dont give LL your credit card or bank account details UNDER ANY CERCUMSTANCES!
earlier today the cash machine ate my card, so i naturally called the bank for them 2 tell me that my bank account has been emptied out and i have been left in lots of debt, they said they wil not charge me and refund me what has been taken until the issue is resolved

the fraud team told me that the company "SecondLife" has debited quite a substantial amount (well actually every fukin penny) out of my bank account.

what a gr8 company, SL never works, its allways laggy and half the time is offline and now it has taken every penny i have and i cant pay the bills

Sn*wfl*ke please contact me ASAP if u read this as i will have 2 pay u on Paypal as i am not using SL's L$ purchase anymore, not after 2day.

If this is actually a case of Linden Labs taking money from your account without authorization, and Linden Labs cannot resolve the issue upon your report, then contact your state's attorney general's office. They all have cybercrime units now. Report it there.

But you don't have anything to report until you've tried to resolve it with Linden Labs and they have had a reasonable chance (at least a business day) to respond.

Get off your ass and don't "guess" at what they are going to say. they take this kind of fraud very seriously. I had a friend whose pw got stolen and they do their best to help track it down. You can be a cynic, or you can get your money back. God knows what other information they got from you.

Sorry to hear this happened to you, Chaos. I hope you get it resolved and your money back without having to pay for any overdraft or other bank fees :(.

---

Maybe not the time, but what I love about my bank is that they let me create a unique credit card number for every online purchase.

The generated number is limited in both time (you pick the expiration date) and by amount (you specific the maximum amount that can be charged) and once the number is used it's locked to that specific cc processor which makes it useless when stolen and at no time does my actual credit card number have to go online.

For SL specifically, I just create a new number each time I want to buy some L$ with the amount I'm buying for and update my payment info. If LL were to charge any kind of fee or have their billing go haywire, it would just be refused since I close the number after it's been used.

You might want to ask your bank if they offer a similar service, and if not, find a credit card issuer that does once you get the current situation resolved.

Some credit cards do this also. My Citibank card would let me create unique virtual numbers that were similiar in that I could specify them for one use or for a length of time.

The problem I ran in to was that I would remove old numbers and add new ones to my Paypal account to be used with things that interfaced with paypal, but didn't take charge cards directly. After a few add/deletes on the paypal account, paypal locked my account for possible fraudulent use. Their fraud department considers constantly changing the cards associated with your account to be a red-flag.

More likely he downloaded something that stole his password. Despite all the crap they get around here, Lindens take this stuff pretty seriously.

I'm too lazy to check if you can extend the expiration after your created it, but I know you can always increase the amount.

If PayPal flags you for putting in different numbers all the time you could just put in a number with a relatively long expiration date and just increase the amount limit as needed?

PayPal actually has a plug-in which does this as well...generates temporary credit card numbers which attach to your regular account.

I'm not sure I've ever not had cash in my account from L$ sales to cover my tier so I don't know, but wouldn't the transaction be labeled as Linden Lab and not Second Life? Choas you should get the transaction details and compare it against one you know was legit, from your own records or anyone else's. Sorry to hear about your trouble. I hope you're able to get it resolved quickly.

I think we can all pretty much agree that LL didn't just go and empty your account because they wanted some cash or just felt like it. The most likely is that you were hacked in some way and someone got access to your account. It isn't any of my business but if you don't mind how much was taken out? How much have you spent, lindens bought, and all that good stuff? If you went to purchase something but didn't have enough Lindens did buy more on that screen that pops up telling you that you need more?

By the way, this is the reason I use a prepaid card for things such as SL. I put a certian amount on it and that is all that can be spent and it is always never anymore than I will spend that month on fees and in world if I need to.

Contact LL immediately. A good friend I have come to know in the time I have been here shared her story with me about unauthorized charges against her account and LL resolved the whole thing very quickly as someone else was using her account info.

Linden Lab are very good at handling this situation. Probably much better than they need to be.

I suspect that there are hack bots that are applying a list of obvious passwords to everybodies accounts. So if you've got a common password like 'ABCDEFG' then I suggest you change it.

I would just love to know what Chaos's password was. ;)

hmmmm That's odd. They don't bill mine as SECONDLIFE.COM
They bill it as "LINDEN LAB SAN FRANCISCO CA"

Sounds like you have someone else billing your credit card.

No, it's them. If they weren't getting my money, I wouldn't continue to have my account.

It's possible they have different billing centers for different parts of the country and/or world.

Or it's a possible billing difference between credit cards. Maybe one lists the trade name, or the dba name, or the actual corporation name.
