual reference though.

For the record: The word 'gay' has been used so much online, and in gaming...that it has officially changed into it's own entity... It is now spelled, "GHEY" and it means something all on it's own...it has nothing to do with homosexuals whatsoever. Missing an important head-shot in a FPS game, and then getting bashed from behind might excite the player enough to say, "Ahhh, that f*ckin' GHEY!"... It has no closer ties to homosexuality than the word 'faggot' does when applied to a bundle of sticks. EDIT: not to mention the word 'gay' originally didn't even mean homosexual...it meant happy and carefree. And lastly, when it's used (i.e. "Ah, that's ghey!" , how can that be interpreted to be against a certain group of people? It's in it's own context...

I don't think anyone is stupid enough to not know "that's gay" is a negative homosexual reference though. Believe me there aren't many things I'd belabor like this. And unfortunately this is quite common with teenagers here in the States, too. I think most people don't want their word to be hurtful and will try to avoid mistakes that are pointed out to them. I'm not willing to give up on anyone just because they have trouble understanding the problem.

It has no closer ties to homosexuality than the word 'faggot' does when applied to a bundle of sticks. I believe it does. I believe it derived from th fact homosexuality is/was considered bad, and so people said 'that's gay' to say 'that's bad' or 'that's disgusting' Ghey is just a 'leet' or netspeak spelling of it. However,, I use/hear 'thats gay' myself, without tying it to homosexuality, just because it has become so common... so.. It isn't tied in meaning any more, but origins of that use.

I have two teens in the house and they have friends over all the time and it is used. My daughter is very much against it having several close gay friends (of both genders). The assertion that its become a neutral term with no slur involved among younger people (the ones who make up the majority of those who play those games) is simply incorrect.

I doubt if it's easy for many gay people to see it being used without being reminded of the long history of gays being abused, persecuted, disdained and insulted. This type of argument used to be commonly made about variations of racial slurs.

No Colette, you are wrong. It isn't a derogatory remark...the word 'ghey' has nothing to do with a group of people. If anyone knows this, it's the "kids" you speak of... Many many many words in history have changed, morphed, and become entirely new entities...and once an individual has fully assimilated [their] meaning...they can not be held at fault for the word's origins. Just because the word 'ghey' is used in a negative way, like, "Ah, that sucks!"...or "Lame", doesn't mean that we are referring to homosexuals as lame or stinky...it has zero to do with anybody...it's just a phrase that has come about naturally, and can now exist in a void all on its own.

I'm lumped into the group known as 'GLBT', and have many gay friends (And other orientations as well) and honestly, I see far less people having problems with it than people who speak out against it seem to know about.

From: Nika Talaj It's interesting that the main panel on www.secondlife.com is currently an ad/redirection to the CSI sims. Has been since last night. I wonder how long SL will keep that up? It's gone already now (although it seems LL messed up the flow of the page).
