From: Sansarya Caligari A workaround is to change your active group to make invisible avatars appear more quickly. You tp to someplace, you see nobody or only a few somebodies, but in chat you see lots of people talking and you can see their dots on the minimap...right click on your avatar title, choose Groups, then activate a different group title for another group you belong to. Not sure why, but this forces the other avatars to appear almost immediately about 90% of the time, and I recently discovered it also causes other avatars to UnRuth (to me anyway). the way it was 'splained to me is, it causes the server to update for you again or something like that.... As to how to get along in SL? hmm not sure i know, i'm pretty antisocial serioulsy just look in teh events go to places, be polite, be yourself and enjoy the magic that is here in SL. i cannot really add a lot to what others have said, all my pet peeves have been addressed. My strongest suggestion is to explore explore explore the things you will see, the people you will meet. Welcome and i hope you enjoy SL as much and meet as many wonderful friends as i have here!

Generally in SL you have the same social taboos as in RL. Even for different country-sims (Like amsterdam, new york, etc) have different social values... just do what you would in RL and not more unless its specified that thats ok usually.. sex clubs and such are advertised as such, bdsm places are as well... Addedd no-no's because of the virtual world and its possibilities: Don't build on someone elses land and leave the object(s) there... they have a prim limit to follow and that might make them max out if they dont have auto-return on for some reason and dont see your item. Don't just wander into peoples homes (Its easier than RL). Many people find this extremely rude... if they are home maybe talk to them, ask them if you can.. if not home, then maybe cam inside to see their deco skills.. but still generally don't just barge in, be kind about things. KEEP YOUR PANTS ON! OK... so no legelity issues like RL.. doesn't make it ok o be nude most places Don't beg for L$, items, or help.. thats annoying... if someone sees you're new (Most people can tell I've found) then they might offer to help you... if not and you require help, maybe ask them if they can help you get used to the world a bit.. be courteous and they should be as well (Not always true but.. usually) Don't ask about how things are made in shops... people get pissed (I know from experience... 2nd day online got banned from a shop for asking how their poofers were better than the ones I got from my freebie particle system maker and messing around... that was stupid) Thats all I can think of.. be courteous and unless they are butts they should be too generally..

From: Lexxi Gynoid And also, please note that some women are in the market for "used cars" and therefore you should "dress" accordingly. Please check the signature lines (go to User CP to turn on sigs, images, etc.). Bad kitty! Lexxi, just because I'm in the market for a car, doesn't mean I want every man I meet to be dressed like Honest Harry The Friendly Used Car Salesman. Ewwww! Sir, put that sedan back in your pocket, please. Nuts, I thought that signature line was hilarious. It came from Trout, after all. I guess now I'll have to change it...but I'm going to wait until Friday to see what he comes up with this time.

It's always nice to say hello, but please remember to use the name of the person to whom you're saying hello! So many times, I've been standing in a store panning around shopping and I hear the 'clickety clack' nearby and a general hello in chat. I have no idea if I'm being addressed or if it's someone else or perhaps the entire room. I get rather annoyed if I have to reset my view, find the person who is speaking to me only to find out that they were really addressing someone else! As for the question of whether or not to move away from your TP point so you don't end up with a pile of avies on your head, I would have to go with moving away a couple of steps after rezzing in. You don't have to barge through a mile away from your TP point, but a quarter spin and a couple of steps usually does the trick. As well, I understand that a lot of people like to preserve their anonymity as best they can, but when I get an non-answer to the question of where someone is from, I tend to get suspicious. In the real world, would someone be reticent to offer that information? I think not. For the most part, I don't really care where someone is from except to make conversation and simple curiosity

A lot of people, including me, are reluctant to give out real world information. That doesn't mean we're Hiding Evil Deeds and Intentions. It just means we value our privacy, and/or have security concerns.

In the real world, would someone be reticent to offer that information? I think not. For the most part, I don't really care where someone is from except to make conversation and simple curiosity This is a very good point. I actually responded to someone the other day because I saw that they had asked a question without specifing who they were talking to, and I knew that I was the only other person there. Then I zoomed my camera back on myself and . . . oops, the avie near me and the person that talked were not the same person Important tip: you can see chat within 20 meters of yourself. Do not assume that the person 2m from you is the person that typed "hello" even if they are the only one you see (I was inside a building, couldn't see anyone but 1 other person; the one that talked was outside behind a hill). I keep minimap and chat bubbles on.. prevents stuff like this ^^ If i see speech in my chatbox, but not over the person next to me I zoom out and find the person using my minimap... good for knowing where people are in general.. and the chat bubble stays for like 30s so you can find them for a good bit of time before they arent as easily identifiable too ^^

I have no problem asking a person where they live. I'll sometimes dig a little deeper if they just give the country, but respect if they make it clear they don't want to be more specific. If you ask me I will tell you that I live in Los Angeles but that's all you'll get about my RL at first. The rest is no ones business.
I have gotten tired of being accused of being an extremely old man because I wont give my age so now I say 25 years old. It's not a lie. I'm not 25 but I figure my av is. On second thought maybe it is a lie, but I don't give a damn, I figure people have no damn business asking this crap in SL.

I'm being honest and not overstating my age and weight. In fact, in the interests of being conservative and not exaggerating, I actually set the number a little low in case circumstances have changed since I last checked.

Just popping in while my mother's in the shower (I'm visiting her). For the record, I'm a Barely Legal Teen that weighs 103 pounds and LOVES to hang out with older men who do nasty things to me.

From: Sylvia Trilling My avatar, like many in SL, is an attractive woman. I don't like it when the guys ask me how old I am as the second or third thing they say. I think it is rude. I notice that I get this more from South Americans, so perhaps it is customary for them and I try to make allowances for cultural differences. I should think "over 18" is sufficient. If they press more than you care for on this issue, how about, "Men who ask women their ages get 'No' for an answer."?

I 'll never understand the need to ask another avatar's age right off the bat. What does it matter in a casual conversation? i don't mind being asked whre I live as much, but even that is annoying early on sometimes. I never ask any personal questions, taking only what information is offered.

From: Brenda Connolly I 'll never understand the need to ask another avatar's age right off the bat. I don't understand the need to ask anything right off the bat. I run on the assumption that I will only receive false information if asked. I always keep in mind that I am friends with the avatar not the person.

The need to ask all those personal questions off the bat ties right into the crop of people who see Second Life as a great big 3D Eharmony combined with a cybersex chat-room. The virtual world denizens are being slowly but surely crowded off the stage.

It just means we value our privacy, and/or have security concerns. Well, certainly there's nothing wrong with anyone wanting to keep their personal details private. Personally, however, I can't imagine why they would. It's the fact that they have "security concerns" which I find the most problematic. What kind of drama has unfolded that would prevent someone from giving out the most obvious and oldest "chat room info" (A/S/L). It just piques my curiousity...and my spider senses

But if someone doesn't want to share info (like me) then that's their prerogative. The reason I don't want to is very simple. I already have a RL. I come here to have a SL.

I am Lexxi Gynoid. Where do I live? Tough question, I have all my land for sale at the moment. How old? In cat year's or human?
