Under 18 doesn't mean child. I doubt there are many 8 year olds on the grid.

No argument there but where I live anyone under 16 is a child. 16 to 17 is young adult and 18+ is adult.

I think this thread needs to be closed. I am sorry that I ever mentioned the A word.

OK, this raises a new question: Ladies, how do you feel about someone asking you where you got your hair/dress/shoes? My RL understanding is that in RL, women resist answering such questions for fear they will meet themselves coming at the next get-together. Is SL that way, or are you willing to share sources?

i dont mind. if i can remember where i got it, i tell them and give them a lm as well.

passes Laura some cheesecake ...:D

you can right-click any prim and do an inspection to learn who created it, pull of the profile of the creator, and go to their store. there's no real need to ask, imo. but i also don't think it's wrong to ask. if someone doesn't want to tell you, then they'll say so, and then you jsut find out on your own anyway.

i'm more afraid people would think thats rude, since you can see the silver (Or w/e color you set) line going to their clothes/items and to me its akin to 'inspecting' in MMOs like EQ and EQ2.. some people get offended by that, and I'd expect the same here though I don't know

back in the time of Ultima online you couldn't inspect peoples, in fact you could even conceal your equipment by wearing a large cloak over it, these new mmo suck sometimes...

Because this is not a chat room for a lot of people. It is a world in and of itself. While some avatrs are meant to represent the person to an extent, many are characters in and of themselves, the RL of the controller is irrelevant.

Speaking for myself this is still basically a chat room, albeit as part of a larger whole. Invariably the people I click instantly with and run like a wildfire turn out to be ex chatroom mods or ops - and we've seen it ALLLLLLL before only in a less conducive environment.

As to what would stop people using ASL ... my god, I hate that. I have always hated that, and in younger and less responsible days I was wont to let rip into people for being lazy. It's LAZY is what is wrong with it ... and you wouldn't barge up to people in the street and ask them that - well, unless you had a weird disease that made you think everyone was a hermaphrodite and you needed a sat nav to remind you where you were ...

Unless in a roleplay area I assume people are being themselves, I personally find the idea of a full time 'character' so far out of keeping with myself as to be an alien thought.

Re where I got my stuff = landmark given.

Please read the 1000 previous threads on this subject and don't try to turn this into an ageplay thread thank you.

My post was meant to demonstrate a no-no and nothing more.

If you see what looks like a house /home with a bed and couch and whatnot please dont jump in their bed with your virtual girlfriend/boyfriend and have hot sex. Although some dont mind it others hate it. I tend to get out a mock video camera when i see this and they yell at me and then I tell them to get outa my house please :)

I had one guy tell me my house was not clearly market. It has a welcome mat outside that rings incessantly as you approach the place and spams "welcome to wihelms home" but i guess sometime people need to be less subtle :D

SL is not a "chat room". ASL does not apply. Second Life is about creating a separate life from your real life. So giving out ASL defeats the purpose of having a Second Life.

I never ask someone's age or location. It is irrelevant to me. I base my judgment on how they act. If I wanted to know people in RL then there are plenty of dating sites rigged with cam and IM software that is superior to 3D avatars.
One page closer!!

Laura, saying what SL isn't, I think is counter-productive. It's lots of things to lots of people. The plethora of newborn who ask where are you from and how old proves that for many, SL *is* a chatroom, maybe before they understand the wider implications and opportunities or maybe before they give up and go back to AIM/whatever.

Right, back to the archive.

edit: ha! covered by Chris just two posts further on LOL

As I said in my previous reply...... I've not had the problems you seem to have, feel free to contact me inworld to check out places where we can all be and let be :-)

Hi Sally,

Wow this thread really took off!! So I ended up on a nudist beach last night. I couldn't work out how to attach "it" and ended up in a strange place trying to buy one which didn't go well.
The thing I did realise last night was that the people I was mixing with in these areas were of a different social group to the people I had mixing with the previous night. I think I'm more of a 'sitting in a bar with a drink' rather than a 'lying on a beach naked' kind of guy!

