I don't blame you, after finally seeing that butt of yours, you'd need RL Banlines to get any privacy...or move to Fresno.

HEY...I used to live in Fresno...be nice! ;)

Sally you are a lifesaver!!! Hope to bump into you in SL sometime.

You'll spot me, I'll be wearing a big saggy skin and wearing a crown with 'System Failure' above my head :)

Hehehe...I was brought up on a wee island out in the middle of the sea..off the British Isles :) And i know what you mean...there's little more you can say that won't locate ya!

Wow, small world isn't it? Maybe it's the same small island! I'm not saying anymore ..... I prefer to be an enigma! (yessir)

Incidentally, I picked my SL name completely at random with no rhyme or reason or similarity to my own. I had an idea to Google my SL name a few minutes ago and it turns out I'm a character in the 1997 film The Ice Storm played by Adam Hann-Byrd. Fancy that!!

I like the coins from that isle.

You have skin, hair and your friends appendage? :) If not...good skin and hair first...then some good clothes. Its all you need. Mmmm...then a smile...a walk replacer to get rid of the SL mince....a standing still pose...then maybe a tattoo maybe and a bit of jewellery, like a watch say. That gets you walking about SL in good shape.
Prices have changed and stuff...but i friend just told me they reckoned about 2000lin to take a new AV up to a really good standard....I'm sure others here will know better..especially the women :)

I just made someone over the other day...$2000-3000 for a woman, for good skin, hair, shape, starter outfits, shoes, and Vista is about right. But then, I also have a lot of inexpensive shortcuts for when I'm giving someone a makeover, if they don't have quite that much to work with ;)

Lots of space in Texas, but . . . is it big enough for your hair?

Yeah ETD was one I was thinking too. Sin Skins don't do male skins do they?

I have male skins. And a number of non-matching attachments, including green.

Wow! this thread has gone everywhere! lol. I've just finished reading it after a full day! I was doing things in between bouts of reading but still lol.

I don't have any tips for social no nos because I haven't been actually in world and speaking to ppl for long enough.

However, I don't think it takes so many L$ to make a decent av. I have been to quite a few freebie places. I got them from natalia zelmanov's blog and also from a guy in world. They are really cool places and I have a few outfits which I have put together.
I think the key really is to find something you like the look of. I'm not really one for sticking to a particular look so I don't really want to spend loads on something I may not wear that often.
I basically ransacked the freebies, put together lots of outfits, and have the rest tucked away in a folder in case I need it in the future (I can't throw things away, i hoard things 'for a rainy day' lol. tho it is prob best to get rid of things you don't need).

i haven't bought anything yet because I have yet to be in world with a decent amount of lindens lol but i like my looks. Although I could do with some different skins.

I agree that there is very few good items out there for guy avs. This is something I am hoping to remedy eventually (fingers crossed). Once I have the hang of building outfits + accessories etc both prims and textures, I would like to start a shop catering for guys. I hope it will be for fairly new guys to help them on their way.

Anyway all that depends on me getting back in world soon lol. otherwise i will be driven insane from sl withdrawal lol. And i wont be able to practice because i am rubbish atm.

Good luck Sandy and welcome to SL. Hope I see you around :)

PS. /me waves at all those who are from wee islands off the British Isles. I am from England! You know, the part of the slightly bigger island you may notice pretty close to your wee islands. lol :D

True. I think we can all do a little better in welcoming new people. We've had s everal new people who are turning out to be delightful posters, i'd hate to think we are losing more. But, nothing ventured, nothing gained. I'd encourage them to give it a try, maybe with a few pointers on where potential landmines might be.

Not everyone is as un-scared of you as I am. :)

And hello there! Presumably she means a nice little island off Scotland when she says wee island. I don't like the idea of a wee island.

The Isle of Wee? No, not someplace I'd like to spend a vacation I think.

It's an AO which gives you a series of nice stands, walks, sits, etc.

It's definitely easy to put together a "decent" AV without spending much money, and I've done that too. But when I have someone spend the kind of money I mentioned...they're getting a "model quality" AV.

It's all a matter of how someone wants to appear in SL. Freebie skins look a bit harsher, and usually aren't accepted by modeling agengies.

Hey Sandy - just a couple pointers from someone who made his Av on the cheap initially. It's much harder to do it for a guy, but it can be done. Enkythings is good. Also search/places/Gamersbrand. Pick the second choice that pops up. I can't remember to name exactly, but it's got the best freebies for men around. Most places are pretty random. They have a handful of good skins for men. As for shape, I'm no artist by any means. I started with a freebie shape that was reasonably close to what I wanted and which I could modify, then most of the heavy work was already done. Pay close attention to proportion and spend most of your time on the face.

For an AO, pick up a free copy of ZHAO II. Check Ziggy Puff's profile inworld - he's the King of ZHAO. It's basically an empty shell when you get it. Then go get the animations you want, either freebies or just buy the individual animations so you aren't buying a bunch of stuff you ever need. I love my complete pack from Abranimations, but I'll never use 3/4 of the animations in it. Zhao can be tough to set up. IM me in-world if you need help. I tore my hair out for a couple days until I got it to work.

Last but not least, your friends attachment is going to need a little time in the shop before it's ready to play. Go somewhere nice and quiet and put it on with your new skin. It's an attachment, so it won't take on the color of the rest of you. First, right click on it and hit edit. It will take on a yellow halo and you'll see the build menu come up. You will also see red, green and blue arrow bars pointing up/down, right/left and forward/back. Click on these and drag to position the appendage properly. Sometimes they are attached surprisingly low, high, off to the side, etc. (when you get hair, use this same technique to position it on your head. They are never quite right the first time you wear them.) Once it's positioned right, then with the build box, click texture and you'll see a couple color boxes. This is the tricky part. Click on that and use the palette to match the color of the appendage to you as closely as possible. Then click off the build box and cycle through the light settings. I think it's world/sun/set sun to sunrise, noon, sunset, midnight. The trick is to get it to match as closely as possible in all four settings.

Good luck.

I will note, as an add on to Trout's talk about Trout Jr. that there are skin makers that have skin for the attachments. You put the skin script into your package of fun and it sets up the skin to much more closely match your body's skin than anything you might be able to do. I know Body Politik has that. They even have a section where they sell just that skin texture for your mini-monster. Much harder to use that, I would assume, if you didn't get the skin there (Body Politik). A warning: BP is expensive, though.

Bringing the minimap up as soon as you TP can help a lot with this. I use it so I can move off of the TP-in point without running folks down, before anything's rezzed.

Bingo. When you TP using a landmark, open minimap and move, avoiding the dots.

Note that when someone offers you a direct TP, it's best to stay put, and they'll usually be right in front of you if they didn't move.

O Great Slut Rater, I see that you need a Certification of your own. Just ask Chris if his "Carli Certified to Match" sticker isn't worth every penny he paid for it.

(I wouldn't know anything about it, really, except that I chanced to be on the scene when he got Certified. Just as an observer, mind you. Honest.)

Of course, you wouldn't have to use Carli, I guess. As an Official Rater of Avatars, you could certify yourself. But, "Trout Recreant -- Trout Certified to Match" just doesn't have quite the same authoritative ring, wouldn't you agree?

Oh, and Sandy, go there and also go to Sarah Nerd's freebie place (I've forgotten what it is called, just look up Sarah Nerd in the people tab in search in SL and look at her picks). There is a free male a/o there. It isn't the best thing in the world, but it is better than the default walk . . . I think. Also has many free or near free things.

Oh, this place is fabulous - I still go there on occasion. I ran into Sara Nerd the last time and she is a total sweetie-pie.
