Hey Trout, did you buy anything at the auction last night?

The trip to the auction was called off due to not realizing that it was Wednesday at the time, and the auction was Thursday. Or: yes, he bought you, don't you remember? Wow, he really messed with your mind. I didn't think the hypnotist would actually be effective, but . . .. wow, you really don't remember? wow

Well, certainly there's nothing wrong with anyone wanting to keep their personal details private. Personally, however, I can't imagine why they would. It's the fact that they have "security concerns" which I find the most problematic. What kind of drama has unfolded that would prevent someone from giving out the most obvious and oldest "chat room info" (A/S/L). It just piques my curiousity...and my spider senses :)

You know what? If someone doesn't want to divulge personal info, then that info (and the reasons why they don't want to divulge it) are None Of Your Business. I don't mean that in a hostile way, but quite literally.

Perhaps they're playing a character in SL and talking about their RL (or saying why they don't want to) would break the immersiveness for them? Perhaps they have rl people they wish to avoid? Perhaps they just don't wish to talk about it right now? It doesn't matter. Personal details are just that - PERSONAL. Other avatars don't have a right to demand that sort of info, and making assumptions about why a person does or doesn't wish to discuss their RL details in SL is going to be fraught with error. If you have difficulty imagining why someone might plausibly wish to keep RL and SL separate, it might be worth contemplating the possibility that your imagination has failed you, rather than assuming there's no good reason just because you have difficulty thinking of one that you would find plausible given your own RL personal circumstances.

People have all sorts of reasons for doing what they do, and it's pretty much impossible to know what those reasons are without them telling you directly. And if they don't want to tell you directly... well, that's life. Time to move on and discuss something else, like say the weather in SL, or What Atrocities LL Have Committed Lately, or Gee, isn't this build something else?

No, he didn't buy me. I spent the rest of the evening dancing with a lovely young lady.

I know, I was there. The "lovely young lady" was actually Trout.

I'm seriously considering going tonight just to watch, but I have a TON of RL stuff to do and a really early morning tomorrow, so I don't know if I'll be on. Stupid RL - interfering with my SL again.

I think I posted in the advice to new residents thread that you should do some stuff that's totally out of character with your RL just to experience something new and see where that leads, so I'm taking my own advice. I've never been to a slave auction, that's for sure. I don't want to buy anyone, but I'd like to watch. I'm sure that the visual I have in my head is way off from the reality...or SLeality...whatever.

Lexxi - do you have a notecard or LM or something, and what's the dress code?

Sl is what YOU make it and is not a RP environment, although there are those who have created wonderful RP sims. i have seen this type of attitude from those who are fresh from WoW, UO and the like.

SecondLife is just that, a place where You can create a world and or place or objects that you wouldn't normally see RL.

i fail to see how someone can be jaded with builds like Caledon, The Botanical Gardens, Apollo Gardens, etc. if one wishes to see more creative builds, then do them yourself. as Chris said:

"Your world, your imagination is just that. Make of it what you will, and don't let anyone else impose their world or their imagination on you. Give out RL information if you like, but don't demand that others do. RP if you like, but don't demand that others do."

if you bring a negative attitude to SL, thats what you will get out of it.

Stella, I agree that internet stalker paranoia is blown way out of proportion. But if someone doesn't want to share info (like me) then that's their prerogative. The reason I don't want to is very simple. I already have a RL. I come here to have a SL.

Agreed. It's not that we're being all clandestine and whatever Stella, but like Bradley is saying - for me, Solanghe is my alter ego. Though similiar to me in RL in a number of ways, She is who I am in SL. For me SL is one world, RL is the other. I don't think my RL details are relevant in SL.

*I have shared a bit of RL info with one SL aquaintance but she is someone I have had fun with for about 8 months on a regular basis in SL before feeling comfy enough to do that. Oh...and she shared something with me too: In RL, she is actually a He. :p

I thought that meant he wore dreadlocks, drank lots of coffee and chained himself to trees a lot.

Mmm, so that's a no is it?

Actually its likely to result in me saying "ok", and then wearing my 3 foot strapon I got just for the job and chasing you around the room

I still don't understand why they run, I'm only doing what they asked for! *giggles*

From: bilbo99 Emu

It's a seriously debatable point. I say if it's open and nobody there .. who's to know you peeked?

As I said it's not a pet peeve of mine, just one I know some people have. My "home" in SL is open to all (except the ones on my ban list), and everyone is welcome to drop in anytime, but then my home isn't exactly a normal home.

Mitz.

Somehow I forsee this evening being spent in the altogether!!

hey Sandy Solana and Laguna were once my regular hangouts and they still are pretty fun. Say hi to Maer if you go to Solana! Anyway...don't feel compelled to be nude because it's a nude beach...many of the regulars keep some clothes on anyway. LOL

Have fun and enjoy SL!

It is life Stella, for many of us with my condition and others like it SL is a Godsend. Here we can walk and dance without fear of falling or just do them period, something we can't do in RL. Here we can meet and talk to people again, not just sit in our livingrooms and let our brains die watching TV.

For all it's faults, I love SL.

I'm with you on this Chris. Because of my health condition I'm not allowed to drive, nor am I allowed to even take the bus alone. SL allows me to get out and be social and do things. It also allows me to get to some support groups that I wouldn't be able to otherwise. As much as I bitch about it, there's a little of everything here for everyone and I love it. I have found the number of people who are homebound due to physical or mental illness and use SL as an outlet is HUGE. Much bigger than I think most people realize.

Sl is what YOU make it and is not a RP environment,

if you bring a negative attitude to SL, thats what you will get out of it.

Anytime you play a character you are role playing. SL most certaily IS a role playing platform. You are role playing right when you sign into SL. I role play a shy, kinda freaky girl. That is my Second Life. Other people role play a Hot stripper/escort yet they are male in RL.

I don't go into SL with a negative attitude, I come out with one many times anymore. Not because of people like Chris or you but because of the large number of new players that can't respect the concept that people are not as they are in RL (pretty much the definition of RP).

Yes, the best opening, I shouldn't admit, was someone that complimented my hair.

now ..

Having an objection to the eharmonizors does not mean people want those with disabilities to not be able to use SL as they wish..

I don't follow the objection at all, is it the "role playing" label some have used?

I would think it would be the opposite those with disabilities wouldn't want their RL condition on display for everyone to see / ala webcam on a prim.

I can only speak for myself on this matter. My disability is neurological not physical so it wouldn't show. Basically, I never know when I'm going to blank out and become completely disoriented and lost. I don't mind sharing that bit of RL here because it doesn't say much about who I am.

I am actually more here to have a different SL and am not the least bit interested in the eharmonizors. I don't understand SL dating or sex in any way shape of form. It's just odd to me. I do, however, respect that it's what others like to do and that's none of my business. I'm on here to chat, discuss, debate and have fun but not have any RL connection. No, I don't ever plan to meet you even if you are down the street.

I think that really is what we are coming down to as the biggest no-no in SL: Not respecting others are here for different reasons than you are. If it is your world and your imagination then everyone needs to respect it's everyone elses world and their imagination too. Make of it what you want but don't get pissed off because the next guy over doesn't want to share in your vision.

thats just it, You are assuming that many here are RPing. and thats why you will never understand nor get the many layers that make up SL. if you wish to come into this format with the RP'ers POV, then go for it. but do not lump ALL of us into your personal view of what SL is. my ava is not a character, she is a extension of me, with a better wardrobe.
