From: Kelli May So he wants to keep kids from accessing SL? *shrugs* same here. Same here too but it's far easier for kids to use google to find objectionable material, they don't even need to signup to many sites, just click a box. Highlighting that the main grid is an adult environment is good, it should be accompanied by an explanation that there is a teen safe area of Second Life that is an excellent example to sites like myspace and facebook.

It's pretty annoying how the news did that.
But now I can't wait until I'm talking to someone about SL and they're like. "Hey, that's that game where they exploit children! What are you doing there!?" I truely can't wait so I can tell them how stupid the media is and what SL is really like. (I've done it with other games and things.)
Why doesn't anyone advertise Teen SL...?

Why doesn't anyone advertise Teen SL...? By advertising Teen SL, they'd be defeating the purpose of their stories.. which is to enrage a certain segment of the population into their 'Protect the children' battle cries. It's just as well my mom and dad are into motorcycles and what not. They've even joined a 'club.' This means they can't tell me SL is bad for me

This *isn't* about news, actually protecting children, or anything up the sort. It's about whipping up false hysteria, whether it's to sell advertising (keep the number of viewers up!) or promote election (Kirk is up for re-relection, after all). Mari

From: Conan Godwin So far, this is the most "Fair & Balanced" reporting I've ever seen from Fox. No worse than usual anyway. From: Puppet Shepherd Okay, I'll admit it - I used to take FOX News seriously. I knew they were a bit unbalanced, but I figured that underneath the spin, the truth could be found. But this story? "A new website"? "nearly 13 million users visited every day"? Shoddy research, which is completely unacceptable for a major news agency - your average high school student could write a more accurate report without even having to go into SL. Entirely propaganda from the congressman whose view is being supported here.
I guess I'll be having to go elsewhere for my news, since who knows what else they aren't researching at all before they report it? PBS news shows and BBC America News come closer to decent journalism than any of the commercial organizations.

There is only one thing that I think is absolutely hilarious about the story. I can understand a senator being stupid enough but how is it the reporter, editors and newsroom staff, who do use the internet, all miss that SL IS NOT A WEBSITE!
It is an application, that after signing up and stating that you are of legal age, you download and install.
There is one hell of a lot more to worry about in this world and country then this "website". So congress is worried about this, when gas and food prices are hurting a significant portion of the country, troops are being killed daily, we are slipping into what is looking like a really bad depression, people are dying here because they have no health insurance, children are raped and murdered in RL in communities around the nation.
Disgusting, makes you want to vote another politician out of office, but the replacement wouldn't be any better.

That was, I note, underscored by the footage of a n00b walking on the current Orientation Island. If it were a serious, real enws story, I'd take them to task for such a error. This is Fox News, however.

If the media knew just how counterproductive they are in little videos and attentions like this..now they probably sparked interest in every teenager that has a tv or cell phone and internet access and every horndog that wants them..Channels like FOX news and CNN and really any news station in america are the worst sources of information in the world.. step outside of american and it's a whole new story..you have to love a country that says innocent until proven guilty..the media with no facts just a source like the turd from illinois keeps it at guilty until proven innocent?but then if you end up being innocent the public never hears about it because it just doesn't sell as well as something bad..
they wreck peoples lives on a whim all the time without blinking an eye..because people thirve on shock tv and the media goes overboard giving the fix. it would be nice if the world stopped to smell the flowers instead of slowed down to look at a car accident..to really see the good things in the world instead of hooked on the bad..it would take away the hold of all these reality shows and crap information we have on tv..but that will never happen ..just wishful thinking i guess..thats why i don't watch tv anymore.. there is enough clutter already without it..

Pernicious, ill-researched gutter press/media is not an exclusively American preserve.

WHile the states have got a majority of bad news like this, and I suspect we have educated the world on tabloid juournalism, it is not only a U.S. thing. Well Sky and Fox are part of the same family. British tabloid newspapers are quite possibly the worst form of tabloid journalism anywhere in the world, American newspapers I've found to generally be of more integrity.

