I think we can all pretty much agree that LL didn't just go and empty your account because they wanted some cash or just felt like it. The most likely is that you were hacked in some way and someone got access to your account. It isn't any of my business but if you don't mind how much was taken out? How much have you spent, lindens bought, and all that good stuff? If you went to purchase something but didn't have enough Lindens did buy more on that screen that pops up telling you that you need more?

By the way, this is the reason I use a prepaid card for things such as SL. I put a certian amount on it and that is all that can be spent and it is always never anymore than I will spend that month on fees and in world if I need to.

Contact LL immediately. A good friend I have come to know in the time I have been here shared her story with me about unauthorized charges against her account and LL resolved the whole thing very quickly as someone else was using her account info.

im with Landon, i also use a prepaid. so if it is hacked they only get whats left on the card, which after fees and stuff isn't much. and my statement always say Linden Lab, San Francisco. Chaos, you got some good advice, i hope you heed it, and aren't using this as a way to incite and unneeded panic. and i do believe Matteo was referring to those surveys that gum up your email account with spam, one of them could have had a keylogger virus in it.

I knew this kind of thing was going to start happening.

This is really terrible.:(

The FBI has a cybercrime outfit that investigates stuff like this too.
If it lists as "Second Life," as the culprit, then it either a inside job, or SL itself is being hacked, not just you.

Is it time to remove credit card info?

You don't waste time with support tickets for something like this, you contact LL direct on the telephone, and you speak directly to them about what can be done. Waiting for a a reply to a support ticket rather than calling them immediately is irresponsible. And don't come back with that you have to pay for the call, what's £2 compared to all your money lost?

well my password was something unhackable and had a load of odd characters in it, it was 16 digits long aswell no1 would ever guess it.

If it was a keylogger, they could find out, but that does not explain why it says "Second Life" took the money

The bank should be able to tell you if the Second life they show is the same as other normal Second Life payments

could be a "mask" of some sort. does not mean SL or LL took the money. it could be someone who took it while in world too. i'm not a techie, so maybe someone else can give a more deeper answer.

Culprit logs in, buys linden for all of Chaos' money, sends it to an alt, cashes out?

The bank will be able to tell if it really went to Second Life.

agrees, but Hyacinths answer is the more likely scenario.

Cashes out on what exchange the chinafarmer express?

LL better own up and take FULL responsibility.

But seriously...we know how clownish LL is. It could turn out the User accounts/CC databases were hacked. With LL we can't just assume it's a keylogger.

LL cannot take responsibility if the resident WILLINGLY opens the door for the hack. although some of those surveys could be legit, they can and have been used to send viruses via your email account. as long as chaos reports it they can do something about it. and in the future i advise not opening email from someone or company you don't know. i am in no way implying that Chaos is at fault, at least i hope i'm not coming across that way, but a good majority of hacks are preventable.

Of course they are responsible---they have this thing called the Linden and this thing called a Linden exchange.

again. LL is not responsible if the person sits on their ass and bitches about it. Chaos needs to call LL directly, tell them what happened so it can be dealt with accordingly. if it were me the last place i'd come is the forums, i would be too busy on the phone with my bank and LL finding out what happened.

I am not going to sit and wait to find out whether its a Keylogger targeting Chaos or a Hack of SL.

I deleted my payment info. Whatever happens happens.

A very good protection against bank / credit-card fraude , is to use a virtual credit-card. You will have to fund the card using your own cc or bank-account, so if the data gets stolen, only the amount you have put on it, is at risk.

I personally use Wirecard, its accepted as a normal MasterCard, and they have an office in SL aswell

There are a few more, but i dont know their names atm ?

You could also have a savings/salary account and a separate card account, which is how I do it. I transfer money over to the card when I need to, or keep a certain amount on it, but in these days of phishing, ATM trapping and whatnot I'd rather not keep all of my money vulnerable on a magnetic slide card :(.

No in the UK its called SecondLife, unfortunatly im in the UK so we dont have good things like citibank, when it comes 2 banks we are waaay behind the times.

Not sure if it's the same company or not, or if they offer the same virtual card service, but I'll be looking into it. GIYF.

Simple question: what does your transaction history say ?

If someone hacked your account, surely they would have changed your password so that you couldn't come back and delete your payment info. Any L$ transfers would also show up in your transaction history, making them easy to trace.

Does it seem odd to anyone else that all this drama always happens to Chaos? From SL breaking his modem to any number of things he has listed since he has been here to this.
Yeah, I am pissing in the punch bowl, but from this poster, I believe about half of what he posts, and that is taken with a grain of salt.

My first thought when I saw his post. Last week we had "No one in the UK can get into SL" (surprisingly a couple of days after "SL broke my router" - wonder why he couldn't get on?), this week LL are looting everyone's bank accounts. What next, sculpties cause global warming?

No, sculpties make you go blind, esp. when they're your sculptie genitals and you play with them too much. Or so I've heard.

Could be a case of the boy who cried wolf - Chaos does get a little melodramatic about things, but if he's not exaggerating this time, y'all are gonna get eaten by wolves.

Whenever possible, it's a good idea to use a credit card that has fraud protection and can reverse the charges if someone tries to rip you off. MUCH better than having a direct link to your bank account that someone can empty. I know that some folks don't have that option, but if you do, use it.

but when i asked a linden in-world they told me "Im sorry but you have to file a support ticket, i cannot help" 2 wich i told them i've filed a bloody support ticket, well i've filed 11 infact, 1 for each time i get asked 2 file one

Most in-world Lindens can't help much. I would suspect very few have any access to that information, and many work remote. When it doubt *call* support ASAP.

it might only be £2, but its not £2 as its a premium rate long distance call, wich is £85 (or at least it was 4 months ago when i called them) and weather its £2 or £85 or whatever its money i no longer have, and i now have access 2 NO MONEY at all, i am now overdrawn by more than £450!!! and i only get 100 a week for my work

no more using LL to but lindens, its a bad idea and they still havnt replied 2 my damn support ticket, oh well time 4 another 1 i guess
