From: Nimue Jewell Yamm is a really well situated sim, and seems to be developing well already, so I'm not surprised that the auctions there are on the high end. Seems like Yamm was on the high end in the first day's auctions too. (I'm in Shalim, btw. ) Hi Nimue, you talked earlier today with TexasKat, my better half That's why I mentioned "you chose well." Yes, Yamm is starting to develop a little bit at a time. Braun was putting up a terrific looking sculpture earlier today. The buildings will take some work. I started with my Skidz belt this morning and have a ways to go. I'm actually delighted they didn't put super high quality textures in the builds. It gives people a reason to pick some up in SL they like..keeping the SL economy purring. I know some of the other folks in this discussion have talked about the buildings looking the same. They were like that several thousand years ago. What made each building distinctive was the interior and to a lesser extent the exterior. If each building is roughly 211 prims, then that leaves 240+/- to work with. Given how much quality furniture is now made from sculpties, we should see an increase in their use in these low prim environments. Textures will also be a real differentiator in the housing. I think the other differentiator will also be how people use the rooftops. I really like how they all have decks and open spaces up top. This was good design and calls for columns, hanging plants, etc...and yes, the Chinese invented fireworks ages ago and suspect we will see some great fireworks displays. Anyways...didn't need to ramble on this topic. Delighted you purchased in Shalim and we'll see you in the Harbor.

From: Nimue Jewell I didn't find the textures for the houses. Considering how much modding the houses really need (if you want to use one to try to stay with the theme) having the textures would be really handy. The construction of the houses is kind of weird, and almost seems to be designed to make them hard to mod... as well as increasing the texture overhead. For example, they seem to use custom floor textures for each floorplan that combine floor and balcony textures on the same prim, rather than having a floor texture and a balcony texture. They may save a couple of prims per house, but given how primmy the houses are I'm inclined to doubt that was the motivation, and they quadruple the number of textures you need to download. I also think they might have been better doing what they did with the atoll continent: putting the base houses in the Linden library, along with a set of textures, instead of having everyone who wanted in on it bloat their inventory with dozens of objects and hundreds of textures right from the start.

From: Michael Linden Yeah, a number of the auction parcels for sale were left with "0" for autoreturn. I'm setting them to "1" as I see them. No littering! They'll gradually unlitter as they are won at auction, anyhow. Michael, any chance we can get the moles to do curb cuts? Some of the properties that have high walls/curbs on their border make it a little awkward to walk onto the property from the street. We had to elevate our building a little more than I would have liked to make it easier to walk in from the street without a drop/stumble. If two or three of the blocks on the wall could be lowered a little bit, that would be great.

Hi Jean. I thought that was Texaskat was your partner. As for the houses, I agree the textures make them a little hard to mod (re the floors and trim work) but am having pretty good luck making changes so far. I was also able to do away with several extra prims without damaging the look of the building. I agree that interior textures, furnishings, and customization are a great way to personalize the parcels but maintain the exterior theme. I like that the houses all look so much alike. I just think having the exterior house textures would have made it easier for people to mod (or build from scratch) something that blends on the exterior. As for buying additional textures to keep the economy going, no worries there. I suddenly have a use for several texture packs I've had my eye on, but didn't have a good excuse to buy.

Hi Nimue, agree on the customization of the builds. We may want to start a thread on what we learn in doing the customizing for those that are interested and if anyone is interested. I have to do some RL work but will be back later tonight if you want to give that thread some thought. Don't want to add to our tasking load but if it helps people, we ought to think about it. Yep on textures, TexasKat has been thinking the same thing

Not a bad idea at all to break the discussion of the houses out of the general thread.

Maybe build up a free "alternative texture" pack to encourage people to mix and match the houses more.

I think they've handled the timing very intelligently: the longish delay between that batch announced for Tuesday morning, and any other batches, would act to get people to think: 'who knows when the second wave will come....it could be in a week....meanwhile everyone I know already has a parcel...I've got to BID UP, BID UP, BID UP!!!....I can't wait for the second wave...' Etc. (I'm not being sarcastic---I sincerely DO think this roll-out has been handled with a lot of savvy and smarts.)

new openspace sim policy

Gee, you think LL dumping more sims into their estate has anything to do with the OpenSim policy change announcement?

From: Nimue Jewell Awww...don't give up just yet. Well, I did end up putting in a bid before leaving for work. (I don't like bidding far ahead of the auction time, but I HAD to go in to the office, today). I haven't even checked yet...my bid was at the low end of winning auction amounts, so I think it's highly unlikely to have succeeded. But at least I stuck my toe in the water!

Harbor District - First shop up - The Shoe Boutique
10-28-2008 06:41
I haven't been completely through the entire Harbor District - Shalim and Yamm, but one shop is already up and running. If I missed other's I apologize.
Calveen Kline has a Shoe Boutique up at Shalim (164,61). He did a terrific job of modifying an existing Nautilus build to open it up. Taking out the second floor and tastefully opening one side gives it a whole new look.
Kudos to Calveen and others working on their buildings to stay in-theme and starting to create a resident content-rich Nautilus environment.

Can anyone confirm if the Nautilus Freebies contained those pots in the market place? Especially the red one with Phillip on it? I took a (very) quick look last night but didn't see any.

Cool! I love snorkelling in RL and scuba in SL. Let me get my fins on and I'm off.

Nautilus - did not get building with plot
10-28-2008 07:59
Hi -
I won the auction on a plot in one of Nautilus regions. The plot has a great building on it - I want to enable autoreturn but since the building's owner is Gov Linden, I think that it will get returned.
I'd like to keep the building as it is and ideally would like a copy since I did not get one. I looked in the marketplace and only found the textures - do we get a copy of the buildings? If not, how do we handle autoreturn?
Thanks -2fast

Thanks -2fast As Ee said, they are individually boxed in the crates in the marketplace. If you can't find them drop me an IM inworld, and I'll give you a lm or meet you over there.

From: Ee Maculate They're all in the marketplace.. try right clicking on the crates to start with... I think a couple of these are set incorrectly. There are some pieces there that are set to sell their contents for L$0 (like everything else) but don't contain anything. They should either be set to sell a copy (so you get the piece) or get some contents..
