The people are, apparently, already away. At this stage, all I can do is to try to get them back.

Read Vonnegut's story "Harrison Bergeron". They're run by the Handicapper General. Nobody can fail because nobody can be better than everyone else. It's all about play balance. SL isn't about play balance, it's about letting people be all they can be. THAT is what makes it a "virtual world", not just a "game".

Right. But the opposite side of that is that it lets many people find out that "all they can be" isn't much. That can be an outright painful experience. It may be virtuous or even necessary, but it certainly isn't going to sell.

I feel like you know exactly what to do to get out of your rut. But that you're getting off on this in some fashion, or you would not continue to use it....it's working for you.

You're getting a benefit from it, at the expense of others' time. Not sure if it is Comfort or Entertainment.
I personally, feel a manipulation thing going on there. I come back and enter in....because it's rather intriguing....and boggles my mind.

That's all a personal opinion. But you had 400 posts to tell me how YOU feel. I'll take a few for myself.

I know what I could do to build things. I have no idea what I could do to win anyone back.

But I also know that the sandbox guy got luckier than me. I also know that someone else could give me that experience, but they choose not to. They have the right to choose that way, yes. But from the fact they make that choice, I conclude: if they have no interest in me, why would making anything change that?

And yet there are people who are attracted to an environment where they can be all they can be. They are attracted to sports, businesses, worlds, where there's an actual risk of losing. I'm not talking about rock climbing and NASCAR, I'm talking about... oh, golf. Not everyone can be Tiger Woods. Some people don't always win, and some people never even beat par. But somehow golf still "sells".

Sure, but they don't have to play against Tiger Woods every time they go to the links. SL's global market makes sure that they do - one of the unfortunate consequences of the Global Village.

Also, most people who are attracted to that kind of environment are likely to be doing that in the real world, where the rewards are greater.

Think about what I'm going to conclude about the reason you are discussing this with me.

The booklet says do something, real. In world. In the game. Stop complaining, start acting, and no, nothing you do in the forums counts as acting.

Nope, because my booklet says, sandbox luck comes before you do anything, or less than I've done.

Build things. If they don't work, build something else. If that doesn't work, build something else. If that doesn't work, see line 1. Eventually you'll make something that's good, interesting, faddish, fantastic, cool, popular, successful, or otherwise breaks you out of the rut. YOU will be someone else, then. You'll be amazed how that changes the way people react to you.

Bullshit. I've seen some of the best products in SL, and in a lot of categories the best products are ... mediocre at best. There just aren't that many Tiger Woods out there. So, no, you're not going up against Tiger Woods every time. You *are* going up against Yumi Murakami. And you know what? She's kicking your butt.

I didn't say "people want you to build". I said "people are going to be more interested in the Yumi who's not in that rut you're wallowing in." Get out of it. You're blocked on building? Beat that block down.

The market doesn't vanish when someone buys something. I have several ferret avatars. I don't need six different ferrets. I just bought them because the new one was better.