There are a few tabloids also owned by News Corporation (Sky, Fox, et al.) as well. The name of the company should tell people what they need to know, it is a corporation which generates "news" LOL.

From: Peggy Paperdoll I watched the video and didn't hear a thing that was not true. As I told a friend yesterday about a situation I've had to deal with inworld, a lie of omission is still a lie. They did not say anything untrue, per se -- they just selectively chose what to tell, in order to get the maximum effect. They made the facts fir their hypothesis. Can kids get into SL? Yes. Do they? Yes. Does SL take reasonable steps to prevent that? Yes. Are they thwartable, Yes. Could your child get on SL and visit a "rape room?" Yes. But we all know that SL is not all rape rooms and virtual drugs (that, IMO, is the silliest part of the piece). SLs age verification, such as it is, is still "at standards." SL also has a teen grid with stronger verification. It comes down to mommy and daddy makin sure what their kid is doing, IMO.

We recently had a TV programme in the UK implying that people just go on SL to do sexual stuff. Yes, lots of folk DO use SL for that, but there are also lots of us who do innocent things while we're online.
Parents need to keep an eye on what their kids are doing, its their responsibility. For Pete's sake don't let your child have a computer in their room where you can't monitor them. Maybe the Lindens need to provide stronger methods of testing for the user's age. Kids will always want to look at stuff that is forbidden, its human nature. Its up to the mature amongst us to protect them from themselves.
Children deserve to stay innocent as long as possible.

From: Dnali Anabuki These are all great comments and essentially correct but it won't make any difference in a world where perception is reality and the media controls perception. Congressmen+media during election year = trouble.
There is no political advantage in supporting SL & the fact that any candidate/politician campaigns here will be used against them. Bad sign.
I am predicting that the pendulum is swinging and the perception that SL is a XXX place will win out and will cause a near death experience.
What is needed is a media campaign by LL (and any of us residents who have the access to media) to begin to create another perception that puts the XXX part into perspective, ie, like as in RL, there is XXX content, but there is so much more, etc.
Won't happen unfortunately because LL closes barn doors after the horses have not only left but lived long lives. This is why I posted this! It's unfair to LL and unfair to "us", the SL family. They are portraying SL as a horrible, perverted game where kids can get raped, do drugs..well now that the seed is planted in people's minds, and believe me, Fox News is watched by alot of ppl, maybe even 13 million users a day..lol..anyway..the seed is planted, I dont want it to grow!

It's never my kids fault oh no. Too bad they cant just show all the good things that are in world. Not that trying to protect the children is not an honorable thing. This politician is just losing his valid point by not seeing the entire picture and omitting other truths, doing a disservice to all involved, imo.
Also this reminds me of Tipper Gore and her crusade of censorship in the music world.

From: Snowflake Fairymeadow The media doesn't wreck people's lives...people just wreck their own because they choose to believe everything they see on TV instead of thinking for themselves. Isn't this the most frustrating thing? I've know a few people like this who will believe anything in print or on the internet, no matter how defiant of simple logic it is. It makes me want to beat my head into a wall. I have a friend who is a physician, and he just groans every time a patient mentions the word "internet". They come in with a simple cold convinced they have mesothelioma because they grew up in a house with popcorn ceilings that might have had trace amounts of asbestos. I get the same thing in my business. Hey, Trout, I know you have a doctoral degree and years and years of experience dealing with this exact issue, but some guy in Australia has a blog that mentioned that "X" is the right solution and I think we should be doing that instead of what you suggest. GAH!!! /me yanks his hair out. These are the people who are going to look at this article, never verify for themselves what SL is about, and run screaming to the government about the army of online pedophiles and rapists who are trying to invade the US. It's unfortunate that people have abdicated their responsibility to verify things for themselves and just blindly believe what they read.
