it might only be £2, but its not £2 as its a premium rate long distance call, wich is £85 (or at least it was 4 months ago when i called them) and weather its £2 or £85 or whatever its money i no longer have, and i now have access 2 NO MONEY at all, i am now overdrawn by more than £450!!! and i only get 100 a week for my work

no more using LL to but lindens, its a bad idea and they still havnt replied 2 my damn support ticket, oh well time 4 another 1 i guess

then get a friend to pay for the call and owe them. If you had your wallet stolen, you wouldn't be cancelling your cards by email, would you?

If this is the apocalypse like you are suggesting, I'm surprised you haven't followed the advice given earlier in the thread and found some way of getting on the phone.

if there are charges on your account your bank will most times hold the payment if you see charges that are not yours unless you wait too long..mine if i have charges i did not make and they show on my account the hold them until the situation is resolved..if not get a new bank..

Sorry but a little incredulous here. You only make £100 a week which is the equivalent of $197 and you can afford to eat, pay bills AND dump money into a game? You have just pretty much well told everyone that you are young and living at home.

Haven't other non-North American Residents used Skype to make support calls? No long distance charges...

Chaos, I think you can use Skype to contact Linden Lab as well as telephone- save costs.

Does it seem odd to anyone else that all this drama always happens to Chaos? From SL breaking his modem to any number of things he has listed since he has been here to this.
Yeah, I am pissing in the punch bowl, but from this poster, I believe about half of what he posts, and that is taken with a grain of salt.

LOL Chris - my thoughts exactly - the first thing that came to my mind was DisSention!
However, one good thing that comes from this thread is how everyone else protects their online money. I only have a Discover card and LL won't work with those. I now see that the pre-paid card is the way to go. I'm going that way. Better safe than hating on yourself when something like this does/can/and eventually very well might happen.

Mac users are just as vulnerable to trojans as Windows users. There just haven't been many of them yet. They do exist.

From: Wired News
The OS X Trojan, which infects a computer after a user chooses to download a proprietary codec, hijacks the infected computer's DNS settings. Internet-connected applications use DNS settings to figure out how to translate URLs, such as Wired.com, into the physical address of a server, according to Intego's alert . By hijacking the DNS, the Trojan is able to redirect visits to sites such as banks, eBay and PayPal to fake websites that attempt to harvest user's logins and passwords to commit financial fraud.

I use a debit card instead of a credit card for any kind of on-line transaction where the account info is kept on file. Go to the bank and ask for a $100 gift card (or whatever denomination you need) it costs a couple of dollars for the card but at least if its hacked you're not out all your cash.

And by the way, I've been in SL more this week than I've been away. Ive probably spent about $25,000L on merchandise. Except for a log in issue one morning for a while and working around restarts, SL has run very well for me.

I thought there was a 800 number or a number you can call if you live outside of the U.S. that is a free call, or used to be. Things change so much around here maybe that too.

hmmmm That's odd. They don't bill mine as SECONDLIFE.COM
They bill it as "LINDEN LAB SAN FRANCISCO CA"

Sounds like you have someone else billing your credit card.
And my Paypal transactions show as Linden Research, Inc. Not much consistency there.

No, having read many of his posts before, I don't find this one at all odd or surprising. Seeing that there's not general outrage from all SL users in the UK, I find it pretty hard (bordering on impossible) to believe that this is LL doing something nefarious.

I'd happily bet some L$ that his LindeX history shows him doing a number of L$ buys followed by several denied buys and that his transaction history shows him transfering L$ to some resident that was registered in the last few days but no longer shows up in search. I'd also be willing to do a sizable wager that he has 'special' software on his computer or that he let somebody uses his PC. Possibly a younger brother.

Cobblers! Cahoot, which is owned by Abbey National does a credit card like the Citibank one...you have it on your PC desktop and it changes the details each time. Hubby and I have our joint account with Cahoot so I know about it.

Stop putting your own country down, please! Good old Blighty! ;)

I have several UK friends who are regular SL Residents and have had no problems like this.
I think he's just been very unlucky.

In UK it is best to use CC rather than Debit Card.
It is due to UK Consumer Protection laws. More consumer protection with a CC.
Ask your bank if in UK.

im with Landon, i also use a prepaid. so if it is hacked they only get whats left on the card, which after fees and stuff isn't much. and my statement always say Linden Lab, San Francisco. Chaos, you got some good advice, i hope you heed it, and aren't using this as a way to incite and unneeded panic. and i do believe Matteo was referring to those surveys that gum up your email account with spam, one of them could have had a keylogger virus in it.

Dumb question here, but where do you get prepaid credit cards? Any links to a website or info would be appreciated. Thanks :)

you may also try your local Walgreens, Radio Shack, Osco Drug, Walmart, it's the way to go. and yes they do have fraud protection.
it's worth it in the end.

I don't know where their call center is located, but last three times I have called the LL support number, from California, the reps sound completely UKEnglishBritish, with no hint of any other accents so i have assumed I am calling UK. There has to be a way to call them from the UK.

Chaos, please post again and tell us what your bank says and what LL says once you contact them.

There is a way to call them from the UK. It's just not toll-free. And given that LL is a US company, there's no reason for them to provide international toll-free numbers.

There are also multitudinous ways of calling abroad cheaply. A simple calling card being one - calls to the US will be 3 or 4p a minute. An eighty quid bill is by no means necessary, and having said that, rather unlikely anyway. British Telecom isn't the cheapest , but even so, to spend that amount would require being on the phone to LL for a good number of hours. Like a whole day.
