I have been suspended for 7 days! (This is Ryen Jade, Cashuea Gilman is a friends account I am using since he never does). Why? I have no flipping clue! As an added note, Ryen Jade cannot access the forums! From: someone Dear Ryen Jade, Linden Lab individually investigates the circumstances of every Abuse Report we receive. Following a careful review of our server records and logs, we have determined that your recent actions violated the Second Life Community Standards or Terms of Service. The violation in question occurred on December 23, 2004 in the region of Baku. Violation: Community Standards: Rules of Conduct Within Second Life we want to support residents in shaping their specific experiences and making their own choices. Our rules are simple: treat each other with respect and without harassment, adhere to local standards as indicated by simulator ratings, and refrain from any hate activity which slurs a real-world individual or real-world community. The rules of conduct are interpreted with the broadest meaning possible. Discipline While we understand that some violations of the Community Standards may be unintentional or inadvertent, every Second Life Resident is responsible for ensuring that their actions do not disrupt the lives of their fellow Residents. While first offenders will generally receive a simple warning, violations of Community Standards and/or Terms of Service may result in temporary suspension from the community. Repeated violations will result in permanent banning. As a result of this violation, your Second Life account is being temporarily suspended for a period of 7 days. It will return to active status on Thursday, Dec 30, 2004. Recourse If you believe that this notice has been sent in error, or that the details of this incident have not been adequately examined, please address your concerns in an email to abuse-manager@lindenlab.com We will not disclose the identity of Residents who file Abuse Reports. Sincerely, Linden Lab Linden Lab 577 Second Street, Suite 200 San Francisco, CA 94107 Phone 415.243.9000 Fax 415.243.9045 www.secondlife.comI got this about 1 minute ago, and still am wondering why I am being suspended. But eh, I needed some time to play anarchy online, everquest 2, counter-strike source, ect. Oh also, merry christmas! -Ryen Jade P.S. (dont hold me to this, since im pretty mad at this time, I will probably go through with this though) In 7 days, once I get back in world, im putting my land up for sale and hightailing it out of SL. I have been meaning to get around to other things anyway.

A response

Ryan and Wino, I'm making the assumption that my grief experience with you and your friends was the cause - but if you were visiting other places and doing the same thing you did to me, I suppose there may be more to it. Regardless - I think you were successful in acheiving what you were attempting - grief without a word spoken, and actions that are so bizarre that any explaination would make the listener laugh. I'm pretty bummed out - you Negative rated me Ryen, without even an explaination why. I even IMed you to ask you - nicely, even - why... but you refused to respond. If I did something to you, I'd blame myself - but I'm at a complete loss. I'd like to think I'm a pretty cool guy - and I've never neg rated anyone. Hope to keep it that way. Anyway - as everyone knows, there's two sides to every story. So allow me to present our view of what happened. I'm not making any judgements on you whether the punishment was appropriate - just stating the facts. You can decide between you & God how accurate it is. We were having a party - not a large one, but many regular customers of ours were there, and we were all having fun, listening to music. We started to notice several AV's dressed as Mimes started to come in, with blank white protest signs. The mimes weren't doing anything, just coming in, and not saying anything (as I suppose mimes do) I had one of my customers complain that he was being pushed, and looked over to see a much larger group of mimes gathered around one of my regular customers in a circle - almost in an attacking manner - but that's subjective. Several guests started complaining, and asking the mimes why they were attacking this lone customer. No response... I began to get IM's from customers asking me to do something. I asked the mimes to stop harrasing, but no response (again, as mimes do) So, as much as I hate doing it, I started ejecting the mimes. As soon as I began, all hell seemed to break loose, and guests began to complain they were receiving negative rates from the remaining mimes. I acted as quickly as I could, but many people received negative rates before I could eject them all. Within seconds of being free of the Mime infestation, the simulator crashed. The sim usually is very underutilized, and has never been known to crash before. There weren't enough AV's in the sim to warrant a sim crash due to regular load. I was booted out of game, and back to desktop. When I returned, I was told by SL that our simulator was down, and I was being moved to another location. After returning home, most of the regulars had returned (yay, regulars!) And they began going over with each other what happened, and the abuse reports began. Didn't even have time to file one myself - although, at this point - it doesn't look like that's neccesary. So, I guess for this battle - Griefers 1 - Honest Joe's 0. Sucks - but grief really can't seem to be avoided in SL. I sure wish I didn't have to get a negative rate out of the whole thing. But I'm an adult, and I'll live. I totally don't understand why people get off on hurting others, but I guess that's life... second & first. Travis

I was there too, it went down pretty much how Travis said. I don't mind flash mob stuff I find a lot of it funny but neg ratings and crashing sims is not cool and neither is being a bully.

