One thing that would help dramatically would be if LL didn't assume all its customers lived in CA. This time of night (UK, BST, GMT+1) is the only time of day I get to log on. So they always schedule these ****ing maintenance events exactly now :(
I've spent well over US$1000 on SL in the last month, so why do I feel like a second class citizen here? It may be ever so convenient in CA to schedule these reboots, with their randomly extended outages, for the same time every day. But I'm getting thoroughly pissed! This is not the level of service I expect from a halfway compentent service provider, and if any passing Linden happens to alight on this thread, I would urge them to take this suggestion on board - spread the s**t around a bit - don't always dump on the folk in Western Europe! Because our patience is a finite commodity, and the bottom line is - if you **** us around enough, we'll find someone else. Anyone else. Any other remotely similar provider who doesn't dump on us.

I love what I've seen of SL, but my patience is wearing thin. It would be wearing less thin if I got to see more of it (and wasn't paying half-region tier fees for the privilege of seeing less of it.)

Others deal with this by having separate server maintenance schedules (like I understand Blizzard does) for Europe and North America. Others that have a worldwide server (like CCP) do it by being located in the middle, rather than at one of the ends, in terms of the time zone spread.

Ha ha! You forgot 6. When Second Life goes to sleep, all its little friends go to sleep.

SLX won't let you shop when SL is down :(

Well I said "dodgy" not "down"... SLX, eBay and Amazon are on my list of "do not enter when tipsy" sites...

Definately feel for you psi, I know I would be more than a little annoyed if it was during my usual playtime as well.

This must be the times where they have seen their network traffic to be at it's lowest, or maybe it's just when everyone strolls into the office and gets one or two cups of coffee in them before going to work. Either way, hang in there :)

Will they post when it's back?

I came home and (optomistically) tried logging on at 12:00 p.m. SL time -- and got a message that it was closed for maintenance, open to employees only, etc.

Tried logging on again just now but got a different message that an Unexpected Error occurred and I should check on-line to see if there's some big problem (or words to that effect). It didn't shut down my sign up board but it sounded ominous.

Or is that to be expected?

Oh it's not based on traffic, it's clearly based on Pacific Time work hours -- everything you see Linden doing reflects that really. That's fine in theory, it's just very hard to do it that way when you are running a worldwide server.

I'm not a typical LL basher, but this really puzzles me. I figured out in my first couple of weeks that SL rarely gets back online within the time given. Hasn't LL realized that?

I'm not complaining about how long they're down.....Please LL take your time to get it right! I just don't understand why at this point they don't automatically add an extra hour or two to their expected time. It would really save a lot of bitching. Well, not really, but it'd save a lot of bitching about this.

I think that the paid members should be reimbursed in some way for all the lost time that they have paid for with all this down time . .. just my opinion

Problem is they dont get it right, every update or new client introduces new useless components to SL rather than focusing on the many bugs we've had to live with for ages. I'd like to see many script functions... function, rather than get a fancy realistic sky. I'd rather have working alpha textures than a voice chat that one can use skype, teamspeak and other programs to acomplish far more ealisy. And lastly, I'd like to be able to be able to get ON when they say they will be done with an update, rather than wait an additional two hours and expect exactly the same issues as when I was on yesterday.

Yes, I totally back up the European rant. I understand that americans aren't that bothered by it and for them it's just oh-la-la-so-f-what.
I am a truly patient person but suddenly the game I used to play seems so tempting and troublefree. Maybe because their downtime lasted for 10 seconds each while it restarted?:P Live updates, less pissed people. And yes, I am sane and I do realize that this here needs to be taken down for maintenance but oh dear lord why the hell won't they just take it down for a few days and fix the whole bloody mess instead of wiping away the few hours of europeans gametime. Lucky for me, I decided to wait and see before going premium and buying land. And yea, haven't been in this game for long but problems come often. Too often. There was actually a period with no relaxed game sessions. So yeah, bright side, it's now theoretically possible to get through one day of playing without issues.

End of rant.

I do apologize for snapping out like that. I've had a very rough day through which I looked forward to getting home, putting kid to sleep and finally tinker on with my prim project. No luck, have waited here for two hours and an hour until bed:(

*sigh* well, have a cookie, guys.. Might get hungry waiting.

The one thing about all the bitching is that usually the ones who come to use the forums, and voice their opinions, are in actuality a small percentage of the player population. Which is one reason why nothing ever seems to get taken too seriously by the game provider.

I'm well aware of that Covisha (sigh). I can read it in the 100,000 other posts mentioning this. It wasn't the point of my post.

At least any bugs that's popping up are doing it while the grid's being service. If I was a tech that was working on the thing, I would put an estimated time a lot later then what was posted. If things got done sooner, the grid would be opened sooner.

if LL didn't have such an abysmal record in keeping to their own deadlines we would all be in game and happy!

this is hardly a one off

Just a little e-mail
08-22-2007 13:03
I'd just like to get a little e-mail message when they're back...so I'd stop obsessively hanging out here.

Then again, maybe I wouldn't stop hanging out here since I have RW stuff I'm avoiding (house-cleaning, laundry, lawn-mowing).

I confess, I don't even know how all the server networking stuff happens - it's just a sort of voodoo to me. I pays my money, and I assume LL sacrifice the requisite chickens :)

But it can't be impossible to schedule these things at different times of the day. This happened last Wednesday at the same time, it happened the week before that, one evening (might have been Wednesday - I wasn't keeping count,) at the same time.

This is a bad time of day for me. I know I'm a small cog in the machine, but there are a lot of other small cogs who find it a bad time. If this field needs manuring (and I have little conception of the the technical whys and wherefores,) it would be more equitable all round to spread the s**t a bit while doing it.

Even with a limited understanding of server technology, I know that these events could be easily rescheduled to spread the inconvenience instead of dumping it on everyone in my timezone.

Weirdest thing is, I do not know why I still play this game. Or as a matter of fact, why I spend the only few hours of my day that are completely mine, sitting here trying to not get annoyed. Watching the clock seeing doom come in shape of bedtime, meaning another long day of things I do not want to do and night when maybe, just *maybe*, I'd get in. Or sit here again watching the time pass. Eh. I feel old.

I think maybe its because Linden like to keep to "normal" office hours in their TZ.

Not that its a 24/7 always online virtual reality system of course.

I dont blame them if thats how they want to do it, but it does seem like its more of a game for them than it is for us!
