From: Marianne McCann You missed the notice. It was all in the blog a good long time ago now.
Mari (Who applied, but was not accepted into mole-dom) Thanks Mari. I did read the original post but completely missed what it was about. Reading it again a bit more closely. I think what confused me is that I missed the mention of new areas but thought it was about refurbishing the existing mainland. There was also no mention of putting the theme land up for auction. I took it as being a great thing for the mainland and perhaps it will turn out to be. Dnali returns to snuggling up on her sim happy about all the unsung creative heroes and heroines that make SL something other than an empty wasteland. Time will tell...

From: Michael Linden But let's hope everyone builds a nice Nautilus-ish building on their parcel! You really just don't get it.

From: Qie Niangao Per Jack's office hours, auction is still scheduled to start tomorrow (Friday). I've been having moments of compulsive arithmetic lately: There are 30 sims in Nautilus City Island, of which 8 double-primmed ones are to be auctioned--or, the equivalent of 4 full sims of land area. With full-sim Mainland tier at US$195, I figure they're getting about US$25/month/sim of tier out of this deal, if we include the 22 Linden content sims. Should one count those sims in the average? Well, a private Estate would have to pay for its citadel and temple and crash sites and etc. Maybe they could get by with OpenSpaces, so maybe the comparable cost isn't a full US$295/mo for those sims. But it wouldn't be zero, either. I'm not arguing that LL shouldn't populate new lands with fresh content. It's just compulsive arithmetic. (Extra credit: Calculate the Profit on LDPW Mole wages for the hours spent making Nautilus City.) I didn't think about the unsold regions. 4 sims paid for by tier broken out across 13.5 effective sims (assuming the 22 unsold regions are all openspaces) comes out to $57.78 per sim per month. If you account for the Linden owned prims in the sims that do get sold, it's even less than that. And, like you calculated, if any of the unsold sims are full sims, the numbers go down even further. When Bay City came about, I saw it as a nice showcase area that LL could offer at a monthly loss for the promotional value of it. Nautilus City, and the suggestion that other themed areas are coming, really suggests that LL can operate rather well on significantly reduced tier. $295/month is the barrier that keeps a lot of projects from getting built. Lower the barrier, and we should see a lot more grand works get accomplished.

This may have been brought up all ready. I just found two full sims just south of Nautilus both with auction ids and showing purple on the map. I wonder if these will go up tomorrow too. Might be a good strategy. http://slurl.com/secondlife/Alphubel/228/21/32

This would only be true if all of the land was owned by only 4 people. With 8 people it goes up to 33.33 per sim, and so on...

Right, that's always a problem with comparing Linden revenue between Mainland and Estates: there are lots of variables if one takes into account all the possible ownership tier levels. To include the membership fee? If so, on the annual, quarterly, or monthly payment schedule? That bonus 512? The weekly stipend? As for percentage of "overhead" area retained for Linden content, there are many ways to look at that, too. Historically, Sansara and to a lesser extent Heterocera had a relatively large amount of Linden surface area for stuff like roads, protected water, Linden Village, Pooley, InfoHubs, Welcome Areas, etc. With the Korean continent, that decreased dramatically, and even further in the eastern continents. In this view, the 22 new sims of Linden content might be seen as just a concentration of all the stuff that's missing from the newer continents.

Aren't the auctions supposed to start some time today?
I'm eagerly awaiting with baited breath to see where they end up.

I'm eagerly awaiting with baited breath to see where they end up. I had thought the first auctions were going to be finishing today - that is, people would be able to start moving in today - but it looks like today's the day (if they keep on schedule) that the auctions start showing up on the auction page. I'd guess it'll be Sunday before anybody can move in...

Yeah, there is an amazing amount of stuff down there. I finally bought Siggy's swimming HUD last night, and some scuba gear and had a great time exploring the open waters around Nautilus.

A word of warning to anyone exploring in the de Ruyter area. Be sure to wear protective gear as the jellyfish are aggressive. They nearly sank my sub.

I wish the map info was available though. I can't log in to see which parcels these are.
