The original poster asked, what is wrong with this Second Life world.

I see nothing wrong with it other than the inhabitants most of the time.

Say what??
I hate to disappoint you, but I'm not Ricardo's alt. I just happen to be someone that agrees with him. Oops! Guess I too am in for it now.
It was just an interesting choice for a first post, to join in the same war of words he seemed to have covered on his own. Whoever you are, welcome to Resident Arguments, I mean Answers.

LOL! Well I dressed up my alt as a guy last night and headed to a classy jazz club. Dude, it takes guts to ask even virtual women to dance. Out of the 6 I asked to dance, only 2 said yes, and the first left after 10 minutes. The second was a lovely lady and we had a good time. Rejection 4 out of 6 times, though, that's not good odds. It hurts.... it hurts...

Nope, you can agree with whomever you like. Ricardo is not entirely wrong, he's just overstating the case.

But, if you're going to criticize Ava's word precision in his defense, you might take a look at this statement:

NOT EVERYONE but MANY, SOME, MOST do.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Heh, I hadn't seen that, guess I was a bit late pointing it out. :o

As for him overstating the case, that might be true, but as long as no-one can provide any solid figures, we're all just speculating.

Solanghe - guys only. Errr....girls dressed as guys and guys only. Get a male shape and skin for Solanghe or bust out your alt. If the women on here can go shopping with guys in drag, then you all can man up (heh - I made a pun) and go raise hell with us guys.

Yes on the Pale Ale, though. I'm an IPA man, myself, but a good Pale Ale will work just fine.

Weelllllllll, alright. But I warn you...my alt is a hottie. You other guys won't get ANY play at all. Fair Warning. Muhahahahaha.

Congratulations - you might be a slut, but in the best sense of the word. You're perfect girlfriend material.

WHOOO!

Sol, lol. Made a rhyme. It is so not as easy being a guy as you think it is. Women are so used to morons approaching them, even morons who aren't newbs with attachments, that they are likely to be rude or difficult to approach at all. That's not anything negative about them - I'd have the same response if I got approached all day long by idioits saying, "Oi, Oi, buttsecks!!" Not all women are like that - but if someone is shy or has difficulty approaching women in RL, then that is unlikely to be improved in SL. Go to a dance club and ask someone to dance - you are as likely to be ignored or told to go to hell as you are to get a positive response. After a while, you just kick back in a chair and enjoy the music and to hell with dancing.

I'm just saying, it's easy to talk a big game. On the other hand, if you show up with your alt and want to go see what happens, I am SO down with that. Just keep an IM open so we can see how you do. I'll give pointers which will probably backfire, but which wil make me scream with laughter when you try them.

Honestly, the potential for hilarity is absolutely through the roof. Forget the sex. Just get someone to make out with you.

Trout,

Have you considered the poor girl who's being made a "fool" of with this little experiment? I dunno, my suggestion of being you for a night might be a bit better - at least it would be consentual.

I'm just saying...

Nope, still looks like you are saying that most people who say they aren't here for sex are just lying.

Funny, you go from stating that, according to Ricardo, SL has NOTHING to offer outside of cybersex (your words), to repeating Ricardo's words, pretending that was your initial argument, by saying "MOST people who say they aren't here for sex are just lying". Notice the words "nothing" and "most". The first implies an absolute, the second doesn't.

Do you see how ridiculous your line of reasoning is? You're basically invalidate your first argument here while being condescending at the same time.

Bravo.

Hi Conrad...

(A) Welcome to the forums. :)

(B) Sorry for appearing condescending, it was just a response to Ricky's really over the top attack on me when all I did was dispute his statement.

(C) Ricardo's argument as a whole made it seem to me (and obviously others) that by "most" he meant the vast majority... as in almost all, not just 51%. To say that almost all people who claim they aren't here for sex are lying, to me that equates to saying SL is about sex and nothing more, hence my argument against this idea.

Now Ricardo seems to be stating that by "most" he means "some". To me, "some" equates to "a few"... meaning in his experience, he has come across a few or even several people who claimed one thing but were in fact being untruthful. If he meant that, I would have no problem with it. The thing is, I don't think he meant that. We could attribute a single statement to a miscommunication, to poor word choice, but his other arguments support my perception that he is making broad sweeping generalizations regarding the honesty of people who claim SL isn't about sex for them.

If this really was a miscommunication, a simple misunderstanding regarding the meaning of the word "most", then I certainly apologize to Ricardo. I agree that there are people in SL who are dishonest, and it would seem that Ricardo has met some of them. My only dispute was with what I perceived as a major overgeneralization questioning the honesty of anyone who says they aren't here for sex.

What's the difference between being me and being a male alt? Actually I have. In retrospect, I backed down on the whole sex thing. You have a point, though. It's really not fair to whomever is dancing with the alt/guy. I wouldn't condone leading someone into a relationship, but a little dancing and kissing? hmmm. Maybe you're right. The whole thing was a bit of a gag intended to illustrate that from a guy's perspective, it isn't all a rose garden.

Thanks for a fresh perspective, Hate. I apologize. I ran a little too far with an idea. I wouldn't want anyone's feelings to be hurt by anything I've done. Maybe this wasn't such a hot idea.

How about I put on a female form and you put on a male one and you try to pick me up while I tell you to buzz off? That way everyone knows what the deal is, except the innocent bystanders who are unlikely to be injured. That would be world class wierd. I sort of like the idea just for that reason. Trust me, though. You aren't getting anywhere with me. I'm unattainable. Well. Maybe I'll make out with you a little, but keep your hands to yourself, Buster.

Both of you shut up. My Seahawks can barely maintain a lead in the NFC West. Until Sunday they were only three games ahead of a team that hasn't won a SINGLE GAME!!! Don't even get me started.

Well, your point is admirably made, Trout.

I kinda get annoyed when I see people posting up conversations without the named target's consent, as I recently did elsewhere. Your idea about watching some poor girl being a subject of an experiment bugged me on that level too.

Well, if your sincere about meeting her, then it's a world of difference. If you're doing it as an exeriment to show to others for a laugh, then nothing.

Even something as simple as receiving a friend request, should it happen, would be extremely awkward I'd think, in the latter context.

OK - When we go fishing if Sonia is there, we'll hit on her.

You know what, I'm coming to the conclusion that there is absolutely nothing wrong with "this Secondlife world". Nothing at all. It's goofy, enriching, hilarious, and full of some really awesome people who have made me a better person just by knowing them. Those confined to bed, wheelchairs, or enduring the pain of their physical conditions can be completely free to walk, fly, flirt, create, and escape from their daily routines. We can express ourselves artistically, through music, or just by typing a few simple words that we may not be able to speak in RL. Of course there is sex and there are idiots who will try to ruin it, but on the whole, the balance tips in favor of this being a wonderful experience.

I vote for "nothing wrong" where's the poll?

I'm not sure, Hate. Honestly I think there's nothing wrong with taking on an alt of the opposite sex just to see what life is like on the other side of the fence. If I want to go out as a guy, dance for an hour or two with a pretty lady with NO promises of any future relationship (ships passing in the night) what's wrong with that? Hell, what's wrong with me being a male avatar and having a female SL wife? People pretend to be lions, robots, children; what's wrong with pretending to be the opposite sex, especially if there's a zero chance of ever meeting in RL to complicate stuff?

Yes I understand that there are human emotions behind every avatar, but if I want to be a man, I honestly don't understand what's wrong with it if I keep it all relative.

And that I do agree with.

I guess it's all about the motives. If you're doing it as a lark, with a bunch of people looking on, it's different. No?