Anyway, I noted your comment above and, even though I've already had lots of great places offered to visit, what sort of place would you be suggesting? That sounds like the sort of place for me!! After wandering around some sort of shopping centre selling .........attachments ......... last night, I think I need somewhere a but more wholesome for tonight!

By the way, as a noob I have another burning question that I have to ask .....

I'm not religious in any way shape or form and don't have any major opinions on the subject .... but ...... with the world news constantly reporting drama form around the globe connected to beliefs, do they feature in SL and if so, do things ever get heated?

Sandy, in general people don't talk much about the real world. If they do, it's about more happy topics or maybe some garden variety conversation that isn't depressing or controversial. Notice I said "in general".

If you want to talk about anything with any depth, you may want to seek out the discussion groups with the Search Events function.

Mmm...good question..my view is pretty much what i say in my profile.

"I've been all over the world and no matter what age, colour, religion or sexual persuasion people are..ten percent of them are just not nice:( Luckily that means ninety percent of people are beautiful :))!

Same applies to SL i reckon..i never ask because it can give you pre-conceptions about people (mmmm...religion is a no no then?)..largely because the media hype it all up and forget that its only the ten percent that cause the problems

Hi again Sandy,

Yes this thread has certainly thrown up some *cough* discussion :D

Can't advice you on the "it" issue, because .... ahem .... I've never had a need for one shall we say.

Wholesome places to go? Well, I'm not into sitting around in a pub on the whole, because I don't drink :)

There's a fun non-nude beach I consider home away from home, where I met a lot of my oldest friends. It's in my inworld profile if you want to check it out. Lots of activities and fun, and party with live music every Friday night. Lots of non-nude beaches are more about socialising than anything else, but finding the right one can be tricky.

Other places to hang out and meet people? Well ....... shameless plug for a particular industry coming up:
I spent many many hours last night hopping from one live music event to another. Very wholesome, great fun, very mixed crowds and certainly open to all unless they are in themed roleplaying sims. And even there the music venue is usually in a "neutral" zone. Also, the music-listening and musicians crowd are on the whole a fun and very sociable bunch and there's music to suit pretty much anyone's taste. I'm an utter SL music fanatic and for me it's one of the coolest things about SL (apart from making stuff and exploring). Also made quite a few friends at such events btw.

As for religion, that too depends where you are and who you are with I guess. I've never been involved in a conversation on the subject, but also woudn't feel an urge to have an opinion on it. :)

Keep having fun!
Sally

Thanks Sally,

That sounds like my kind of thing. if I wanted to do something similar (and I know I'm going to sound like a bumbling baffoon here) do I open 'search' then type 'live music' into events? Then when the list comes up do I just pick one and teleport to it?

The reason I ask is that I was trying last night to find places to go, and when you search under, say, 'New York' a big list appears. Is there a way to try and suss out where you're teleporting before you go? I found myself ending up in places where there were no people and in one place where a message came up saying I had so many seconds to leave before I was ejected!!

Live Music sounds fun though.

Search can be a fickle "feature" :p

To find live music, you need to use the "events" tab in the search window, then you'll see a category chooser, select live music, hit search and voila! (make sure you include mature places). A lot of event posters will include a description of the type of music you can expect.

To find out where you're going before you get there in general search as well as in events, you click on the place or event you're interested in and choose "show on map", then the map will come up and show your potential destination so you can see where it is and whether there's anyone there.

Sally :)

I have to ask (even though I run the risk of a social no-no), there have been quite a few mentions in this thread towards sex in SL.

I'm not a complete novice and I know what 'cybering' is, but is it possible to ask in polite company what is the jist of it? I've never seen any male avatars walking round sporting a <whistle> but does that really go on? And when people actually get down to it, is it just via the gift of typing and a good imagination or more sort of ..... on screen?

This may sound like I'm looking for tips but I'm not!!!! I'm in this for the social interaction and something to do with my evenings.

Is is possible to open my eyes without the gory details??? <cringe>