Im guessing we pushed that lil old lady with the walker down too. The one with the /fall script.
We stopped to dance with the fox on our way out the door in a circle. As for the negative rating thing, I recieved a few while I was there, but I wouldnt waste the $3 it cost to neg anyone back.
After we got back to our HQ I changed and thought id head back, looked like people were having fun.
A game full of people without a sense of humor. Did you really think we were gonna stay there forever until we drove all your partiers away? We aint like that, we wanted to get a chuckle, maybe make a few people laugh and move on.
As for attacking people. That never happened and you know it.

From: Lars Bismark I was There I hear "LeapFrog" has games for your age group as well. Lars Bismark You will have to speak louder, since your post was stupid. As for the neg ratings, I was planning to reverse those later in the day (about 40 minutes ago, as a matter of fact) and the only person I remember neg ratings is travis. As a side note, I crashed just like everyone else did, and had nothing to do with the simulator crash. I agree with the above post

Not full, the problem is the club perverts who dont have a sense of humor. Willow above has a great sense of humor as do many others. Either way, as of right now I do not want to go through with Tartarus (Agian, dont hold me to this, this is how I feel as of right now).

Ryen, you've been a good contributor to SL, and in that way earned a rep as longtime SLer. Don't let your affiliation to Something Awful screw that up.

After considering some things, travis I am sorry I neg rated you. I am sorry for nothing else, however. I will be retracting the neg upon my return, but pretty much everything else still stands. Tartarus is really the only thing still allowing me to keep faith in second life, besides that I have been bored out of my mind with SL as of late.

I wasn't involved in this situation, but I have been party to a couple of other ones that are group has engaged in. And what I really enjoyed about it is was that we didn't do anything to violate other people's space or privacy. Instead it was a more subtle interaction, where the humor wasn't in causing people grief, it was seeing people's reaction to seeing something out of the ordinary, like a bunch of boxes walking around. Our group really isn't interested in causing harm to others. It's not that creative or amusing. We like engaging in more subtle interactions.
I honestly think what's happening is that people are perceiving what we're doing based on their expectations of what they THINK we're going to do. They expect us to attack other people and cause harm, and so anything we do that might possibly be construed as that will be interpreted as that, even if that's not our intention. However I wouldn't be involved in this group if that was our intention. I don't like griefers. I don't like people who violate other people's privacy. But I do enjoy social experiments and seeing people's reaction. And really, SL is one massive social experiment. But we don't have the intention of causing harm to others. If that is happening, either accidently or through a couple of bad apples in our group, I apologize. But know that griefing other people and being rude goes against our own philosophy. Because quite honestly, by doing that you force people into certain types of reactions. And the humor we find is in the unpredictable nature of how people will respond to our antics. Griefing other people takes away that unpredictability, and the humor

I was in the club at the time. In fact, I was one of the mimes. Before we flew in to the club, it was made very clear to everyone that there were absolutely no ill felling towards anyone at the gathering- you were the audience, and we we going to teleport in, walk around a bit, and leave. The leaders of the group emphasized that anyone with pushguns or malicious scripts would be kicked out of the group and most likely our HQ. I even recommended that the mimes avoid touching the dancers, unless someone decided that we were starting a fight. It sucks that the real greifers have left such an impression that people who are out to do subtle, quirky jokes can't leave their land without being met with suspicion or outright hostility. I thought it was great that the person who had an avatar with a walker picked up on what we were doing and played a role along with us, although its obvious that people took it the wrong way. There was no way we could have hit her or anyone else with the signs, they were made out of two simple prims peiced together in the time between someone proposing the prank around noon and gathering enough people for it to be interesting.
Could a kind Linden take the time to go through server logs one more time and find out both who started rating people negatively and why the server crashed? Both of these actions were taken without the consent of the group and I think we would all agree were pretty lame, though I doubt any of us had the resources to bring down the sim like that.

Whether that is Ryen or not, even if it is, it seems somewhat unfair to hold him accountable to something that he said both in the heat of the moment and in a private forum. Have you ever been with your friends and someone did something that bothered you, and in your anger you told your friends you wanted to get back at that person in some way? Later on though you cool down, partly because you've been able to vent your frustration to another party. And it's understood that what was said was just driven by the emotion at the time, but that you didn't really intend to go through with it. How would you like it then if someone took what you said and posted it for others to hear? We all stay stupid shit when we're both angry and among others who would be receptive to our anger. Is it really wise to hold what's said during those times as a true indication into the character of the individual? Think back to the things that you say when you're in your own private relationships and have just been provoked to anger. Were they really reflective of how you are as a person? Or was it a brief moment of irrationality that later goes away as you're able to vent your frustrations to others? If you can honestly say you've never said anything in anger that you later regreted since it wasn't really in your character, you're a better person than I am.
