From: Nimue Jewell I think too, that the houses are big, but the exterior stairways suggest either combinations of private quarters upstairs with a small family business downstairs (I am working out something like that in my mind for my own place) or extended/multiple family dwellings. Excellent points Nim. That approach is what many shop owners and merchants did in earlier times. Sidebar: we researched some of the buildings that were sunk in the Port Royal, Jamaica earthquake, and this is the approach many of the shop owners took. I had not thought about the sunken wreckage...your Nautilus exploring is paying dividends. You may be right. Nautilus started as a seafaring culture before becoming more urban, especially with the Citadel. I need to go read Magellan's wiki to get a better handle on the history.

Sorry to post again so soon, but I was out and about this morning and I was so inspired by what some residents are doing that I thought I would take and share a few pics. For all that doesn't show resident building on Nautilus at its best, there is something else going on out there too. A garden I found Lovely home build spanning 2 parcels Market place (build in progress, but looking good!) New sculpture installation

From: Jean Swashbuckler All-in-all it was a good starting point and helps prevent a ghost town or multi-time period collage of buildings. Also, for Nautilus sims that had builds on them at the outset, they seem to be keeping to theme a little better than those that did not include buildings on the parcels. I definitely agree that it was a smart move on the part of LL to provide the buildings. And after all, there is nothing to prevent builders from creating and offering smaller variations on the theme (though with higher ceilings!) if there is a demand for such. Good point about the effect of pre-existing buildings on NC sims, versus the sims sold with empty parcels. I'd hope that the Nautilus team is watching that situation (if indeed it turns out to consistently make a noticeable difference in what people end up doing with their parcels.)

I took a wander through and around the marketplace in Nautilus - Shalim today, and I noticed a 1024 parcel set for sale for a staggering 142,000L$ (138.7L$/sq.m). I'm guessing this sort of silly pricing is common there, or did I run into an extortionate anomaly?

I'm guessing this sort of silly pricing is common there, or did I run into an extortionate anomaly? There are several land-flippers who bought at insanely high prices, and who are trying to sell at even higher prices. Who they think is going to pay that much is beyond me. Hopefully, after a few months they will get tired of paying tier and losing money, and they will lower the prices to something reasonable.

There are some "lower" prices out there, but even they are in the 70,000L$ range. Thing is, many (not all) of the current bidders are land traders. They bid to get the parcels and then set them for resale, often at a substantial markup. I know just today I had my eye on a second parcel. I was outbid (I had a pretty hard limit set for myself) and within 15 minutes of the auction close, the parcel was already set for sale...with a L$20,000+ mark-up. Ah well. **edit From: Ceera Murakami There are several land-flippers who bought at insanely high prices, and who are trying to sell at even higher prices. Yeah...what she said. Sadly, I think the tier burden is so light compared to the potential profit, I am afraid many of them will hold these parcels for a long time.

I'm guessing this sort of silly pricing is common there, or did I run into an extortionate anomaly? Hi Skell, thanks for posting the question. It all depends on how you look at it. Shalim was one of the first sims with 26 parcels auctioned off in Nautilus. There are only 4 parcels for sale in Shalim today, and yes, one is at $142,000. This particular parcel is one of five parcels that borders the northern shoreline and has excellent views including the horn tower and plaza underneath it. Shalim, together with Yamm, anchor the Harbor District. Two markets, the drydock, a larger dock, fishing piers, a plaza and the horn tower are part of the protect land in this part of Nautilus. There is also quite a bit of protected parkland to the west and on Shalim's southern shore. In addition, one of the property owners has purchased a number of properties and added more park space with sculptures. Like real estate in RL and SL, the price might be negotiable...but the initial auction prices for Shalim were indeed high. The current property owner has a number of parcels for sale in Nautilus. He is working to keep them within the theme which many of us in Nautilus for the long haul appreciate. While this particular parcel might be considered high, so would the two we purchased in Yamm. There are parcels that have sales prices more than this parcel in other parts of Nautilus. This probably didn't answer your question, however, there are parcels selling for more than this amount in Nautilus - both at auction and in the first sale after auction. All Nautilus parcels are 1,024 and cannot be joined or divided. One parcel bought at auction today in Yarikh was purchased for L$150,000. The property you asked the question about has excellent views and is in a very good location. I'll leave it up to others to draw whatever conclusions they do about the price.

I paid a lot to have a land in nautilus, but I'm totaly happy with my purchase. I have double prims, a nice view and finaly I can say that I own a land (I used to buy in private islands, and unfortunately estate owners don't stay too much online).
Some people talk about maintaining the houses. well, i can understand that but... if we pay a lot for a land in nautilus, I think that it is hard to ask for more "restrictions". we already have 2: no subdivision, no terraforming... That's enough..no?

Sadly, I think the tier burden is so light compared to the potential profit, I am afraid many of them will hold these parcels for a long time. I had the same experience. I'd thought 'why not get the extra prims from another parcel in the sim.' But the prices zoomed up in the final moments. In the end I decided that working with a budget of 468 prims will be good for me (and in truth that should be okay. I'm not interested in building a skybox there, after all.) You make an excellent point about the low tier making it likely that the speculators will hold onto the parcels for months. We can only hope that with the recent LL actions against extortionists, the flippers won't be able to get away with erecting huge towers and such in an effort to induce us to pay up.

From: Perre Anatine ...with shadows enabled..please explain!! Perre.. It's using an alpha-test client code stub that can only be activated for an extremely limited number of very high-end graphics cards, and only with the Windows version of the SL client. 95% or so of us can't activate that test feature, and likely never will be able to until and unless we upgrade to the very latest Windows based hardware.

Do you suppose someone at LL flicked a switch or something, maybe decided to change the battery. The lag in Nautilus (Anath, Hannibal etc) has pretty much disappeared..everything's suddenly running smoothly. Gasps in amazement..reaches for the credit card..maybe I'll buy after all.. Perre..

I only use it for photos. With my 8600 GT PCI-E 512mb I still only get maybe 3fps with shadows enabled, as opposed to the usual 25fps I get with nearly everything maxed out on the regular viewer. I hope to get a 9000 series card with my next tax return, I've heard it runs ok on those.
