It's actually a Blizzard ToS violation to buy WoW gold or to use a power leveling service. Actually, most of those are run by companies in China who pay their employees a pittance to play WoW all day, and then charge those who use their services $99 or so to level them from 1-70.
P2

You are VERY correct! Not only in WoW, but others as well. Even the Free-To-Play ones have the "power leveling". Nothing more annoying than chat spam of "PwrLvL for 500gold" shouted out every 2 minutes.

I remember a story on MSN about the industry of 'Power Leveling'. And your correct there too.

Power Leveling is the lazy mans way of playing. Might as well hire someone to play your PS3/Xbox360/Wii games for you.

In a way I must admit its interesting to see how people find an opportunity to make $$$.

time is money and money is time. Very few people have both. For those with lots of money and very little time, but desire impressive characters, they see nothing wrong with buying someone elses time to get what they want. Since to them it is more profitable to do it this way. At least in corporate america their "real life" pretty much operates on that principle. And they can prolly make back more money doing what they do best with that amount of time they didn't spend online. Then they're enjoyment return on having the powerful character is a higher ROI to them then playing lower lvls themselves. I certainly don't have the wealth to back up an attitude like that. But I don't judge those that do. And would certainly not call them lazy. Blizzard inhibits this natural order by self imposing "laws" (TOS).

Them and the telephone santizers.

Hey Conan; we here in the US can go to freecreditreport.com to get our own credit report; just curious if that works in the UK, since that website pulls from Experian, Equifax, and that one that starts with a "T".

The actual website created to dispense the free credit report required by law is www.annualcreditreport.com.

The other sites one sees advertised offer a free credit report as part of a sales pitch, and may require that you sign up for a service in order to get the report.

Just so y'all know.

I don't get why this discussion has gotten to be all philosophy and social commentary.

The real problem is LL wont give SL the same level of User Name/Password protection other online places/websites do.

I know the User Name of every single person that has posted on this thread. So all I would need is to figure out your passwords.

That's where user responsibility comes in. The reason this thread has descended into anarchy is because it was over within a couple of pages. The OP logged on at an internet cafe, thus failing to observe basic security proceedures. It's LL's job to make sure their databases are not vulnuerable to hacking - it is not their job to police us for being lax with our passwords. If you figure out my password, I'll deserve it for picking a stupid easy password and it will be my fault, not LL's. You won't figure it out though.

What part of LL having a system that is inherently easier to crack than most other pay-over-the-net systems is the User's responsibility?

The fact that someone knows your User Name makes it a whole order of magnitude easier.

Since obviously the challenge of getting both a unknown User Name and Password is multiplied logarithmically.

Also there is no reason other than laziness to keep your credit card around able to make purchases on a whim. Most places do not do this unless you specifically set things up that way.

It would be much safer if for example you had to re-enter payment info every time you bought Lindens, every time you agreed to a new tier level, etc.

The Blank Check approach they have now should be an option only ... Not the rule for everyone who has purchased anything in SL.

oh and Bliz sells the Game and then charges you a monthly fee for the privilege of using it. How is that any different than buying land/paying tier other than terminology? You can have a landless av with as much stuff as you can carry for FREE on SL as long as you like. How far do you get for free on WoW? A 30 day trial I think?

The difference is in the ammounts.

If I knew your password in SL, I could run up your CC to its limit easily.

If I knew your (hidden) User name and Password in WoW I couldnt buy much other than a years subscription for you.

But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

I would assume CD is a Certificate of Deposit and this is a tool for currency speculation. You buy CD's at a set rate and earn interest on them while they remain on deposit. You can then exchange them for the nominated currency. A few internet banks are offering them.

wow this has gone on a bit, anyway what a shit weekend with no elecy, i know there was some not so nice replies here, i hope those people experience this, and have all there info stolen and used against them, to the kool ppl, take ur bank details offline ASAP and use paypal instead.

my bank is taking this very seriously and LL is getting investigated for not replying or contacting me, and blatently just "dissabling" my other (main) account without any notice. it makes them look so suspicious

I don't even know why I'm posting this as we really have very little clue as to what happened to Chaos, and I'm quite sure he doesn't know, or is unable to communicate it coherently.

First, if the "fraud" was used to purchase Lindens through SL, then using PayPal would have no effect. When you use PayPal as a payment method in SL, it creates a billing agreement. When you go to buy Lindens, the PayPal account is billed automatically. This is one of the only instances when you do not have to log in to your PayPal account to make the purchase. It happens because you allow LL to debit your account.

I won't experience this, because this whole mess has reminded me to take responsibility for my stuff and change my passwords to all my SL accounts and even my email addresses. I will tell you, unequivocably, that I will (almost certainly) not suffer what you have.

God, I deal with this stuff all weekend....why am I posting on this today? Just trying to help I guess. This is an issue, in all probability, where Chaos didn't use good sense on the internet. If someone gets my password, it's not LL fault. Just as if, someone steals my credit card and uses it to buy gas, it's not the gas stations fault (if it's used at the pump.)

Once again, don't use the same passwords on multiple accounts, especially anything financial. Change your passwords regularly. Use virus protection, and spyware/malware protection on your computers. Don't check your remember passwords. And, apparently, stay out of those nasty internet cafes....lol.

Or you can just hope for the best and bitch when your ass gets chewed up.

Oh my God!! Yvaine Dreamscape stole my post....or my login...probably all my money!! And LL let it happen!! In fact, Yvaine is probably a Linden!!! I"m sure of it!! You can be sure of my sureness by the sheer amount of exclamations!!!!!

I did that post!! *points up*

I DID THAT POST!!!

Oh.....wait....nevermind. Umm.....Yvaine is one of my alts.......and I forgot I was logged in as her.

I still better check my bank account, as I don't trust myself one bit. Or I could be a Linden stealing from myself for the cause.

The part where the user doesn't broadcast their password to the world by logging on at cyber cafés.

But still, somehow wouldn't be surprised if Chaos had such things taped to his screen.

Chaos wrote that he had a 19-character password. NO one is going to break that unless they have a Cray. But he posted that he logged in in internet cafés. Dumb. This isn't about LL's security. Had Chaos had a username that wasn't his avatar name, the same result would have occurred.

Practice safe surfing.

Can still be hacked if you piss someone off enough..and Chaos seems to have a talent in that market, you have to admit. Plenty of people in this world would be willing to spend the days needed to crack a 19 character true random password. Not that it IS true random, but even then.

And hey, internet cafe's are where all the cool spies in the movies use their laptops to get quick super-secret information! Of course they're safe!

My password is the third character of the first person I ever met in Everquest 1, followed by my favorite number and its square root. I throw in a capital a lot of the time just for fun.

And lesse..your motto is
