I'm not sure, Hate. Honestly I think there's nothing wrong with taking on an alt of the opposite sex just to see what life is like on the other side of the fence. If I want to go out as a guy, dance for an hour or two with a pretty lady with NO promises of any future relationship (ships passing in the night) what's wrong with that? Hell, what's wrong with me being a male avatar and having a female SL wife? People pretend to be lions, robots, children; what's wrong with pretending to be the opposite sex, especially if there's a zero chance of ever meeting in RL to complicate stuff?

Yes I understand that there are human emotions behind every avatar, but if I want to be a man, I honestly don't understand what's wrong with it if I keep it all relative.

I made a male avvy (Suitably outfitted from bare rose now... i love that place XD) just to see if things were different for a guy in SL... I was surprised at the differences o.o

Both of you shut up. My Seahawks can barely maintain a lead in the NFC West. Until Sunday they were only three games ahead of a team that hasn't won a SINGLE GAME!!!
Apropo of nothing, I would like to point out that the Red Sox are in the World Series again. Sorry, I can't help myself.

And that I do agree with.

I guess it's all about the motives. If you're doing it as a lark, with a bunch of people looking on, it's different. No?

So what if I dressed up as a man in RL (if I could get away with, which I seriously doubt,) smoked a hundred cigarettes to roughen my voice, learned how to walk, and went out on the town with some friends just to see if I could do it? If I get caught out, who looks like the fool? Me, or the girl? If I don't get discovered, and we end up kissing for a slow Journey song and part ways at the end of the night, without having exchanged telephone numbers (or even, in my case, real names) who does it REALLY hurt?

The girl has absolutely no idea that I'm really female. She never will because I'll never go back to that bar. I'm not hurt; I just had a fun evening out. I can go back to my RL as a woman without batting an eyelash. My friends have watched the whole thing. Hopefully I would have picked a girl to dance with that would at least have a sense of humor about it and therefore not be SO TRAUMATIZED that she'd never dance with another guy again, that is, IF she ever found out.

Everyone knows that we don't look like our avatars. It's permanent Halloween around here.

In RL? You could get killed doing that. See: Real Life.

Um. Yeah. I have a better chance of getting killed while driving my car. I'm not sure that I would actually go to a bar that I would potentially get killed at, sorry.

They deserve to be there. The Cleveland series was great. I hope their bats are still as active against Colorado.

Kinda like the Crying Game, but backwards? And with more ashtray smell.

Imagine that you're the girl, and you catch on. Then you notice a group of people nearby shooting you glances and sniggering. Then you find the tiny transmitter and know that the've heard every personal and intimate thing you've said about yourself. No harm done?

I guess the question is, is it OK to make a public spectacle of someone if they never know it?

Yes, and in SL, you're male alt might have just picked up a girl run by a RL guy. So I suppose you're right.

You've got me thinking more on this though. It is definitely not as black and white as I had originally thought. Hmmmm

I was referring to the real case of a woman that pretended to be a man, dated another woman, some people found out, and killed her.

I've seen Boys Don't Cry too. The difference is that the cross-dressing woman had a very real relationship with her girlfriend, and they lived in a very narrow-minded town. Gay people are tortured and killed around the world: in the US, Iran, etc. Thankfully I live in a fairly open-minded community. If I did this in RL, it would be for one night, maybe 2 hours maximum, and not in a red-necky dangerous bar. I couldn't get away with being a redneck anyway. I refuse to wear a mullet wig. ;)

@Hate: See what I mean? The "she" that I'm dancing with could very well be a "he" and I'd have no idea. Re: the situation in RL.... hopefully my friends aren't TOTAL asshats that they'd sit there sniggering and pointing. I wouldn't bring the sniggering/pointing bunch of friends to the bar in the first place.

I do, did, and still do! :) My issue is not with the RP nature of SL, but with putting someone in a humiliating situation (which implies a group of onlookers), without consent, whether they know it or not.

That is the big caveat emptor about any interpersonal actions here. You just don't know for sure who or what the other person really is.

Yup, I'm firmly in the "take people as they present themselves" camp. Even when I sus out a contradiction, I ignore it as best I can.

I understand what you're saying and I do agree that it would be quite embarrassing for the girl to find out that people had been listening in on what she had thought would be a private conversation. I guess my point is that I really don't see it as "humiliating."

Let's turn the tables for a second: If I am a RL woman dancing in a RL bar with a RL (I think) man, there is NO WAY that I can consider myself to be in a private situation. Everything I say can be potentially heard by other people. If I find out somehow that this "man" is actually a "woman" and that people have been listening in to the conversation, yes, I'd be pissed off, but I'm not going to go call the moral police. I'd probably throw my drink in "his" face and walk out of the bar with some choice language trailing behind me. I'd call my friends, "woe is me, I even dance with jerks who aren't really men" but you know what? A few hours or maybe a day later, it would be something to totally laugh about.

Hell, guess what? I've been deported from a RL country on a RL airplane with RL handcuffs, and if THAT isn't fucking humiliating, I don't know what is. I now consider it one of my more priceless stories and laugh every time I think about it.

Well, you're clearly level headed and have a good sense of humour. But not everyone would react like you. And that still doesn't address my very personal believe that it's wrong even if she never finds out. But that's personal opinion, and I respect that you have your own differing opinion.

Heh. Try eating off of those little airplane food trays while wearing a set of steel bracelets. Was nothing, really. I was in a foreign country illegally. :p The humiliating part was being the last person to board the plane and having every single eyeball stare at me as I walked down the aisle.

But we digress, and seriously, LOL. To the OP: SL isn't a matchmaking service, it's a social environment. Do with it what you will, but don't blame the environment if you're unhappy with the people you've met.

[Edit: Chris: Sorry, that's a need to know factoid. Ray: LOL!]
