From: Smoke Gordonstone My parents watch Fox news religiously. That explains why I got the "I saw that game you play on the news, its bad" phone call lecture from my mom the other day. ROFL! See what I mean, my gramma watches it too...and I'll never hear the end of it..sighs

From: Peggy Paperdoll Stating that the main grid is 18+ is irrelevant. The way a child can enter the grid makes that fact irrelevant. If SL had safeguards in place to make it truly 18+ then that would be a valid point...........they don't so that argument is nothing but bluster. Give me a falsly stated fact from the video...............I heard none. They have far more done than most porn sites (and exceeded the federal mandated standards) If a kid steals mommy's or daddy's driver license they can easily fake their way past the age verification as well

It's disgraceful that LL have being lying about concurrency all along.
According to that Fox News report "Nearly 13 million online users visit it every day. It's a new website called Second Life"
According to the inanely grinning Congressman "We all know the trend of Internet predators. 50,000 predators online at any one time....." Yikes! That's suspiciously like the number that LL claim for concurrency.
What if ----- nearly all the people logged in to SL at any one time are predators pretending to be kids so that they can exploit kids -- and those 'kids' are actually other predators pretending to be kids so that they can .......
Kirk's solution is to call on the Federal Trade Commission to issue a warning to parents about Second Life..."
If that's all he's actually aiming to get done (apart from self-promotion) then that's not a bad thing. ZOMG! It's as if he thinks that parents should be aware. Maybe he even thinks that parents should be responsible??

From: 3Ring Binder that's the parent's fault, not SL. Indeed, but many want to see far more invasive and overblown registration schemes. Basically making it LL's sole responsibility to keep the innocent children out

Just a congressman with a lets fix-it legislation idea.
LL has a problem in that they allow free accounts. Requiring a credit card for all accounts will not totally eliminate minors, but it puts them in no worse position than porn sites.

You do know porn sites only need a box that asks if you are of legal age, and warnings about mature content? And that is only if they are based in the US, most other countries may have more stringent or lax rules on it. In fact linden labs has quite a bit more for verification than is required by law. You have warning of mature content in the region/parcel title. You have the TOS asking to verify you are 18+ (if not mommy and daddy should be paying attention to what you do on the computer)

This is just free publicity. Hypothetically, Stroker ( or insert the name of your favorite sex shop owner here) could've called these guys up just so they could sell some more fake dicks. Hell, Foxnews can come give my Voyeur Lounge some free advertising. Slap a warning label on SL for the incompetant parents who let their kids wander the net unattended? Whats the point? They dont care, or have no control over what their kids are doing. " But Suzie goes online at her FRIENDS house!!!" Good excuse for letting your 13 year old chat it up with 45 year old guys pretending to be 17. They got a teen grid here, no reason to let your kid hang out with some of the cretins I hang out with. Warning labels wont ruin SL, just make it more inviting.

This is just stupid...first of all, SL is not designed for children and children are not supposed to be on it. So, if a child ends up on SL, it is due to parental negligence. Parents are told over and over again to monitor their children's internet time. You cannot legislate against parental neglect.
Second of all, as an adult, if rape turns me on (it doesn't)...it is my right to exercise that right in a virtual, consentual manner. There is no difference between that and private role playing with a RL lover.
Third, the one av they showed was only on Orientation Island! He obviously did not get that far into the game. I mean, he was still flying into walls. The second female av they showed could have been there 5 minutes. No telling.
I will tell you this, there are dangers in SL. Just as there are dangers in First Life. If I wanted to find a hermaphrodite, lesbian, two headed dominatrix in RL...I am sure that I could. Just as you could go into search and if you look hard enough...you can find what you are looking for.
I think this is a sensationalized attempt by one legislator to get camera time and votes by trying to impose government control over the internet and the general public.
Anyone worth their grain will not take this attention whore seriously.

From: Colette Forster Anyone worth their grain will not take this attention whore seriously. Agreed! But this is congress we are talking about... I have yet to find a drug store in SL by just exploring. I have yet to just happen across a "rape room" by exploring. This guy had to come into SL and turn on mature search and search out those things. None of the places were exactly full of people either. Colette.. the girl you saw was actually him. He made a character posing as a teen girl to see if he could be virtually molested.

I mentioned somewhere else that there is an adult virtual world called Red Light World which is totally sex-oriented. I haven't vistited it, honest! But I came across its website while I was doing one of my regular looks at the current virtual-world scene. Compared to what I described, most of what we see in SL is pretty tame!

From: Conifer Dada Fox News has a bit of a notorious reputation of its own. Like everyone thinks: 'well, they would say that, wouldn't they?' about everything they cover!!! Not everyone thinks so, unfortunately I actually work with (and was employed by) people who feel that Fox News is the *best* news available. During the last election race, my then boss actually suggested I watch Fox News for the "most fair and balanced reporting available" on politics. They clearly pander most heavily to the evangelical conservatives, and despite their obvious biases and laughably disingenuous coverage should be taken as a very serious threat. .

From: Ciaran Laval No it's being economic with the truth While you are probably technically correct, I'd still consider it lying when taken as a whole. Whether through omission or direct falsification, anything said with the intention of deceiving someone is (as good as) lying. .

Ho Hum. The video was just a quick blurb of nothing new. The reporter even hurried the interview along. I will begin to worry when some primetime news magazine such as Dateline decides to dedicate an hour reporting on the "evils" of SL.

From: Sindy Tsure ... and I like how both the Fox reporter and the Congressman refer to SL as 'new'. A "new website", nonetheless! From: Peggy Paperdoll Give me a falsly stated fact from the video...............I heard none. See above re: falsely stated fact. I like the end of the video, "a child being able to lie about their age, and within 20 minutes have access to this kind of content" - your average horny teenage boy, who no doubt has already been in SL, would be able to navigate through the sign-up and orientation and be in a free sex haven in five minutes or less. No, I think we should expect an influx of middle aged men with closeted fetishes.

From: Yummy Freelunch Right, so this Rep Congressman Mark Kirk has gone to the federal trade commission and they are getting legislation passed to put a warning label on SL. He fails to say that these areas he went to are in a mature area, anyway, and kids shouldnt even be there. So it pisses me off that they are portraying SL as some seedy game with drooling perverts in trench coats waiting for some little kiddie to skip by so they can grab them. I mean, I've never been to those areas, and I really hate that they portray SL this way..it really puts out a bad message, and HEY, Im trying to get some of my friends and family to join, dammit! That's what annoyed me the most about this report - just keying in on one segment of SL. I've never been to any of those places. As in RL, I avoid the sex stuff. There is sooo much richness in SL in so many other ways which, if Fox news is "fair & balanced" should be given equal time. I'm not holding my breath though.

Partial information, although true, can be misleading.
