From: Peggy Paperdoll I watched the video and didn't hear a thing that was not true. We all know that children can get into the adult grid.........quite easily. This is election year vote pandering. This was anything but a "fair and balanced" report. An actual non-sensational report would talk about the fact that there are two grids, and that the grid for minors has access criteria that is closely monitored by Linden Lab. An actual report would state that Linden Lab has already clearly marked the two grids, and the adult grid is 18+ only and marked as such. An actual report would show that MySpace, which is owned by Fox, is far more dangerous to my kids than SL is. An actual report would indicate that there are no reported cases of predation on SL, while there have been several on MySpace.

i hate fox news but the story is factual and they did tell the truth. this has always been much more of an issue to me then what people decide to roleplay. Children shouldnt have access to adult fantasies. Thats a no brainer. That doesnt make adult fantasies wrong. It just means common sense says Kids and grown up stuff doesnt mix very well. Second Life should come with a strong warning. it wont hurt business, trust me. it will just draw more people to Second Life. But its the right thing to do. Your adult world Your adult imagination.

The fact that Fox has managed to titillate it's viewers for a moment by working the words "drugs" and "rape room" into a tiny piece isn't really all that disturbing compared to the fact that they've managed to convince who knows how many members of the American public that Saddam Husein caused 9/11, that it's good to pass laws to make sure that the children of the very rich not only will never have to work a day in their lives but also will never have to pay any taxes, and that the very people who work to produce the food on our tables for less than living wages should be blamed for everything we fear.

People must find out for themselves.
05-12-2008 09:48
Certain "journalists" love scaremongering and causing a sensation. We get similar tripe in the UK...we have Fox's sister channels, Sky, which often serves up fare best suited to the less bright viewers.
People can scaremonger but most human beings have minds of their own. If they have a good computer they can join us in SL and find out for themselves. There are lots and lots of harmless places on SL for people to visit.
Everyone is more than capable of discovering the truth about our beloved metaverse for themselves.

From: Swan Legend Second Life should come with a strong warning. Like this perhaps? From: someone 2.2 You must be 13 years of age or older to access Second Life; minors over the age of 13 are only permitted in a separate area, which adults are generally prohibited from using. Linden Lab cannot absolutely control whether minors or adults gain unauthorized access to the Service. You must be at least 13 years of age to participate in the Service. Users under the age of 18 are prohibited from accessing the Service other than in the area designated by Linden Lab for use by users from 13 through 17 years of age (the "Teen Area" . Users age 18 and older are prohibited from accessing the Teen Area. Any user age 18 and older who gains unauthorized access to the Teen Area is in breach of this Agreement and may face immediate termination of any or all Accounts held by such user for any area of the Service. If you reside in a jurisdiction where the age of majority is greater than 18 years old, you are prohibited from accessing the Service until you have reached such age of majority. By accepting this agreement in connection with an Account outside the Teen Area, you represent that you are an adult 18 years of age or older. By accepting this agreement in connection with an Account for use in the Teen Area, you represent that (i) you are at least 13 years of age and less than 18 years of age; (ii) you have read and accept this Agreement; (iii) your parent or legal guardian has consented to you having an Account for use of the Teen Area and participating in the Service, and to providing your personal information for your Account; and (iv) your parent or legal guardian has read and accepted this Agreement. Linden Lab cannot absolutely control whether minors gain access to the Service other than the Teen Area, and makes no representation that users outside the Teen Area are not minors. Linden Lab cannot absolutely control whether adults gain access to the Teen Area of the Service, and makes no representation that users inside the Teen Area are not adults. Adult employees, contractors and partners of Linden Lab regularly conduct their work in the Teen Area. Linden Lab cannot ensure that other users or any non-employee of Linden Lab will not provide Content or access to Content that parents or guardians may find inappropriate or that any user may find objectionable.

Wait a minute. The Taliban and Osama bin Laden work to produce food on our tables? I'll never look in the fridge the same way again! In all seriousness, Fox News and, I presume, Sky have a reputation for scaremongering and poor journalistic integrity. The problem is that people who realize this and want actual news go elsewhere, and Fox builds a loyal following of people susceptible to their nonsense.

And I'm thinking the reason the other "news" organizations are trying to be more like Fox is that the people targeted by Fox and the people targeted by most tv advertisers are the same people.

