From: Sindy Tsure Where did I say that people under 18 should be allowed access to the main grid? This is pretty clearly, IMO, a way for people who provide 'public' access to SL to limit people using their PCs to PG regions. I'm sorry I must not be understanding what you said. From: Sindy Tsure I wonder if an official, PG-only viewer would be a good idea, especially for places like libraries or schools that might like to use SL but keep the naughty bits out. Bonus points for having it visually mute (aka: hide) objects/avatars/chat on mature parcels. Since children are not allowed on the grid who would the PG-only viewer be for? I'm sorry I'm being dense.

A PG only viewer would be for professional users who want to avoid NSFW things while they are using SL for work-related purposes. It would also work for households or public areas where people might want to access SL, but where children might be present or where the public place is PG. So, for example, if I worked for a company that wanted an SL presence, the company might dictate the use of a PG viewer, because it doesn't want its employees visiting x-rated sites while on work time. Libraries and internet cafes give web access to people, and they migh require a PG only viewer. They might also require a viewer that is incapable of remembering passwords. At any rate, there could be certain limited uses for such a viewer, but the average recreational user probably wouldn have such a need. I know I wouldn't.

I don't think we need to be as worried about our kids accessing adult areas as we do about adults accessing kids areas. This is where the real predators are. Look at most of the cases where an adult lures a kid into meeting him/her in RL. Almost all come from places that are normally considered kids areas.

Indeed, chat rooms and messengers are real popular for that... and are all accessed with even less limits than SL

From: Usagi Musashi Well thats all good and said, but a short sightness on llabs part doesnt pardon them for allowing them without min amount of logical provention........oh well i keep forgeting its about money these days and not what the real applies to LLABS. Since they keep forgetting that rl does have real Lawas of their own. What would be a good thing for LL to do about this?

Like if I'm in a public place or the grand kids are in the room I might use it to avoid embarrassment... but couldn't I just avoid x-rated areas? (Like I usually do anyway?)

From: Kaimi Kyomoon What would be a good thing for LL to do about this? Finish the beta systems and tweak the current ones. And make the people committing fraud face the laws relevant to it Basically finish setting up systems that exceed the required law's requirements for age verification online the question should be: what should parents be doing to prevent their kids from getting online and finding trouble

Exactly! The first thing parents need to realize is that sex and nudity are not "bad". Then they need to realize that although their kids may indeed want to see sex and nudity on their computers they do NOT want to be molested by a sexual predator.
What parents need to do is get their heads out of the sand and LEARN about the Internet and how kids are lured to meeting predators. Then they need to tell their kids EVERYTHING they learned. I remember when my son was about 10 and I had to explain to him why he was in just as much danger as a little girl - anal rape. Sure it seemed odd to talk about at the time but I'm sure glad I did. It made a real impression.
Now that my son is grown the only side-effects I've noticed from raising him completely honestly are trust and respect. You just aren't doing your kids any favors by not telling them the whole truth.
Predators can't get savy kids. Simple as that. It is not the responsibility of SL or the government or anyone else to keep your kids safe. Even if it was, would you really trust them?

From: Rebecca Proudhon Do you have children? nope, for various reasons that are not of importance. But I do have nieces and a nephew. And have helped their responsible parents (as well as others that asked) to set up the computers with accounts for the children that can not get on the internet (and a family login that the parent enters the password in to go online with browsers set to safe search) They also do not let them go online unsupervised. I also call before I buy movies or games to make sure they are appropriate for them (it surprised more than one person near me when I was christmas shopping... but a couple asked questions and left better informed) They come to me and I help keep them informed (and they do try to stay informed on stuff) of games and stuff they want to make sure is appropriate for the kids. Do you have kids? And have you done your part to protect them or are you expecting others to do it for you rather than take responsibility as a parent?

You certainly could try, but it's tough to sort out the X or R - rated areas from the PG ones sometimes. Obviously Barb's Bondage Emporium and Genital Shop is going to not be PG, but sometimes a normal shopping trip can wind up with unexpected consequences. As for being at home - you probably could just exercise caution and do pretty well because you're purposely monitoring your activities. In libraries or in a professional environment, the owner of the network could force a PG rating on it's users. I've never tried, but I suspect libraries already restrict access to porn sites on their computers, and I know my company has a wall that prevents access to some sites with inappropriate content already.

From: Rebecca Proudhon Then Shhh. tsk tsk, such hostility when losing an argument. People can understand responsibility of a parent over a company when rl issues prevent parenthood. Especially when it comes to a product intended for the adult or older populations. GTA has a rating for example, tells anyone that it's not intended for children. Responsible parents look at it and decide if it's okay for their kids... irresponsible ones grab it and toss it into the cart so the kid will shush.... and then complain about the company producing it when they actually see the kid playing it one day down the road. The biggest protection for kids is responsible parents that do their job, not relying on the rest of the world to bend over backwards to protect them while said parents let the computer/tv raise them And I repeat: Do you have kids? And have you done your part to protect them or are you expecting others to do it for you rather than take responsibility as a parent?

From: Max Herzog Do you work in a bank or for a credit card? Then Shhh on that ridiculous thread. Ta. Baloney. I use credit cards constantly. I pay many things online. Only SL has made that mistake with me of any other service I use. That is not to say that there are no other dysfunctional services out there. A person devoid of parenting experience is going to lecture about children and parenting.

How do you know I didn't have kids? I said I do not have them now for reasons that are not relevant or any of your business hon. Many reasons out there for folks to have experience with raising and taking care of children. For all you know I may have had kids and they are moved out because they are adults now. But I answered the question as it applies currently. If you don't like being asked if you did basic parenting responsibilities by me I'm sure someone else will ask you the same question shortly... will you then refuse to answer?

From: Damien1 Thorne Like the Government. Yes this vile thing called the Government, wanting to protect the little children from the main grid, aka, pervertzz central. Does it matter to anyone that underage kids are running about and you might be interacting with them and not know it? The age verification that allows one to verify his pet gopher, isn't legit. So some legit way to verify has to be incorporated. Maybe it will TAKE the government to cause the creation of a better way to do this. In the mean time this thread is full of "can't do's," and blaming and not enough "better ideas."

You are aware of the big label on the verification that reads: BETA in case you were unaware and do not know what that means in software terms: a beta product is released for open testing in order to find flaws that may not have cropped up in the sterile production testing environments. Yes it matters there might be underage kids doing things they shouldn't, and I wonder where there parents are. Much like I wonder about the kids that do stupid things that result in the innocent being punished for it (there are places where it used to be okay to have a beer, but due to parents not parenting or controlling the kids... and raising a fuss because their innocent child was drinking with some buddies none can drink there) It's not the government's responsibility to raise children... if it was then there would be boarding centers for all children to be raised in. It would protect them from all the bad things too

From: Ciaran Laval Linden Lab refuse to use credit card based verification, it would be a vast improvement on the Integrity solution, especially if there was a nominal fee associated with it. What we have now in the nightclub situation would be a 15 year old showing the bouncer my driving licence and being granted entry.
The whole adult flagging issue is a nonsense too. You are aware that a Credit Card does bubkiss as far as Age Verification .... right?
