A very cogent analysis---I suspect these people really haven't thought it through as clearly as you've done here.

(I did buy [at auction!] a parcel today, paying more than I'd wanted to. But...I've got some ideas I'd like to try out, and my birthday occurred recently, and I just decided to treat myself.

(Though I'm in the land business myself, in a small way, I never considered paying USD250 or more [for even a double-primmed 1024] in the hopes of selling it for more. Doesn't seem prudent to me. But...I wish them all well....)

How much did you pay then?

/me would bet that they tried to get it onto the slurl/land store maps but something went wrong..

If so, they will need to find some other punishment for you. I can send them suggestions, if you'd like. :P

I went exploring yesterday. As someone else said, the ceilings on the houses are too low, could see them even sitting on the floor and could not walk up the outside stairs, had to fly up.

I think the houses are too big for the size of the plot, it gives it a suburbian look on which I am not keen, rows of houses pretty close to each other. Just my personal opinion.

Will go to the market place and have a look around.

I felt the same way, and I was in a child avatar at the time, I'd hate to see how it felt with the usual giant avatars most people have.

So, I started rebuilding one of the houses, raised the ceiling and shrunk the footprint a bit (although that was mostly to eliminate the tiny prims the designer used to fill in the gaps)

Has waiting a while during the land sales put you off buying into Nautilus ?

I did consider buying property around the harbour, some of the marginal harbour plots looked good, the prices were astronomical but then we always knew they would be. Since then the map being greyed out has frustrated me and I haven't a clue what's for sale anymore. Really the only place I'm still interested in now is Hannibal, one building to be precise, and if I'm honest I really don't care if I get it or not (my trust in Linden Labs has been in decline over the last week or so).

As the map is still greyed out I'm having to check regularly to see when the plot becomes available. Today I dropped in on my prospective buy only to find two towers (how ironic) peering up over the horizon...

..is it not enough that the owners should ruin the surrounding landscape below that they feel they need to ruin the view for the folks up top as well...sigh!!

A couple of days ago I walked around the area and snapped a few pics..here's how it could look folks..

...isn't that beautiful.

I said it once before..take those pics now folks because it won't stay that way for long.

Only two? That's actually an improvement. For a while there were eight towers in that sim, all of them blatantly modern, and several using megaprims in their construction. They belonged to a couple of land flippers who were asking fairly high prices for those parcels, likely in hopes that someone would buy them out so they could delete the ugly builds to improve the view. Looks like the ones that use Megas may have been deleted by the Lindens, at least...

Here is how it looked just a few days ago:

I just looked, and only the two black towers are there now, and those two lots are no longer for sale. The rest of the lots, almost all of which belong to the owner of those two black towers, are for sale in the L$130K range - higher than what most of the Nautilus parcels sell for.

Good point. I seem to remember just one last night but did not get up to Magon where there were 4 the previous day. We did see a low flying skybox at about 100 meters and a blood fountain was a nice touch. And the pink trees did indeed glow in the night.

What was fun was four of us met up in the Harbor district last night, a little bit by chance. Cynebald was first. We learned that all four of us had horses after we chatted for a while. A despite the late hour, and even though we would pick up an hour overnight, we decided it would be great to see how good Nautilus was for riding.

So off we went, trotting at first and then at full gallops. Nim, Cynebald, and TexasKat led us along the south shore. Some of the sim crossings were quite funny when running at full gallop. The best sim exchanges were when we kept to the open sims along the shoreline. LL and the moles put in hiking paths in these sims which worked great for horse racing as well.

We arrived in Shahar and too all of our dismay found quite a number of the flippers had embarked in building a quite comic look and feel for the sim. I suppose they want someone to buy their builds out or they are truly self-absorbed.

Almost thought of running off to buy one of the excellent SL Trebuchet's. NOTE to SL weapons builders. Some of the medieval Trebuchets are terrific looking. It would be great if you could build some of the early Roman, and better yet, Greek catapults or ballistas that fit nicely on 1,024 parcels. It looks like we will have to use the SL weapons cowammo since thankfully SL does not enable push objects in Nautilus...but I might be wrong on the Trebuchet requirements. A flaming cowammo would probably draw the ire of SL PEDA, however, the effect at night would be quite spectacular.

But I digress...we found that all four of us riding at full gallop actually did very well following the shorelines. It was fun and helped us get to know each other a little better. It does appear we can use the shorelines and some of the paths for a Nautilus wide race track. We'll have to see if jumping the canal is possible. One other note to Moles, there does not appear to be a path to walk up or ride up to the Citadel. This might be something to think about although we could fly the horses up the wall.

All in all it was a great ride and a lot of fun. We'll have to organize some more rides and see about putting on a few races. We wondered how Chariots will do in Nautilus so if anyone has a Chariot, we would be interested in how they work and where you went.

I've been thinking about this and somewhat regret the dismissive tone I used (though I prefer not to change history by editing; I'd rather explain than change). Anyway, I was wondering if the Nautilus creative team debated the size of the houses and just decided that since they were leaving a lot of open space in the sims, and since there would never be more than four parcels actually touching each other, then making houses that would fill the parcel almost to the borders would be okay.

In practice, it can look pretty crowded. But on reflection, having some parts of the NC sims look very urban, while others remain more park-like, may be a good idea.

It makes for more variety.

Hi Ponsonby, reflection is always a good thing :-)

We agree on the cam issues...but the Nautilus creative team did have some design constraints and appear to have put some good thought into their builds. They needed to ensure the buildings looked appropriate on the 1,024 parcel; had a design reflective of the time--open air with lots of windows, rooftops, and porches with awnings; and provided people who were not builders with something they could put on the parcel quickly. They provided a number of designs and color schemes. All-in-all it was a good starting point and helps prevent a ghost town or multi-time period collage of buildings. Also, for Nautilus sims that had builds on them at the outset, they seem to be keeping to theme a little better than those that did not include buildings on the parcels. I may be wrong because I have not been out and about as much as I would like.

This approach also gives those of us who are builders some time to modify the existing structures or create an entirely in-theme build. If we are not full-time SL builders it will take some time for these to develop due to RL demands. While I was not in Bay City when it started, it seems like it took a while for some of the really terrific builds to begin appearing. This may be the case here.

In our case (RL/SL spouses) we chose to purchase two parcels. We'll keep our two islands in their pirate theme but this gives us a chance to work in an earlier historic theme with some Atlantis ideas thrown in. We also like the opportunity to help support a broader community of residents who want to live, play, and work within the theme. We'll start by modifying the initial builds with new textures and see where it goes from there.

The ride was GREAT fun, and it was good to get to know you and Kat a little better along the way. I'm looking forward to other informal and formal gatherings like that so more of us can get to know each other better (both neighbors and people that just enjoying being there! Nautilus is for everyone on the grid. :) ). Chariot races sound GREAT!

Even though I like the Nautilus houses, and am modding one for myself, your point about them being so big and filling the parcels is well taken, and the same thought has crossed my mind at times too. Had I ended up in one of the eastern sims, particularly with a park view, I would likely have made the house much smaller and used the rest of the parcel as a walled garden. Still, I think the big houses fit when I imagine Nautilus as an ancient, semi arid, urban space. All of the wreckage along the sea beds surrounding the island indicate a great deal of trade, so I don't see it as an agricultural or pastoral space. Making the parcels all 1024's seems to encourage that urban crowding.

I think too, that the houses are big, but the exterior stairways suggest either combinations of private quarters upstairs with a small family business downstairs (I am working out something like that in my mind for my own place) or extended/multiple family dwellings.
