Let's see Rock Star Games, the makers of GTA are big campaign contributers of Congressman Kirk's, right?

And this is EXACTLY where LL has gone wrong. Rock Star buys it's own politicians, MySpace, owned by FOX has no problems because Fox owns politicians. Congresspeople like Kirk support whatever is best for them. Throw enough money at him and he's likely to introduce a bill that gives federal subsidy money to content creators in SL. Dang ol' Rosedale needs to leave the LL compound and start throwing dough at some politicians so they stay off his back.

I hear Dianne Feinstein is up for bid, and she's from his area. He might be able to pick her up for a good price and she's got a lot of pull. She'd be a great value.

Silly! This is the USA! Parents dont have to take responsibility for their kids as long as they find a convenient scapegoat. :p

I use the teachers and clergy back up. Always seems to work.

Meh with the attention span of most Fox viewers this will have already been forgotten - this thread has probably lasted longer.

Anyway Fox is the Jerry Springer of the news world - everyone knows that!!

Know what? I actually find the senator's proposal to be somewhat reasonable. The first thing he proposes is an awareness campaign for parents. This makes sense as long as it also includes other sites with such potential, such as chat rooms, myspace IRC etc. Raising awareness of potential issues to parents is good because it helps them make informed decisions to monitor what kinds of sites and content their children access- something increasingly difficult as new technologies arise.

Secondly, I will think that if anything, this will help SL. It could raise curiosity (and curious people are SL's main demographic) enough for more people to try SL. And who knows, they may find something they like about it.

I myself was brought to SL after hearing a negative article about how Anshe Chung was griefed. I thought to myself, "If you can do stuff like this, what sort of constructive things are possible?" Then a newb was born :D

all you just did was rationalize lazy parenting. it's not the media or SL's fault. accept it and quit blaming everyone else for bad parenting.

I don't understand how you got this from what I said. I'm totally in agreement with you in terms of parental responsibility.

My point was about how perception in manipulated for agendas that have little to do with reality.

My personal position is that I would like to see more positive press about what SL has to offer to counter the spin.

I never watch any RL new items related to SL for the most part, but i am curious. What does LL do to counter these hatchet jobs. People here get indignat and voice their support of the good in SL, but are the Providers doing anything to keep the tarnish off of THEIR product?

The media doesn't wreck people's lives...people just wreck their own because they choose to believe everything they see on TV instead of thinking for themselves.

sorry i happen t believe that there comes a certain amount of responsability with what gets shown on tv..i mean they talk about influencing children..chances are the majority of people grew up with tv's in their homes as kids and did not learn until a later age that omg you mean they can just jump on the news and say this just in splatter pictures of a possible suspect of a murder..go over every bad thing he did in his whole life and then leave out that he may be innocent.

yes people should use their own judgment and realize that they are just trying to get a story out before any other station..but to say it doesn't wreck peoples lives that get plasterd on all news stations..well thats not true..it's the fact that everyone gets the misinformation on this person and makes them an outcast hence wrecking their life because the majority do believe what they read and see..Just look at the browns chicken murders in illinois when they had the wrong man..he had to move to california because he could not get a job because nobody wanted to hire a mass murderer that never killed anyone hehehe

/me points to a couple non-US news outlets -- Sky News and Report Mainz -- and their coverage on 'asexual ageplay'

WHile the states have got a majority of bad news like this, and I suspect we have educated the world on tabloid juournalism, it is not only a U.S. thing.

yes i am sure it is bad all over..i guess i am just so disapointed in the way things are reported ..some of those people i just don't konw how they sleep at night..maybe they don't lol

Boggles the mind doesn't it that LL doesn't seem to do anything to counter the inaccurate and crappy press. There is so much more in SL than what is reaching the media...I do like the documentary Grayson did..sorry don't have link.

Maybe it will be like Star Trek..SL will get canceled and the fans will rise up.

But then we'd have to dress up like Lindens and go to Conventions?

TV is driven by money just like any other product. I have never yet seen a TV that did not come with a way to turn it off.

People should have enough common sense to know that they should not believe everything they see on TV. Just as I know that when you say "everyone gets the misinformation on this person" that you truly do not mean "everyone" you mean "those who watched the program and allowed themselves to be blindly led without getting their facts straight."

Personally I don't know anything about the chicken murders so I know you can't include "everyone" in your analogy.

The one thing I worry about is how to protect children from the likes of Fox News and Congressman Idiot here.. How do we teach them critical thinking so they can tell the difference between real news and tabloid fodder aimed at getting publicity or ratings?

I do think parents have a responsibility to monitor the online activities of their children. More importantly they have to teach these children to grow up to be responsible adults that are not swayed by fear mongering and badly researched stories.

i'll Rephrase my mistake hehehe..Majority..Yes in a perfect world it would be everyone turning them off and knowing there is another side to the story but thats not the case in the real world..The reality is that the majority of people do believe what they read and believe in Stereotypes and that the people on Jerry springer are for real and the WWF wrestling is not fake..
We both agree that it should be turned off and people should use their own minds to come to a decision.. In this imperfect world things don't work like they do in the movies and the star gets up to turn it off..
It's not the media itself that commits the act but it is the source of where we first hear it from..Shouldn't there be some responsibility to tell facts after being as informed as you can be instead of lead to the direction they want people to lean?I mean they really didn't go into alot of the other things sl has that are good in it or that kids are not even allowed in the adult grid or that SL is working to try and get an age verification that works..It is a very manipulative report..sure sl has those things in parts of it..I just see FOX backing another Republican to get something passed they agree with..

yes people should be responsible and not judge others until there is a judgment made..
We both know thats not gonna happen no matter how how perfect we wish the world would be..The fact is this thread would not exist if someone did not feel there was a big influence by the media to hurt secondlife right now..All SL needs now is the mom groups like M.A.D.D. or something similar going against them..With secondlife wanting to attract corporations and getting the snuff from the corporate side of the parties in government i think we may see something bad come from this. It's not some german couple getting tattled on that gets childs play taken out..It's election year in America and the last thing people in sl want is a bunch of politicians on tv trying to kill their favorite past time for a few votes..
lets just hope people go to the site like they should and read for themselves about the good things..who's taking bets they will do the right thing??

Dear Congressman Kirk,

Please do something about Antarctica. The attached url leads to a very troubling story. Apparently, the Antarctic has rape rooms. Even worse, innocent penguins are being molested by degenerate fur seals, which are not true seals at all, but sea lion poseurs. This is an outrage, and must be stopped immediately. Not the posing as seals part, but the molesting. That really needs to end.

Keep up the good work with internet smut, especially in Second Life. You're doing a heck of a job with that.

You're doing a heck of a job, Brownie - I mean Kirkie!

This part of the story disturbs me most of all:
"It may have wanted to eat [the penguin] and half-way through the chase changed its mind," de Bruyn speculated. "I personally believe the link between aggressive and sexual behavior is evolutionarily far closer linked than we currently believe. This has obvious implications for humans."

Good thing I don't believe anything Fox News reports anymore, or I'd really be scared.

Umm...she's a Democratic senator from California and he's a Republican member of the House of Representatives from Illinois. Which area do they have in common exactly?
edit: Oh! you mean Feinstein and Phil.