Several things were omitted. But of course she had "a very short time" in which to state the missing pieces. Pretty simple to go to the bottom of the page and click the "Contact Us" link, which I did (email copied below):
__________________________________________________________
After watching the video on Second Life, nowhere did it say that there was a "Teen Grid" specifically for those under adult age. That grid, where only children are allowed, has ZERO of the content that was described in the video.
The activities you decided to make your focal point, are only for those who, at sign-up, say they are of legal age. Nothing, either, was mentioned of the strides that Linden Lab has, and continue to, take to be sure that illegal depictions* are removed from the grid, on the whole. Gambling, being one of these.
Additionally, it has ALWAYS been up to parents primarily, to oversee what their children are watching. Perhaps, with the activities mentioned by your report, that list should include Fox News.
In the future, rather than hopping on the "Mass Hysteria Express", as so many in the media do, it might be best to check sources. You know, like a journalist would.

Note: "Depiction" means that it is a 3-dimensional representation. Actual "sex" and "violence" are not taking place any more than my watching a news program about the war in Iraq puts me in peril of getting a bullet in the head.

Now CNN DID have a more balanced and fair report.
They said that you should beware of it, but then they went on to say that it was an interesting game where youcould start a business. Then they talked to some people that actually played the game.
CNN was much more balanced. It's on youtube.

"Fair and Balanced" is a trademarked slogan, aka a marketing device rather than a real description of the product ("news" .

From: Tex Nasworthy True, except for the very first statement. 13 million users a day!
I bet my hat that this is all Philip Rosedale heard in the story that he cared about. He probably told the lab that was the best advertisement he could hope for.

And speaking of scaremongering and sensationalism; the title of this thread anyone? I hope Yummy is being sarcastic.

Any publicity, be it positive or negative is a good thing to corporate America. *sigh* But still, LL has done all they can to deal with this and frankly, now, if they ignore it, it will go away.

From: Colette Forster Can't molest the willing...LOL Excellent point. The original article said (if I remember right) that is what was going on. Another article I saw last night said it was an intern who was posing as a young girl and was denied access. Then she checked that she was 18 and was allowed right in with the same email address. So, already this seems to take on different angles as it is slowly making rounds.

And here's an example of the trouble kids can get into when they do fraudulently use Mom or Dad's credit card: http://www.money.co.uk/article/1000390-13-year-old-steals-dads-credit-card-to-buy-hookers.htm

Comedy Gold: From: someone The escort girls who were released without charge, told the arresting officers something was up when the kids said they would rather play Xbox than get down to business.
So.. it was not wonky that they were kids.. but that they wanted to play Halo instead of screw. PURE comedy gold. OH, I see.. they believed the story the kids gave them that they were stunted in growth and were circus performers.

This is interesting: "A 13 year old from Texas who ..................., has today been convicted of fraud and given a three year community order." Just that bit - "13 year year old"..."convicted of fraud". If a minor can be held accountable for their actions with a credit card, why then can they not be held accountable for their actions when claiming to be 18+ when signing up on the Adult Grid?

I sent this:
Sexual deviation such as child pornography and rape exist in many cybersocial platforms on the Internet, and it is an issue. Just like in the physical world, it is not in plain sight but if someone had a stong enough interest, they could track it down. But to give the impression that Second Life is a blatant hotbed of illegal and abusive sexual activity is an insult to Linden Labs and those hundreds of thousands of members you mentioned log in each day, the vast majority of whom do not fit the impression you've made of them on America in your broadcast.
It's very easy to target Second Life, but it is NOT a site for kids. This is very clear during sign up. To target a nonapplicable site as an example to address a real issue is suspicious if not counterproductive. It is a very exploitative move. AOL would be a better target since there is no age restriction to visit that site and its chatrooms, but we know who owns them.
You might also want to suggest to Congressman Kirk that, instead of launching a witch hunt, his efforts would be better put AND in US citizens' best interest to pursue legislation which requires age verification for sites with mature content when an account is created.

One thing I'd really like to have seen in the news reports by CNN and Fox is how many times those of us in the forums or in-world have seen someone's account suspended on the mere *accusation* by another resident that they might be underage, and how they've had to go to lengths to prove to LL's satisfaction that they were unjustly accused before the account was reactivated. It's pretty clear to anyone who's been a resident for a while that LL does in fact take this subject seriously. Some might even feel that they are a little too paranoid about it. .
